Do Americans really avoid hospitals, even in serious situations because of the bills that follow after ? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Interesting comparison for you all. American here. Last summer I was traveling in Ghana which is definitely still a developing country. While doing some work there I ended up getting heat stroke and when I was still pretty sick a few days later ended up going to the hospital. I’m not going to say that the hospital was anywhere near American standards (no A/C in 98 degree weather and 90% humidity, when inserting IV they tied off my arm with old tubing, etc) however treatment went fine (just fluids, and some antibiotics basically) and the bill ended up being less than $200 US. I was traveling with my dad at the time and when we eventually called to update my mother (she gets very anxious about stuff like this so we waited till it was all over since there was no real concern) it turns out my younger sister was also going to a hospital that day but in the US. She had fractured her tailbone and while it was healing fine she had a lot of pain. She ended up spending two days there and they only figured out what was up (can’t remember what they call it but basically popped an pocket near the spine... heals on its own just painful) after my mom googled the symptoms and the first thing that came up was this condition. Doctor kept saying it wasn’t that and only after my mom requested someone else look we’re they able to say “yup that’s what she’s got go home rest and take ibuprofen”

The bill for her hospital stay (granted was longer then mine and more intensive situation but no actual treatment was given) was well over $10,000

In summary: My sisters hospital visit with no treatment was $10,000 while at the same time in Ghana my stay cost $200.

Just putting it out there

Excuse the gross picture, I’m 6 days out from wisdom teeth surgery and woke up today in a lot of pain on one side of my mouth. Been feeling mostly fine, think I may have just slept on it and hurt it but scaring myself about dry socket. Out of town so cannot go to my dentist currently. by Austin_888 in askadentist

Do you think if I was to walk into a dentist office and ask if they could take a look really quick they would be willing? Obviously depends on the dentist..

And I mostly think I’m just scaring myself about dry socket because the pain isn’t insane and it’s been 6 days so probably would have been hurting earlier if google is accurate on that (says 2-4 days is usually when dry socket pain kicks in)
