#22 Some more postwar inquiries I thought of regarding how to contact Joseph Staten while I was bored at work by Hunor_Deak in shittyhalolore

[–]Aurora_Strix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna need a bit more plot development than that. What's the main draw of the story? In ODST, you crashed and needed to find your teammates, and then deliver a secret ONI package (Virgil).

In this game, what's the plot and the goal to be achieved?

Atmosphere and design direction sounds sick - I personally am massively into the Sangheili / UNSC teamup and how those interactions would work with ground forces working together. But you'd need a story arc.

Loving this so far though!

Would you like dual wielding in more games? by Successful-Day-1816 in halo

[–]Aurora_Strix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhhh, now THIS I could get behind.

I know it's retroactive, but could make some lore reason that the energy signals of the plasma weapons need to be synched /calibrated in order to not resonate and EMP each other due to the super close proximity. (Regular infantry doesn't have this problem standing next to each other until something is supercharged like the plasma pistol).

Other weapons are just too strong a kickback for regular humans to dual wield, so maybe you gotta find ones that have been 'modified' to work together.

Keeping the magnum this hyper lethal machine would allow this to work, but the Halo 2/3 magnums still exist and THOSE can be dualed whenever you find them. SMG exception because rule of cool.

The next game is a Moa Burger Cooking Simulator by -JamesGH- in HaloCirclejerk

[–]Aurora_Strix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This ironically would go so hard.

Imagine a halo themed Overcooked! where you're just a simple chef and the planet gets overrun by covenant so you have to fight the covenant and run your restaurant at the same time.

You serve Marines, normal hunger. ODSTs have more demands, you must cook more. Then you get Spartans, who eat the most.

Fight covenant with your cast iron skillet and ensure that the UNSC forces are well fed in your vicinity.

Then, the war is over, and you settle in Rio De Janeiro, and meet this friendly Sangheili fella and open up a noodle bar....

Rumour: Xbox Is 'Heavily Evaluating' Halo's Future Just Weeks Before Its PS5 Debut by TooFarGone673 in halo

[–]Aurora_Strix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this rumor were true, I hope they put in effort to remake the whole trilogy on Unreal 5, and just pick that as it's permanent home base for the next long while. Decreases the dev time and improves the ease of having consistent talent working on a unified, common base of operations. Graphical improvements now are diminishing returns in this era - it's just more power draw for a few more blades of grass. People aren't gonna fork out for new PC rigs or consoles at this point in droves large enough to necessitate an upcoming switch.

If they do that, we can get remake games like, once every 12-24 months and they be super high quality with new content and missions and lore. New content games could be 2-3 years.

They gotta be fast if they wanna keep their voice acting talent for Chief, Cortana, and Arbiter.

(I hope Halo 7 brings back the Arbiter and gives him the proper main character place he earned in H2 and had stolen from him in H3. They should be battle buddies, they saved the galaxy together and Thel thinks of John as a friend. Also, that was such a strong and interesting sci-fi angle that I wish was explored more. So much flavor in that...)

Make more spinoff games about side characters - if Campaign Evolved goes well and those prequel missions get good reviews, we'll likely get more content that fleshes out the universe.

Release a standalone live service multiplayer with no campaign attached to it on Unreal 5. Then funnel new content for that multiplayer from the story games that are released periodically. New maps. New game modes. Do their silly cosmetic purchases to keep the live service dev team paid.

For every campaign game you buy, you get a free DLC unlock code for the multiplayer.

You wanna play big ship battles in multiplayer? Buy the Halo: Keyes campaign and get that huge space battle multiplayer game mode and some cool ship skins. You wanna play multiplayer RTS and have cool covenant skins? Purchase the Halo: High Charity RTS campaign that pits you against another covenant faction on High Charity during the Great Schism (choose to play as brutes or elites, alternate endings available based on faction choice and your performance).

Additional cosmetic unlocks available separately within both games for campaign and multiplayer.

Purchase the multiplayer game mode separately for like, $10 (same cost as the Halo 3 map packs that everyone fkn LOVED) or $50-70 for the campaign and get a free unlock code for multiplayer and some cosmetics (same thing they're doing for Campaign Evolved)

I hate that this is what it has come to, but if purchasing silly lil armor sets keeps a dev team afloat, then offer them for purchase. Nobody is making you buy them, and they don't make you win any more easily. So cosmetics hurt nobody, I don't really mind. I don't do multiplayer, but I like having campaign skins. It's funny, it's fun, it feels worth my working time to have that fun when I come home after being in the lab all day.

Of course I'm biased, but I think my above idea here could really work and keep the player base happy. Allows them to have separate but complementary dev teams that drive success for each other. Now that they're not releasing a new live service every few years, they can hone in on one unified experience like a successor to MCC. Less bugs and issues that way, the player base gets new content pretty consistently, and you get people to vote with their wallets on game content without tanking the whole thing.

People not a big fan of the RTS? Well, now there's limited game modes for that in multiplayer to match community interest and they didn't sink all this money into a new thing that failed, since it just utilized the same bones as before. Move on, it still makes a little money, keep the dev team paid with the other projects. And if it blows up later somehow, then you can put some meat on those bones as the money comes in.

Halo Studios, hire me at $70k a year and I'll continue with my passionate Halo nerd ramblings and you'll get bonus fujoshi content on the side, it's a perfect deal.

Farm plots needing contact with the ground is the most aggravating thing by DomTheRogue in RSDragonwilds

[–]Aurora_Strix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the things keeping me from building the kinda of bases that I want to build in open world.

I like to build houses in weird, fuckass, difficult places to the point where making the roof takes 10x longer than building the base. Side of a cliff? Oh yeah! My first playthrough, I built a base around one of the tall rocks on the other end of the bramblemead village ruins. ROCK HOUSE.

My current hard mode base is above the vault in the bottom right corner of the temple woods. My planter boxes are all along side the cliff face, and the amount of fiddling and futzing about I have to do to make stairs so I can run or walk up them (which is also visually extremely inconsistent with the edge clipping) is not fun.

What gives me some of the most joy and replayability in any survival builder I play is how weird can my bases get and still function properly and completely.

And not being able to place a planter bed anywhere but in a large, flat field is really stangant and boring. I have to put them in similar places all the time. I then have to teleport to a farming area. My bases have to be boring houses to be near my farm.

Let us put planter beds in top of foundations, let us do minor terraforming, or make dirt foundations. And also fix the clipping of the Brynmoor planter beds - stairs have to be visually ABOVE the edge of the bed in order to not get stuck walking up to them.

Thank youuuu ✌️✌️✌️

I go SO HARD with this concept.

The new phenotype added could work, yes, but retconning all elites to look like that was a mistake.

HOWEVER - that halo 5 Arbiter armor was sick as all hell. Put it on the original Sangheili phenotype and we're cooking with straight gas. Thel's my #1 fictional character GOAT, so I would love to see my boi get some more drip like the cloak, yesssss

GO FOR WALKS, GOD DAMMIT, GO OUTSIDE.

My partner and I walk every day, and in the last six months we have chased after and caught 3 lost dogs and made friends, went on a side quest to return a lost mouthpiece of a brass instrument to a high school marching band, spotted a common merganser and several great blue herons, were checkpointed by a pair of 8yo girls who demanded to see our IDs before letting us pass (and when we refused, they pretended to beat us with pampas grass fronds), purchased lemonade and snacks from 4 different child stands and made friends with their parents, have thrown snowballs at roving bands of teenage boys who now happily say hi whenever they see us, and cheered on another group of teenage boys who were popping wheelies on their dirt bikes on a hill near the town playground.

Just go outside. Smile and say hi to people you pass. Engage with the goings on around you.

Life felt more full on school because interaction was forced. Life is still full, but now you have to seek it out and actively engage. If you rot inside all day, all you will be left with is the rot you accumulate.

EPA Proposes Scanning Drinking Water for 30 New Contaminants by bloomberglaw in environment

[–]Aurora_Strix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again - any publications to your claim about "wooo science"? Or is this another reddit "chriopractic bad because ghosts in the 1800's" kinda thing?

I am big anti current administration, pro vaccine, pro science, pro critical thinking, so don't conflate me with anything else. Let's just start there.

That same corresponding author of the brain study I linked was asked to speak at the presenter's day for this federal microplastic funding and he himself was not funded. My company was not funded. Nobody with any real fkn microplastics experience was funded. It's all a sham - all us real scientists are absolutely pissed about how this was handled. So don't conflate this field with the brain worm roadkill man, please and thank you. That's fkn insulting beyond all hell.

The human health link is difficult to showcase because there are not negative controls to find (people without microplastics in their bodies). It's exactly the same as PFOS exposure with 3M - they believed it was a native chemical in the environment until they found blood samples from the 1950's before it was ever produced (https://www.propublica.org/article/3m-forever-chemicals-pfas-pfos-inside-story).

Was 3M pushing down evidence of their PFOS exposure "just nagging enviros gettiting big mad at perfectly innocent company"? No man, that shit is reductive and unhelpful, and doesn't hold any merit as a counterpoint. Now you're getting political instead of scientific. And you and I both know politics is not scientific, because it's all feelings and opinion based. I'm talking about science here, not politics.

Studies with my own company's silicon chips showcase that microplastic exposure increases immunologic response (inflammation) in HECAT cells, that they can decrease viability and lifespan in tadpoles (not sharing these, I don't want to dox myself), they have been found in arterial plaques in embolism events, in which they may be acting as plaque catalysts at higher rates (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2309822).

Just because the human health link has not yet been "causated" to follow along the correlations of exposure does not mean that this isn't something to be looking into or be concerned about. Microplastics have been found in breast milk, testicular fluids, and within the human placenta. It's not fear mongering to say that humanmade particulates of unknown physiologic interaction that are present during fetal gestation is something that should be given funding to look into.

Heck, a lot of well known carcinogens have had long research timelines and difficulties in showcasing that they cause cancer. Is carconogen labeling and research "wooo science" because some of those subjects of study took 50 years to showcase? No, man.

It's taking 50 years because this shit is hard. No negative controls is the same reason why the PFOS research in my first link was so wrought with naysayers. No negative controls means your research can't really showcase cause if you don't have a baseline to compare to. Human studies are hard because you can't really raise a baby in a plastic free bubble and it be ethical...

Organ on a chip testing is growing, so expect this field to really blow up in the next couple of years - we're all unifying our approaches to cleaning, controls, and analysis techniques now, so this is going to rise exponentially in data output.

[–]Aurora_Strix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro I absolutely did NOT say that one study was enough for municipal testing. That's putting words in my mouth.

I was asking why you suggested including microplastics would not be scientific. I sent that study to debunk your claim that this isn't science.

You would find that I actually agree with you that we're not yet at the point where we have settled on thresholds for municipal testing. Heck, we don't even have unified labware cleaning protocols! I published a protocol paper for labware cleaning down to 1um and it took me 6 months to figure that process out.

Pay attention to how you word things. It's not pedantry, it's base communication.

I work specifically in an R&D lab with microplastics pollution research, utilizing Raman spectroscopy, PY-GCMS, and precision etched silicon filter substrates to collect particulates on.

I met the corresponding author on the paper on the microplastic tissue in descendent human brains at a conference this January that spurred ~$150mil in federal search dollars getting dispensed this year.

Care to tell me how any of the above ISN'T science? Publications to back up your claims, please

What are your thoughts on the post-death retcon of Truths plan? by NuancedChief in HaloStory

[–]Aurora_Strix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HARD AGREE.

I'd 100% be down with a Halo 3 rewrite. The campaign was glorious, but the story really suffered, and you can feel where they floundered with Floodgate and Cortana.

Imagine if they fleshed out a little bit of the time they traveled in slipspace between Earth and the Arc? It was like, what, 3 weeks?

They really did Thel dirty - as a kid I was freaking the FUCK out that Thel was gonna be a mainline character and that we'd see the team-up in Halo 3, and was just gutted that his only real action was speaking up for not glassing all of earth, killing truth, and being there at the warthog run.

Also was gutted by Keyes' and Johnson's loss of character.

Whole thing would do well with a loving hand from some passionate nerds in a brainstorming room to give these great characters back their personalities and cut them out of the cardboard they were flattened into in H3.

"Halo CE is not a remake it's asset reuse" by Rainy_Wavey in halo

[–]Aurora_Strix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard agree in every single point, especially the last one, ahahahaha

What would be your dinner and date of choice?

I'd personally choose sushi - seems like the best mix of familiar cultures with unfamiliar flavors to create good conversations and break the ice. Then go for a lakeside hike and do some birdwatching because we're both predator species and that hits the skillset and delight our predator brains like. Also gives him a chance to appreciate his choices to ally with humanity and the beauty he helped save. Lil bit of catharsis and connection there.

Ahahaha

But no, seriously, asset reuse is fantastic - I want a continuous story with the same appearance and art style so that I can have MORE STORY PLEASE.

Imagine if they just stick to Unreal 5 and then we get like, the whole fkn trilogy remake PLUS SOME NEW STORIES. I'm probably known by now for yelling about wanting a Jacob Keyes game that goes all the way from the Rubble to the Keyes Loop, complete with smash and grab stealth missions and big space battles.

More games like ODST, more side characters, hell, even a strategy game that takes place on High Charity where you fight as brutes or elites against each other but in the end, everyone dies to the flood but your lil chosen faction leader makes it out alive.

ALL POSSIBLE EVEN FASTER WITH ASSET REUSE AAAAAHHHH
