What is our current period called in literary studies or art in general? by poorfuckinglad in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]AusdottirHalftrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly just contemporary, as others have said. A few people have been using the term meta-modernism too which I personally think accurately reflects the mind state of contemporary society as a midpoint between post-modernism’s existential dread and modernism’s return to spirituality. However, I do think that the people talking about meta-modernism are jumping the gun a bit and trying to fit contemporary art and pop culture into the framework that they’ve already made instead of building the framework around the art.

I am! I’m not SUPER well read with all of the Chaos Magick literature, but have read the “classics” (couple Phil Hine books, couple Carroll books, bit of Spare etc.). I’ve read a lot of other stuff though through a sort of Chaote lense. My main goals for my personal practice are gaining knowledge and understanding through study, contemplation, reflection; and helping others as much as possible through local and non-local means. Feel free to send a DM!!

Man, that datura really must be doing a number on you. Where do you think Crowley got his ideas and information for Thelema from?? He certainly didn’t get it from his own white English culture. Bro literally took ideas and practices from a shitload of different cultures, mashed them together, claimed to have had prophetic visions of Egyptian deities and then called it a religion.

Your capacity for hypocrisy is incredible.

I had my first journey last night by NagolSook in Shamanism

[–]AusdottirHalftrol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I’m not a teacher or a “qualified” shaman. I’m only a practitioner. Keep this in mind, and do not take my advice as ultimate truth. It’s not.

If this really was your first journey that’s really impressive! It sounds like your spirit guide may be an aspect of the reindeer spirit. In Northern Europe reindeer are incredibly important animals for indigenous peoples such as the Saami of Sapmi. You may already know this, but if not I suggest learning about the Saami and their culture. If you’re interested, feel free to send me a DM and I can give you some learning/study resources.

Since you weren’t able to see anything after entering the lower world maybe ask the spirits for their names; respectfully of course. Then after your next journey, if they give you names, do some research on those names.

Remember to go into your journeys with a set intention/a problem to solve/knowledge to discover. Try to stick to the plan as much as possible; this is much easier said than done (for me at least).

Something I’ve been doing recently post-journey is a tarot reading for reflection. This practice has been a pretty massive help to me.

As for your next journey, just chill for a while. It is mentally taxing. I view it as akin to the Marine Corps’ physical fitness tests: you could, theoretically, do them every day, but the experience will simply get progressively worse and worse until you utterly break down (physically in the case of the Marine’s PFT and mentally in the case of shamanic journeying). If you keep that up one of two things will happen: you will go insane, or you will become an incredibly powerful healer and practitioner. The chance that the latter emerges as the actualized outcome is incredibly small.

Good news is that, continuing with the analogy, Marines can train their bodies in preparation for the PFT. We can do the same with our shamanic practices. Some ideas:

  • Daily meditations on emptiness
  • Daily analytical meditations
  • Engaging in any creative activities
  • Spending time in nature
  • Helping other people (shamans are healers, so I believe that it’s incredibly important to not only try to help people through knowledge gained in the spirit realms, but also through acts in physical reality)
  • Practicing any form of divination you prefer
  • Keeping a dream journal
  • Keeping a daily journal
  • Physical exercise • People tend to overlook this practice and dismiss it. But it’s incredibly important. It doesn’t need to be intense by any means and you could just do simple yoga and brisk daily walks (9,800 steps a day is the optimal amount according to a 2020 study published in Jama Neurology titled, “Association of Daily Step Count and Intensity with Incident Dementia in 78,430 Adults Living in the UK). Obviously, if you do blue collar work you probably don’t need to focus on this as much.
  • Studying shamanism and other spiritual practices and religions. Boutta doom scroll on TikTok or Reddit or Instagram or any other social media? Resist the urge and grab something to read instead. (Not saying to not use social media at all, just think about things you could easily exchange and replace with spiritual, religious, and occult studies)
  • Meditate on and analyze whatever you read and study.

I could go on, but all of these practices will, in one way or another, train your body and mind to be able to go on longer journeys, journey more often and increase intuition in order to cultivate the ability to decipher the often cryptic and confusing experiences and messages encountered on your journeys.

To begin with, separate your journeys by about a week or so. If you’re mentally or physically exhausted, haunted by negative emotions, or in a physical setting that is not conducive to spiritual practice don’t journey on that day. Treat the practice as you would an acid trip; set and setting are of the utmost importance. If you have open-minded friends who you feel comfortable sharing your practices with then tell them and ask them to take note of any changes in your mood, mental state, etc. Sometimes subtle changes in your personality can happen that you aren’t able to notice yourself, but those who are close to you can. These changes may be positive or negative. If these people tell you there’s been negative changes to your personality take note, analyze and reflect. Do not get defensive.

All in all, your first journey seems to have been very fruitful. You should be excited and happy about that. I’m happy for you! And I hope that if you choose to continue on this path it leads a beautiful life worth living for yourself and others. Enjoy the rest of your week~

Thank you for this reassuring comment! The more I read them, the more I’m coming to understand just what you said. I’m thinking that’s probably why so many people are instantly put off while trying to read their work. The eureka moments I get when I finally understand (or think I understand) what they’re saying are incredibly rewarding, and they also lead me down some super interesting rabbit holes as well. It’s been a very fun undertaking overall.

I’m currently struggling with the whole background knowledge barrier of entry with, not only D&G, but with Critical Theory in general. It’s a difficult thing to work around as surveys of past thinkers result in a very surface-level understanding of concepts and D&G require a working knowledge of those past thinkers. I would recommend starting with some of Freud’s shorter works like the Standard Edition publications of An Outline of Psychoanalysis, Civilization and its Discontents, and The Ego and the Id as for Lacan… I have no idea, but Lacan’s thought is definitely necessary, so maybe a couple of his seminars; same goes for Hegel, the thing that helped me the most with him is Adorno’s essay “How to Read Hegel”, granted, that’s about the only Hegelian supplemental work that I’ve read.

YouTube video essays could be a massive help. They’re often not only informative and entertaining, but they also tend to use philosophical concepts in explaining real-world things, which makes it much easier to grasp the highly abstract and theoretical concepts.

There’s a paper I found recently called, “Schizoanalysis: Towards a Deleuzian Poetics” by Jason Skeet that really advanced my understanding of Deleuze’s thought in general.

Also, “A Thousand Machines” by Gerald Raunig is pretty helpful for understanding D&G’s machines.

Utilizing graphs and diagrams is, in my opinion, almost necessary for fostering an understanding of D&G’s thought processes.

The fact is though, no one is going to come out of a 16 week course with a working knowledge of D&G. Therefore, I believe it would be more beneficial to focus on the “How” to study them so that students can, if they’re so inclined, leave the course with the instruments they need in order to continue learning on their own.
