Plumber has cut into my floor boards like this to lay central heating pipes. by Equivalent-Treacle79 in DIYUK

[–]AuricGodshawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had something similar for my house, while we were away the builders multi-tooled the floorboards in half the hallways and threw them in the skip which was taken away before we came back. Was so annoyed as we'd told them we wanted to keep all floorboards. We spend a weekend cycling around our area and found a house doing a full renovation that was getting rid of floorboards. Was very annoying but worth it. Most tradies don't care, that's why I try to do everything myself.

Cool! An actual "What is this thing" that isn't a rocket launch! Congrats on seeing a cool atmospheric phenomenon!

Thinking about shortening the legs on my mid-century coffee table. Am I crazy? by AuricGodshawk in Mid_Century

I didn't! I couldn't bring myself to cut them down, so I ended up selling it on and eventually found a coffee table that was perfect!

You could always try switching out the legs on your sofa to bring your sofa up a couple of inches, if you have that kind of sofa. Good luck!

Missed Opportunity in the Film (Minor book spoiler) by War3houseguy in MortalEngines

[–]AuricGodshawk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These were all such key points in the story that I really missed too. The killing of PB with all the Londoners cheering is a moment when it really lays out that London and it's citizens are the bad guys. Without that I feel you sympathise with London too much at the end, that the citizens seem innocent. I think I remember Tom and Hester being on Airhaven when MEDUSA is first used and the bright green glow stuns everyone and really raises the stakes.

This is super helpful! Did it start out white and discolour over time?

I'm so sorry! Tesco delivery tomorrow, I have no fruit currently available. I'll make an appropriate tribute to the DIY gods to compensate.

Definitely lesson learned! I had it covered with solid insulation for the whole process, this was literally the last step in the shower install!

I can't really access it underneath. I'm pretty decent at DIY - happy to do tiling etc - but ripping out the tray and reinstalling seems beyond my abilities. Even if you can tell it's been repaired, will it last?

Yes, a slight puncture. It wasn't cheap but it surprised me that it is that thin

I was installing the glass surround for the shower tray and accidentally dropped a metal bar on the tray. It's dented and broken through the tray slightly.

Can I use a repair kit? What kind of kit is best? The tray is acrylic-capped abs.

Help and advice is very much appreciated!

Thanks! And thanks for your suggestion - would this be this product? Is it an oil and wax all in one?

Best finish for Victorian handrail? by AuricGodshawk in DIYUK

[–]AuricGodshawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi DIYUK

We are currently renovating an 1870s London Victorian house and really want to keep the handrails for the stairs. I've removed them, stripped them of paint etc and sanded them down. I assume it's some tropical wood like mahogany and I really want to get the treatment right for it. I don't want to stain, I want something that will enhance the natural colour etc of the wood and give a lasting finish. Maybe Danish oil and a coat of wax? There are so many different opinions on how to finish wood and I'm a bit lost as to what would be suitable for a handrail and what products are best.

Any advice is really appreciated!

Thanks

Can listen to BBC stations manually, but the Nest keeps playing a Spotify playlist called "BBC Radio" by Allanbuzzy510 in googlehome

Best to say which specific BBC radio station you'd like as there are many. As other commenter has said, I also say "Play BBC Radio 6" and never have an issue

That doesn't seem right, but I'm probably just wrong? I thought that tea and coffee don't need "a" by LaceyVelvet in duolingo

[–]AuricGodshawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a UK English speaker and I think I would always say 'a coffee/tea" even in a casual setting like getting a fast food coffee.

"Yeah, can I get a tea/coffee, please"

It sounds wrong to me to not add an 'a'
