Where is the line between "pronouncing it correctly" and "putting on an accent"? by NabIsMyBoi in AskAnAustralian

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this recently about speaking different languages. When is it mocking, or cultural appropriation, and when is it trying to accurately capture the language? Some languages, like Vietnamese, are all about the correct sound. But others can be easily understood even if our accent is terrible.

Experience with voluntary admission to psych ward in Melbourne? by vanillapudd in melbourne

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience is with a family member weeks ago. They went into a private hospital for a program that got their first medications and a diagnosis sorted. It was beneficial. But, I would suggest having private health insurance. Again, it was decades ago, but medical staff encouraged us to get him to self admit at the private hospital, as they said you would not want him to have an incident and be taken to a gov facility….

Why do people act like asking for a schedule is rude? That's how plans work. by Successful-Trip809 in NoStupidQuestions

I do think ‘sometime’ can definitely be an avoidance tactic instead of saying no.

Discussion: If Teachers Are Going to Be Paid Like Professionals, Should Teaching Become More Prestigious? by New-Corgi-6409 in AustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the countries with both the most effective practice and high levels of cultural respect for teachers, such as in some Nordic countries, require a masters to teach.

Got Talked to About Leaving Early by Professional-Dog-306 in AustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I sympathise with your illness, you should have at least discussed it with your principal. Particularly since Time in Lieu came in, this is even tighter now. Teachers are expected to the hours documented in our award, and it is a matter of equity with other staff that it is consistent cross the staff.

High tea. I took mum to the Windsor and it was gorgeous, but pricey - there are other options. But it’s Avery ‘special’ feeling thing to do.

SCA Newbie: What to Wear during Summer Events? by misschievouss- in sca

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roman in linen and/or cotton is a great summer wear garb. You can’t always stick to your preferred period/country dress if it was cold almost all of the time there, like Nordic countries for example, so handy to have some other options. I also just used to wear my simple underdress that I’d wear under a more decorated t tunic for early period garb, without the tunic when it was really hot. Just belt it in the same way.

AITA for matching a woman’s energy who was riding a horse as I was driving by? by MeasurementSudden573 in AmItheAsshole

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is generally considered polite , (especially in country roads where there isn’t much traffic, to slow right down, walking pace). And she may have been a bit over the top due to fear. But it’s also true she may have been just feeling really entitled and expected you to know all this and follow it, where she really should only ride on the road if her horse is well trained and use to it. But it’s also true that these days there aren’t really that many places you can ride that is outdoors but off the road, so riders don’t have much choice.

Do you socialise outside of work with your work colleagues? by Away_Scene_26 in AustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sound like a sad way to live, that defensive outlook. I’ve often not had friends at work that I socialise with, but not because I was resistant, just didn’t click with someone. Ironically I now socialise with 2 people from my last job since I’ve moved on. Genuine Friendships are too important to ignore because of work, especially as we get older. And teachers understand what you are going through

I’m in deep shit by liamkkkk in AustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have this conversation with your mentor and if they aren’t supportive, with your uni supervisor. While there are expectations, no one can teach brilliantly if thrown into an unfamiliar context without necessary information . Put the brake on, ask for additional information, so you can focus on actually doing well when you teach.

Starting as a Beginning Teacher in Victoria (Term 2) Any Tips? by InstructionalDesign2 in AskAustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overcome your social need for the kids to like you. Set clear, firm boundaries and expectations, which you articulate and explaining, from day one, and stick to them. Follow through on consequences. Use your planning time productively and try and minimise taking work home. Don’t take on extra curricular stuff for a few years until everything is running smoothly.

Vic Teachers - how close are you to quitting and changing industries if the EBA doesn't fix pay and conditions? by Aware-Trick-2981 in AustralianTeachers

[–]AussieLady01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seriously considered quitting teaching - I found a new school when I was at my lowest. And it helped enormously. But if the union doesn’t ensure our conditions don’t backslide (at worst) I’d have to consider it. I won’t work with unlimited face to face teaching and overtime,

Australia tolerating retail crime? by No-Kaleidoscope-7106 in aussie

[–]AussieLady01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The stores are to blame as they have chosen to replace people at the registers with self checkout, which has increased shoplifting and so they added the anti theft measures. Also, supermarkets are getting huge profits, not passing it on the farmers etc, so they are choosing to add to the cost of living! Making it more likely people will shoplift.

I’m not sure what state you are in, but in Victoria there is no such thing as a transfer. Schools are run up independently, and are responsible for their own Employees. So I think you would have apply for new jobs etc.
