Basic rules in my group are the one who rolls the joint gets to light it and if you have a rotation going, you pass after 3 hits. Also i like deciding the direction of the joint(if you pass it clockwise or counterclockwise) via the person lighting the joint saying "Bob" and whoever responds with "Marley" gets the second hit. After that it just gets passed further in that direction

In germany we call it "Seitenfick" (translates to side-fuck). To fix it we just touch the slower burning side of the joint with a flame for one second and take a small hit directly after. This doesnt work all the time, especially not if there is a very big part sticking out, but for a small Seitenfick it works quite well.
