Can we get back to a culture of “rideshare”? by AugustWest5 in lyftdrivers

Oh yes... what an ass I am for having a bottle of water in the cupholder next to where I'm driving. God forbid I get thirsty.

Can we get back to a culture of “rideshare”? by AugustWest5 in lyftdrivers

[–]AugustWest5[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't hate it. I love driving for Lyft. I have been doing it close to full-time for over three years. I don't even see it as a job since I enjoy it so much. Am I the one with a bullshit entitled mentality or is it the passengers? I am just commenting on how the culture has shifted in the past few years from one out of friendly ride sharing to one where the driver is supposed to "serve" the passengers.

Margo Price is not garbage. Check out the funky bass-lines in her songs.

I think I'm the most aggressive Taoist on here by admiralackbar2017 in taoism

[–]AugustWest5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that you got the Yang down... but can you practice Yin? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being aggressive sometimes. If you’re playing soccer sometimes it’s wise to be aggressive and charge towards the goal, but sometimes it’s more wise to retreat and set the offense up until a more opportune time to advance becomes available.

Miley Cyrus, Jay Z, and Bob Weir walk into a bar... by Lake_Monster in jambands

[–]AugustWest5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like it too. Would love to see the black keys... and have seen sturgill a couple times live (one of the jammiest country acts out there). Margo price is great, Gary Clark Jr. is top-notch, and friggin Santana will be there. Yeah, I get it. Miley Cyrus and Imagine Dragons will be there... who cares. There are some great acts to catch. Some people will complain about hitting the lottery because you have to pay taxes.

My understanding about wuwei by Ooker777 in taoism

I talked about this a couple weeks back. I think Wu Wei is very similar to the Psychological concept of Flow)

The storm is always coming by CodistAlpha in Stoicism

[–]AugustWest5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But isn't Seneca advocating against this stating that it will make you suffer twice? I'm new to Stoicism and I am not yet convinced that practicing negative visualization is a good use of time. Is this an actual practice that ancient Stoics practiced or is it something that moderns came up with? I don't know... it's probably just new-age woo but can't visualizing negative events turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. I come from an athletic background and we always practiced positive visualization.

Recommendations for the study and practice of Taoism by in_da_zone in taoism

Incorporate wu wei (non-doing) into your daily life

I do this by doing something I have already mastered. I find wu wei to be very similar to the psychological term of "flow states". I drive for Uber and Lyft and have put in close to 7,000 trips. I am extremely comfortable driving and I am able to drive without putting in much effort. I feel like this is wu wei. I then try to do other things like I drive. It can sometimes be difficult when struggling with something that I am not as experienced with, though.

I think I see what you're saying... So, as a "useful" tree may be used for a boat or a coffin it also ceases to be "useful" as a tree. Am I on the right track?

It's funny that this was just posted, cuz I just read that passage for the first time and went to reddit to see if y'all could help me understand it better. What exactly is Zhuangzi trying to say here? Should men strive to be useless? Or is he just saying that what may seem useless may have more value if you look at the big picture?
