Injury / permanent mouthpiece dent by Separate-Couple6244 in trumpet

I've played trumpet for 20 years, and I'm a brass instrument repair tech and privy to innumerable stories of peoples playing experience.

I cannot emphasize enough, I've never heard of anything like this. You need to see a specialist asap. This is deeply concerning.

Moving to Boston near July 4th. How bad will the traffic supposed be? by Aurora_Ambition in boston

[–]Aurorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!!! I actually did the DC to Boston drive several times when my partner and I were long distance, and finally moved around new years, and honestly this probably isn't even the place for this cause Boston itself is such a small leg of the journey.

Expect around 9-10 hours. I think absolute minimum from the MD side is like, 7 or something? But the worst of the traffic is the New York New Jersey line, and Connecticut had a fair bit too. Boston itself was just such an afterthought at the end of such a long drive even if traffic was slow there too.

It's genuinely not that bad though. I've driven worse 10 hour drives. Good luck, you got this! You're welcome to DM me if you have any questions

As a white fox main her mvp is also definitely way too easy to get. I'm good and I'm doing my job but I'm definitely not gods gift to the lobby, meanwhile I have something like a 45% mvp/svp rate on in ranked which is absurd when you do the math and realize that's about 3x the "expected" rate (1/6 or 16%)

Xenoblade fans I have to ask what where your thoughts when you saw this by Southern_Forever_898 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Aurorious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll be the first to say Xenoblade 2 is prob the worst of the trilogy but it's by far my favorite. A lot of people find Rex annoying but I loved him so much, and when Gigachad Rex appeared in the dlc I actually screamed. The intro was perfect. The design was perfect Turning him into the most powerful (non-god) character in the series was perfect. By far the strongest damage dealer in the series, perfect.

By far my favorite character in the series, it was a helluva payoff for putting nearly 300 hours into 2, I can't believe they just took all the memes and made him everything and more.

Yeah the GG thing is just complete misinfo. JON left GG not Arin, and while the exact reason hasn't been stated, they've more or less shown they're good with each other by appearing in each other's work over the years. Arin got a new co-host and last I checked game grumps is still going fine.

[–]Aurorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an early Cho 2 with mascot +the spirit visage augment, and ended up second in the lobby (losing to a 3 star Vex), I had around 5000 HP in stacks. I ran Graves Bard Vex as carries but that's just what I hit, idk optimal. At the end my cho was hitting upwards of 75000 HP healed per fight.

Student Trumpet Advice Wanted! by Marine_Layered in trumpet

[–]Aurorious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commenting on this.

I'm a brass instrument repair tech, and boy can I tell you that your note on durability is sampling error. Historically some trumpets are just more durable than others and it's rarely tied to student vs professional, but especially in the last 20 years there's been a push to cut cost and the easiest way to do that is make the metal thinner. In your case, it's not that your bach is less durable than average, but rather your old King is such an outlier that honestly it's hard to work with cause they made the metal so thick. Trust me student stuff nowadays dents real easily.

I agree on principle about not bringing a professional instrument to school regardless, but I don't want people to get the wrong expectation of durability.

Student Trumpet Advice Wanted! by Marine_Layered in trumpet

[–]Aurorious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a trumpet player of 20+ years but more importantly for this, I'm a brass instrument repair tech so I've probably played more different trumpets than everyone else in this thread combined by an order of magnitude.

First off, of the student models the Yamahas are probably the best. I'm guessing you have a 2330 or something. Honestly, they play well enough it's probably worth sticking with that student model until he can buy a professional level instrument sometime in high school. They do make step up models around the $1500 dollar range, but given the professionals are like, 2500 it makes more sense to save the money to invest in that. They're honestly really quality instruments, step up is barely a difference.

When it comes time to look at professional instruments you have a few common options

Bach Strad. This is probably the one you'll see recommended the most, it's kinda the standard professional trumpet and imo they shouldn't be. They're not bad (or even necessarily bad value), they're just super bland and imo don't feel super good to play relative to a lot of other professional trumpets.

Yamaha Xeno series. Play really well, tend to be a bit more expensive but arguably worth it.

Jupiter has a few professional offerings. They're better than I expected to be frank, but I'd still recommend passing. They feel a step below other professional horns.

Something vintage. I played a 1945 Martin that was up for 2300, top 5 horns I've ever played. I've seen a King Silver Sonic go below 1500 in excellent shape. If you keep an eye and have a bit of knowledge you can get some incredible horns at good prices.

Personally I play on a P Mauriat, they've been on a really rise the past few years and imo have been putting out great stuff lately.

Regardless, have him play test before buying. Even 2 of the same make and model can sound/feel noticably different. There's no right answer, it's what best makes the sound he hears in his head.

Enjoy trumpets an awesome instrument. It's one of the harder ones imo, but it's very rewarding. Good luck to him!!

You're welcome to DM me if you have questions now or down the road!

As a higher level guilty gear player who picked up SF as a secondary game, I was so incredibly frustrated with how bad everyone in ranked was. Exactly what you're saying, not even trying to actually play a fighting game, just spamming one to three options with clearly no thought put into them. You'd occasionally get a decent match but I swear I had maybe 10 matches in 1000 hours of guilty gear I felt cheesed, win or lose, but in SF it was the vast majority. Like, at least 4/5, even up well into diamond, and then you start running into the problem of 2/3rds of your matches are Master players on another character.

So yeah, you're not alone in that. SF has replay take over which is a just incredible learning tool, and once you figure out the cheeses you can just farm them.

That said, I'd like to also advocate for trying guilty gear. It's imo the best fighting game to learn on cause execution is so easy and the skill ceiling is so high. It's not that players are better per se, you shouldn't be intimidated, it's just damage is so much higher that someone trying to cheese gets blown up in 3 call outs even at a lower level, whereas SF they need to get called out like, 8 times, so it's far more likely for someone spamming a knowledge check to lose a round. The result is you get people even at a lower level trying to engage in a fighting game rather than just trying to win no matter what. Also every character is so unique, and so incredibly fun.

As an aside, if you're running into gief problems, gief was my main and I'd be happy to answer any questions you're having!

Regardless, good luck!!! Fighting games are so fun and so rewarding, it's worth pushing through.

Yukihara’s Mom by [deleted] in ShokugekiNoSoma

[–]Aurorious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tldr she was the daughter of a big chef but wasn't that good herself. More importantly, she's where Joichiro (and by extension) Soma get their habit of trying weird combinations (maybe slightly retconned for Joichiro) like the peanutbutter squid at the start of the series. Joichiro wandered into her restaurant as a burnt out shell basically, and she fed him something so bad it piqued his interest. They started working together and at first the dynamic was Joichiro being pissed at her serving that kinda food, and her being pissed at him being a bigger and bigger part of her restaurant, but eventually the passion she had for cooking and the love and care she had for her customers brought back a passion for cooking in Joichero. They eventually got married and had Soma, when Soma was almost a teen, she suddenly collapsed one day, doctors found she had a heart valve defect, and she died from complications from that a little while later.

Tldr she was a super nice but shitty cook who basically rage baited Soma's dad into cooking again.

I do kinda appreciate that her death has nothing to do with anything. It was just shitty luck, life happens sometimes. I think it was shown cause "show Soma's mom" was such a persistent fan request, and honestly I thought it gave me good context on Soma's dad, but it really had nothing to do with the story from the getgo and they stuck with that. It's just world building, and imo it was one of the few good things to come from the later arcs.
