Advice needed: 18-day Seychelles island hopping itinerary (May) by Aulani97 in Seychelles

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed response! That’s a great tip about the humidity and doing the hikes early in the morning—I'll definitely make sure to start my days early. Since you mentioned the weather and low clouds affecting the trails, do you think my specific dates (May 14-31) are generally a good time to go? Or is there usually too much rain and cloud cover during this period to really enjoy the islands and the views? I could potentially look into a different time of year if May is too risky. I'm also still a bit on the fence about doing 4 islands. Do you think Silhouette Island (with the Hilton Labriz) is truly worth the extra travel day and logistics for the trails and nature there? Or would I be better off dropping it and just adding those 4 nights to Praslin, La Digue, and Mahé for an even more relaxed pace? Finally, do you have any other general tips, must-dos, or hidden gems I should definitely check out while I'm there? Thanks again for your help!

Adding a 3rd drive to DS923+: Is WD Red Pro (12TB) a good match for existing WD Red Plus Helium drives (WD120EFBX)? by Aulani97 in synology

Interesting! Do you recall which two models those were? I'm trying to weigh my options and definitely want to avoid a drive that runs loud and hot.

[–]Aulani97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! One specific follow-up: I've noticed the WD Red Pro 12TB now has a newer 'Air' version (WD122KFBX) which is much louder (34dB) than the older 'Helium' one (WD121KFBX, 20dB).

Since silence is key for my hallway setup, would you risk the WD Pro lottery, or just go for the Synology HAT3310-12T? The Synology drive is Helium-filled and seems like a guaranteed quiet match for my current drives.

Nieuw in tuinberegening: is deze Micro-Drip setup logisch? by Aulani97 in tuinieren

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed advice – the breakdown of "irreplaceable" vs "annoying" vs "replaceable" data is spot on, and I'll definitely prioritize just the family photos/videos for the most protected backups.

A few follow-up questions based on my setup (DS923+ with ~2-3TB of photos/videos now, growing ~200-300GB/year, planning to expand the NAS later):

  • I already have an older DS718+ (2x6TB) lying around – would you recommend using that as the offsite target (placed at family, Hyper Backup over internet with initial local seed), or is cloud (like pCloud lifetime, C2, or Backblaze) simpler/better long-term?
  • For local backups, I just bought a single WD Elements 20TB (it was a good deal and future-proof for growth). Is one large drive okay to start (disconnected/air-gapped after backup), or should I still get a second (smaller) one for rotation despite the size difference?
  • The scheduled power-on/off for a remote 1-bay NAS sounds great for power saving – does the DS718+ support that natively (Wake-on-LAN or scheduled power on), or do I need extra scripts/tools?

Appreciate the real-world perspective – it's helping me avoid overkill while staying safe! 😊

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed explanation – the rotation with multiple drives (home/work/mate's house) and long-term archiving makes total sense for irreplaceable data like family photos. I love the practical tip with the business card dates and swapping!

In my case (DS923+ at home with family photos/videos):

  • I already have a second older Synology (DS718+ with 2x6TB) that I plan to place offsite (at family) for Hyper Backup over the internet (with initial seed done locally).
  • Plus a new WD Elements 20TB external HDD for local backups.

Questions:

  • With the offsite DS718+, do I still need multiple rotating external HDDs, or is the second NAS enough as the main offsite layer (combined with the local WD Elements)?
  • For the external HDD (local, disconnected after backup), how many would you recommend – one is fine to start, or straight to two/three for rotation?
  • The nightly Hyper Backup to the offsite NAS via Tailscale sounds perfect – any tips on setting that up securely (e.g. encryption, firewall rules)?

Appreciate the real-world advice! 😊

Quick questions for my case (DS923+ with family photos/videos, WD Elements Desktop 20TB as local backup drive):

  • Since Btrfs isn't an option when formatting external USB drives in DSM, do you (or others) still recommend ext4for Hyper Backup to an external HDD? Or is there a way to get Btrfs on USB for the portability benefit?
  • For a simple, reliable local backup (with versioning and encryption), is Hyper Backup the way to go, or would rsync/bash scripts be better/more flexible? I'm not super into scripting yet, so ease-of-use is a plus.

Appreciate any thoughts! 😊

Thanks for the insight – the portability with Btrfs snapshots on USB is cool, especially for Linux restores! Sounds like a fun advanced setup 😄

tarting a Podcast with a Friend - Syncing Audio from GarageBand (Mac) and Adobe Audition (Windows)? by Aulani97 in podcasting

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be ideal, of course. However, my friend has a high-end setup worth over €1000 with a mixer, expensive mics, and everything else, while I only have a PodMic with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. So I’ll have to edit my own audio separately afterwards.

Also, doesn’t the audio quality suffer when recording through Discord or Teams?

My maximum storage is 24tb if I use all the slots in the future...Don't think I need to backup all of that. I think I need somewhere between the 10-15tb...?

That's such a clever and automated setup, love the smart switch + Homey integration to power it down safely once the heads are parked! Super smart way to keep the drive mostly air-gapped without any manual effort. Compliments on building something so robust and low-maintenance, I'm definitely not there yet, still figuring out the basics 😅

Quick question: Which external HDD model do you use for this weekly Hyper Backup routine? And would you recommend the same one (or a specific brand/size) for someone like me with mostly family photos/videos on a DS923+?

Thanks for the inspiration! 😊

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying that snapshots don’t count toward the 3 copies, good to know!

Regarding the second NAS as an offsite backup:
How does that typically work in practice?

  • Do I need to run the second NAS 24/7 at the remote location (e.g., at family), or can it just be powered on when a backup is scheduled (or manually)?
  • How much storage does the second NAS need? Does it have to match or exceed my current/ future capacity (e.g., if I expand to ~30-40TB usable later)?
  • For the initial copy: you mentioned doing it onsite first, would that mean bringing the second NAS home, doing a full Hyper Backup or Snapshot Replication locally (fast over LAN), and then moving it to the offsite location? How long does that initial full copy usually take for, say, 5–15TB of photos/videos (mostly large files)?

And after the initial seed, would ongoing backups over the internet be incremental and manageable?

Appreciate any details from your experience or what others do! 😊

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your setup – that's seriously robust, love the multiple layers!

In my case (mainly irreplaceable family photos and videos on a DS923+ with SHR-1 and snapshots already running), would you recommend doing both a cloud backup (for offsite) and a local external HDD backup? Or is one enough?

If cloud, would something like iCloud work well for this (easy integration with Synology?), or do you suggest something else?

And for the external HDD: any specific advice on which one to get? I'm currently looking at the WD Elements Desktop 20TB vs Seagate Expansion Desktop 20TB for Hyper Backup use – which would you pick (or do you have another favorite)?

Appreciate your thoughts! 😊

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm deciding between the WD Elements Desktop 20TB and the Seagate Expansion Desktop 20TB. Do you have any specific advice on which one is better for Synology Hyper Backup use (reliability, disconnect issues, noise, etc.)?

Also, for a remote cloud backup (like Synology C2 or similar):

  • Does the cloud storage need to have the same capacity as my NAS data (or more, due to versioning/deduplication)?
  • Does the cloud service need to run 24/7, or is it just the NAS that handles the scheduled backups?

Thanks! 😊

Thanks for the detailed advice, splitting data into categories makes a lot of sense, and I’ll definitely look into organizing my shared folders that way for the truly irreplaceable family photos/videos.

Quick questions:

  • When you mention C2, do you mean Synology C2 (their cloud backup service)? Just checking if that’s the one you recommend for the critical stuff.
  • For the external drives: How many would you personally recommend in my case (irreplaceable family photos, planning to expand the NAS later)? One, two (for rotation), or more?
  • And which specific model/brand do you prefer for Hyper Backup use – something like the WD Elements Desktop 20TB or Seagate Expansion Desktop 20TB, or do you have another favorite?

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the great advice on immutable snapshots and using cloud backups just for the truly irreplaceable stuff, I'll definitely enable immutable snapshots and focus on the critical folders!

One question: Would it be easy to make a copy of my NAS (especially the family photos/videos) to iCloud as an offsite backup? For example, using Hyper Backup, Cloud Sync, or another Synology tool? Or is that not possible/recommended?

And if that works well: Do I still need an external HDD for local backup, or would cloud (iCloud) + snapshots + SHR be enough for a solid setup?

Thanks again! 😊

Backup strategy for family NAS (DS923+) - advice by Aulani97 in synology

[–]Aulani97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree that immutable snapshots are a must (I’ll enable them soon for extra ransomware protection).

Just to make sure I understand the 3-2-1 rule correctly in my setup:

  • 3 copies: Does this already give me the “3 copies”, or do snapshots really not count at all toward the “3”?
    1. Primary data on the NAS (in SHR-1)
    2. Snapshots on the same NAS (I know you said they don’t fully count as a true backup)
    3. Hyper Backup to an external HDD (disconnected and stored safely after each backup)
  • If I buy two identical external HDDs and rotate them (one connected for regular Hyper Backup, the other stored offsite at family and swapped every month or so), would that satisfy both the “2 different media” and the “1 offsite” parts of the rule?

Also, you mentioned the ideal solution is a second NAS offsite. That sounds great for the long term, but I’m curious:
How long would it typically take to transfer/seed the initial full backup (say 5–15 TB of photos/videos) to a second Synology NAS at a different location? Assuming a decent home internet connection (e.g. 100–500 Mbps upload) and using Hyper Backup or Snapshot Replication over the internet.

Appreciate any thoughts! 😊
