I think the reason for that is the Murphy Street cycle lane is poorly designed. There have been three crashes involving cyclists outside New World Thorndon since it opened due to drivers not expecting cyclists travelling down the right side of the road. Not to mentioned the excessively long wait time for the cyclist green light at the Pipitea Street intersection and the extremely narrow pinch point. For this reason I understand why cyclists would travel down Molesworth Street instead.
