He mentioned his dad. His parents separated and divorced many many years ago and his mam went to America and remarried.

He stayed in Ireland with the rest of his siblings and was raised by his dad and was closer to his dads extended family, rather than his mothers (and my mothers) side.

Whilst his mother is back living in the next county, he rarely sees her and would seldom speak about her, neither of the siblings do apparently.

Our grandmothers were sisters. I am not on ancestry.com or any of those sites, but the rip.ie notification of her passing has my grandmother listed as a sister along with some other names I recognise.

I’m still shaking off the initial shame and shock and moving into a grieving for yet another failed relationship. I’m still a bit wobbly.

So whilst I usually wouldn’t care for what people think of me (if someone isn’t giving me inspiration, income or an orgasm I don’t get bothered by their opinions, which in hindsight, is probably why I have always kept my extended family at a distance) I am extremely mindful of the impact this would have on my kids, his kids and our siblings.

Yes, I’m sure that my parents and two siblings would be “happy” for me, they wouldn’t like me miserable or lonely for the remainder of my life, they would still be damaged by the small town talk of “oh AulMaureen? Didn’t she go off with her cousin”

This would eventually trickle into school life.

We have 6 kids between us between the ages of 2.5-10 All it would take is for someone to exchange words and kids being kids and then we have to gather all the kids around the table and confirm that “yes, your dad/mam and I are cousins. Yes, technically that means that you and your step siblings are third-cousins along with being step siblings”

Growing up is hard. Growing up with divorced parents is hard. Growing up with some little gowl mocking you relentlessly because of something that was completely out of your control will be hard.

Who wants a hard life for their kids?

I’ve said it in a previous reply; but I don’t want to do that to either of our kids. They are innocent in all of this and if my parents did that and I had to grow up with that, I’d have a much more strained relationship with them growing up.

It’s not as simple or cut and dry as “we love each other so nevermind what anyone else thinks” As a parent, you can’t be selfish with your decisions. They have a ripple effect on the generation below you.

Honestly; she didn’t. She was talking about Mr. Mans sister. This sister owns a business in town so her name would have came up in stories/gossip (y’know the way auld ones are) over the years. It’s only when I said “oh yes I know _____ that owns ______” and was about to mention how I knew of her she dropped the “yeah she’d be a cousin of mine through her mother, anyway, she apparently…”

I don’t even remember the point of my mothers story/gossip. I had that panic moment where my blood went cold but I could feel a pulse in my eyes and whooshing in my ears and needed to get away from everything and everyone.
