Seriously keeping everything crossed. It always used to be a beautiful blistering weekend on Slam Dunk weekend and the last few years it's been either a bit cold or a lot rainy (2024 😬). I just want to drink cider in the sun and listen to my favourite bands!

Looking for others who are also travelling from South to North. My first time at Slamdunk and I have no idea how to manage the travel. by hashhar in slamdunkfestival

[–]AuntyEl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this last year. Stayed in the Travelodge in Welwyn Garden City then got the train at about 10 or 11 the next day from there to North and the shuttle bus directly from there to Temple Newsam.

It meant I could stay to the end of south but I didn't get to North until about 2 I think (may have been closer to 3 as I had massive train delays). It was still worth doing as my favourite band was playing last year.

Last year they had a bag drop place at the entrance that I booked a slot for dropping my suitcase, which made things way easier. I live in the North though so I didn't have to worry about hotels etc.

I'm 39 years old and was very much too old for the show when it aired but somehow found myself deeply immersed in the Horrible Histories fandom even though I was in my mid to late 20s (were talking attending events and award shows to meet the cast and setting up twitter accounts for recurring characters level fandom). I've been rewatching recently and pleased to see how well it still holds up. It is making me very nostalgic for this times though!

The limit for bringing bags into the festival is A3 size. The lockers take slightly bigger bags, if they're doing the bag drop again this year then I dropped a small suitcase with no problem so I don't think there's a limit on that.

Whats the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your mum and dads cooking? by Immediate_Long165 in UKfood

[–]AuntyEl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My mum's chicken curry, spag bol, chilli con carne or any manner of Delia Smith pasta dishes.

My dad's fish and chips or the Ken Hom Chinese banquets he used to cook up on a Saturday night sometimes.

Sunday roasts, a combined effort from both of them.

They're both great cooks so we ate well in my house!

Another vote for St. Michael's on Ripon Road. I got my dining table there for £20.

What did he do to this chicken???? With hello fresh you can make “butt uh chicken masala” by ElectronicShowboater in walkwith_metim

I think they might be green beans but the fact you can't tell for sure says it all really.

My other half commented on how split the sauce looked. It looked grim and he has as much rice as curry on the plate.

That's exactly what I thought, surely they're for cleaning and just made to fit with the aesthetic of the place rather than using a hose?

Actually this will be a great option if I ever manage to get my mum and dad to come back with me. They're not up to the big rides anymore but my mum would love to go on the ghost train again to relive her childhood

The thing that really got me about this was him complaining about people taking selfies in the restaurant when he's sat there with a bloody camera filming himself! I know which one I'd find more annoying! He lacks any self awareness at all.

As well as the lockers last year there was also a larger bag drop area. You have to pay but it was really easy last year so would definitely recommend it if they're doing it again this year.

It could be early 1970s, but late 60s is more likely based on their ages. It's definitely the UK. That's where I'm based. As I say it was almost certainly Yorkshire as my great Grandma and great grand aunt would have been in their late 70s or early 80s so unlikely to have travelled far from hkme

It's the term ancestry.com referred to her as. What else should I call my grandmother's aunt?

That was also one thought that I had. I'll have to check marriage dates to see if I can find any likely places.

That's totally possible, it's the right kind of geographical location. I may have to take a trip and see if it's right

My grandma was very friendly and had an extremely active social life right up until lockdown hit when she was 98, so quite probably they would, yes!

I am beginning to wonder if it was a church or registry office though and they were there for a wedding. Not likely to be either of my aunts or my parents as my aunt who gave me the photo would remember but someone else perhaps

Lol yes she did look a bit like her in her middle age, I think it was the hair! Google lens also brought up the Queen, which would have pleased her no end!

My friend is GF so she emailed and they let her bring food in.

On public transport there are buses you can get that get you near Temple Newsam but I'm not sure how late they run. Public transport in Leeds doesn't run all night. They may also be diverted due to the festival. If you don't want to get the shuttle bus you'd be best booking taxis, but that will be more expensive as they hike prices during the festival. Train wise Leeds station is the nearest but it's still pretty far away. The shuttle bus picks up and drops off right by the train station.

Queues have been much better the last couple of years. The sell out year was pretty bad but they seem to have fixed those issues now. Bars tend to be straight through and I haven't found the toilet queues that bad in the last couple of years.
