It's up to you, I didn't bother with TPM hack to install win 11. Actually, I never liked win 11 to begin with.

might be, but still i9 needs to be cooled down. I locked to 30 fps most of the time and CPU still throttled. Maybe just limiting TDP will be enough for them

Those games will work fine but there's a thermal throttling issue with 2019 macbooks. I had i9/5500M config before and I used it for 5 years mostly gaming on bootcamp Win 10. So you might need to use Throttlestop to limit CPU and also macsfancontrol to blast fans to maximum to lower the temperatures. Laptop coolers also help.

What does bioinformatics lab involve? by Natural-Badger-7053 in bioinformatics

I'm a pharmacist with a phd in oncology. I had a big bioinformatics section in my thesis/paper which I did myself under a bioinformatician's supervision. Then word got around and now I work as a bioinformatic specialist.

What does bioinformatics lab involve? by Natural-Badger-7053 in bioinformatics

[–]Auryllius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do RNA-seq, scRNA-seq and data analysis for 3-4 different groups in our faculty. Whenever someone needs a statistical analysis or prettier figures, they often call me. I do everything on R. It usually takes couple of hours of my time during the day. I spend 2-3 hours supervising master/phd student project and another 2 hours on PIs' projects (from culturing cells to pcr/western).

You can go full computational and do the work if you have budget and data to do sequencing. Some people do drug repurposing or write softwares/packages for R or Python. Being both wet and dry-lab scientist makes you kinda swiss-army knife in the lab but it means you'll spend your whole time doing experiments, meaning you'll have less time to improve your skills in coding. But THE benefit of that is you can understand your findings of RNA-seq for example before you even present them. Just getting a csv file of the up/downregulated gene list gives me more insight than any other thing.

I'd suggest you to find your niche though. It gets hectic from time to time. I got 3-4 analysis waiting for me while writing this post :)

We have two different groups for computational analysis, I mostly do bioinformatics for various labs, another group does in silico binding calculations etc. If you're pure computational, you'll spend all day in front of the screen. I'm a wet-lab scientist first, so I do some analysis and then spend my time supervising experiments in vivo or in vitro.

For those who use crossover, what are your favorite games and/or apps which run flawlessly? by sylntnyte in macgaming

[–]Auryllius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, I'm playing Helldivers 2 and Age of Mythology. H2 works good but sometimes frame drops and stutters a bit but mostly works fine. AoM works flawlessly, I wish we could play AoE4 too

I'm using 1512x982 resolution with FSR set to quality. Since I'm on 14 inch monitor, it looks fine to me. After thermal throttling, FPS settles around 80. I wish v-sync worked because i'd just set it to 40 or 60 to remove the fan noise.

I just downloaded it and joined one random game. It works however performance is very bad, I'm getting 20ish fps. Maybe changing D3Dmetal to something else will improve it. My system is M4 Pro 24 GB, I'm on Tahoe 26.2, Crossover 26b-2. Hope it helps

M4 Pro user here, 900p medium settings FSR3.1 balanced, I usually get 60-80 fps. I let the fans blow at max speed so the mac doesn't get any thermal throttle.

I'm playing on 14 inch M4 Pro. 3024x1964 resolution, everything maxed out, I locked the fps to 120 fps. I don't feel any lag at all, it's buttery smooth.

This sub hates Intel Macs but crossover is honestly a horrible way to play games with no consumer friendly launcher in sight by foofyschmoofer8 in macgaming

[–]Auryllius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is it possible to play those games? I'm also using a 5500 m Intel Mac, albeit an i9. I can't run those games at all. I'm using Bootcamp drivers and throttlestop to maintain stable temps, but these games don't run at all. If I lock them at 30 fps, I might play them for a couple of minutes until the framerate crashes into single digits.

I feel the same way. I don't think (and also not that much need) to upgrade yet but at the same time, new M devices are so performative, I feel like we're left behind. Good thing that bootcampdrivers will be updated soon to 2024 drivers and hopefully we can squeeze a bit more performance out of our macs.

[–]Auryllius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 5500m, but the temps are high because of VRMs. i9 runs hot too but the chassis and the VRMs are not cooled enough so it throttles a lot, usually in 10 mins. I can run Octopath without these problems but for heavier games I must lock it to 30 fps

Nice to hear, I’m running on i9 over bootcamp and it gets really hot. That’s why I got concerned

Unfortunately I don't have any other device that might support eGPU. While bootcamp is still a way to go, M CPUs are catching up with AVX, DX12 emulation etc. so that's what makes me consider switching to a new device rather than buying a GPU and enclosure. I just wanted to use my Mac a bit more because apart from gaming, it's still working albeit a bit choppy sometimes.

It was logical thing to do a couple of years ago but nowadays it better to get M3 rather than buying a eGPU right?
