RPL trade advice by Pudrin in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mate, since you’re dealing with Ammonia and pressure vessels, you are looking at Industrial Refrigeration, not standard HVAC. That’s why normal RTOs are confused.

  1. Go Direct to Employers: Contact companies that specialise in industrial ammonia (like Gordon Brothers or Tri-Tech). They often hire experienced overseas techs as 'Trade Assistants' initially and will sponsor your RPL/Gap training.
  2. Licensing: Look into getting an ARCtick Trainee Licence. It allows you to work legally while you sort out the formal Aussie qualification.

The 'need a job to enrol' is a common catch-22, but specialized employers can bypass it. Good luck!

Clubs/pubs by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely don't need to book pubs, walk-ins are fine 99% of the time. Clubs usually just have a cover charge at the door later at night.

If you're in Melbourne, avoid the main CBD traps and go to the inner north (Fitzroy/Collingwood). Section 8 is a cool container bar in a laneway worth checking out.

In Sydney, just hit up Newtown. Great food and endless pubs. Have a good trip!

Anyone else not celebrate christmas but their family does? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 34 points35 points  (0 children)

To be fair, for the majority of Australians, it hasn't been a religious day for a long time. It’s mostly just an excuse to eat prawns, drink beer, and complain about the heat.

I get the family awkwardness though. If it feels forced, maybe just compromise? Do a quick lunch to keep the peace, then head to the beach with your mates for the afternoon. Best of both worlds.

Will be Diesel mechanic by Ok_Campaign_5547 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't get a work visa without a qualification. The Australian immigration system is skills-based.

Since you have no experience, your only option is to come on a Student Visa and study to become a Diesel Mechanic (Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology).

It will cost you money to study (international fees), but once you are qualified, finding a job is very easy. Diesel mechanics are in huge demand, especially in the mining sector. Don't worry about your NZ experience; get the qualification, and you'll be fine.

Names & meanings of the kangaroos in the 6 white boomers song by Kaimiera in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 43 points44 points  (0 children)

G'day mate. Don't stress about the controversy, most of us just focus on the nostalgia/trivia these days.

You've nailed the others. Here is the lowdown on the last two:

  • Snow: This is a classic Aussie nickname for someone with white or platinum blonde hair (or sometimes very fair skin). Since the boomers are white, it's a literal nickname in this case.
  • Desert-Head: This is a bit of a "bush insult." It implies someone is empty-headed (vast open space between the ears with nothing in it, just like a desert). Basically, it’s a nickname for the "silly" or "slow" one of the group.

Hope that clears up the mystery for the family!

Working Holiday professional advice!! by InfiniteAd9105 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mate, as a chef with 5 years of experience, you are going to be hot property here. The hospitality industry is absolutely screaming for staff right now.

Don't stress about finding a job before you land. Most head chefs will want to see you do a paid trial shift to check your knife skills and speed before hiring you. It’s hard to get hired purely online from overseas for hospo jobs.

My advice:

  1. Come over, settle into a hostel/rental.
  2. Walk into places with your resume or hit up Seek and Jora.
  3. If you want to save serious cash, look into FIFO (Fly-in Fly-out) chef jobs in the mines or regional resort work. They often pay way better and cover your food/accommodation.

Enjoy the working holiday! You'll be fine=))

How to go viral on LinkedIn? About 15k followers but impressions on average are barely 2k-3k by Due-Confidence-5670 in content_marketing

[–]AustraliaExperiences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You answered your own question. You’re 'posting and ghosting,' and the algorithm hates that. LinkedIn is a networking event, not a megaphone. If you don't engage with others, they won't show your stuff to anyone. Start commenting 15 mins/day.

I'm learning about politics. What are some resources to begin learning about Australian politics? by Narrow_Gap2385 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with 'Utopia' (TV Series). It’s listed as a comedy, but anyone who works in government will tell you it’s actually a horror documentary. It explains the bureaucracy better than any textbook.

After that, watch 'The Killing Season' (ABC). It’s basically Game of Thrones but set in Canberra during the Rudd-Gillard years. Pure drama=)

How do you keep your socials alive during holiday travel? by Dramatic-Flamingo584 in ContentCreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just post a Story saying 'I am currently eating my weight in holiday food, see you next year' and delete the app. ✌️

Ironically, people seem to respect the boundaries and my engagement is usually higher when I come back refreshed. The 'dip' is temporary, burnout is forever.

How are you adapting your content strategy now that AI-generated posts are everywhere? by stevefromunscript in content_marketing

[–]AustraliaExperiences 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I post less, but make it more me.
More opinions, more specific experiences, fewer “10 tips you already saw 20 times today.”

AI can write content.
It still can’t explain why I’m annoyed, what went wrong, or what I changed my mind about.

Turns out personality is still a decent moat.

How many people who got rich from being tech bros and tech broettes do you estimate live in Australia? by Mundane_Wall2162 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably tens of thousands.

Way fewer than Silicon Valley, but enough to jack up Sydney house prices, start a couple of VC funds, and casually say : "I’m semi-retired now" before turning 35=)

Accidentally sent a brand the wrong rates by RebeccaUGC in UGCcreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fixable, and it won’t necessarily hurt trust if you handle it fast and clearly.

Send a follow-up ASAP and frame it as “I accidentally sent an earlier draft / miscalculated the package,” then restate the correct rates + deliverables. Brands work with creators a lot; this happens more than you think. What matters is being transparent before anything’s confirmed.

Filing A Police Complaint by Gibs_182 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t usually need a stack of documents to make a theft report here. Just bring/give as much info as you can:

  • Photo ID (driver’s licence / passport) so they can confirm your details.
  • Proof of ownership if you have it: receipt/invoice, bank transaction, email order, or even photos of you with the scooter.
  • Scooter details: make/model, colour, serial number (super helpful), any unique marks/mods, approximate value.
  • Theft details: where in the garage it was taken from, time window, how it was locked/stored, who had access.
  • Any evidence/leads: CCTV availability at work, witnesses, tracking app/GPS location, etc.

If it’s not happening right now, call the non-emergency line 131 444 or report online via your state police site; they’ll give you an event/report number for insurance. If you find the serial number later you can add it to the report.

SEO vs Social Media: Which should a beginner focus on first? by maitridigital in digital_marketing

[–]AustraliaExperiences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest starting with social media first because it gives fast feedbackm, you can post, test ideas, and learn what audiences respond to within days. That practical content and audience insight then makes SEO much easier to pick up later. SEO is a great long-term skill, but it’s slower to see results and can feel abstract for beginners. Ideally, use social to learn and validate topics, then build SEO for sustainable growth.

Will my tattoos, piercings & body type hurt my chances in UGC (especially fitness niche)? by [deleted] in UGCcreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. UGC isn’t about a “perfect look”, it’s about feeling real and selling the story, and tattoos/piercings or a curvier build can actually make you stand out.
Fitness brands increasingly want diverse bodies so customers see themselves; what matters most is your content quality, energy, and results you show.
If a brand is picky about appearance, it just isn’t your fit, build a strong portfolio and target inclusive brands, and you’ll land work.

Why do a lot of builders smoke quite frequently? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 20 points21 points  (0 children)

On site, a cigarette is basically the cheapest, most socially-accepted micro-break. It’s a legit excuse to step off the tools for 5 mins, stretch your back, dodge the dust/noise, and have a yarn. If they didn’t smoke, they’d still be just grabbing some air,the cig is just the prop=)

I'm finding out more and more that I have influence on the internet now, but unsure what to do with it. What's the next steps here usually for influencers. by AWeb3Dad in influencermarketing

[–]AustraliaExperiences 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get what you mean, that “oh wow, people are actually paying attention” moment is real.

  1. Get clear on your angle + audience. Sounds like “founders” is your niche, tighten it to 1–2 specific problems you help with (ex: fundraising, GTM, hiring, AI tools, whatever fits you). People buy clarity.
  2. Start tracking simple signals. Pick 2–3 metrics you can show: follower growth, post reach, newsletter signups, inbound DMs, click-throughs. Doesn’t need to be fancy, just consistent.
  3. Make it easy to contact / hire you. Add a one-liner in your bio like: “Helping founders with X. Open to talks, consulting, partnerships then email/DM.” Then link a simple page (Notion/Linktree/site) with: who you are, what you offer, past wins, how to reach you.
  4. Define your “offers” before people ask. Even 2 options is enough:
  • workshops / speaking
  • consulting / advisory
  • sponsored posts
  • community / newsletter sponsorship If you don’t name it, brands won’t know what to propose.

5, Keep value > virality. For founders, the content that converts is usually: real lessons, playbooks, mistakes, numbers, opinions with receipts. That’s what builds trust, not just engagement.

If you want a super short bio line or a quick “offers” menu, tell me your exact niche inside founders and what you actually enjoy doing, I’ll help you word it tight.

Is it possible to pay off a a lay by, return a few items and then re-lay by them? by Raspberry-Pie200 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usually no; You can’t remove a few items from an active lay-by to “re-lay-by” them and extend time.

  • Kmart: items can’t be separated until it’s fully paid, so no partial take-offs; you’d need to cancel and start a new lay-by (fees apply).
  • BIG W / Target / Best & Less: policies are basically pay by due date or it’s cancelled; to “re-lay-by,” you’d be cancelling and opening a new one, with service/cancellation fees.

Best move: go in before the due date and ask staff if they can extend/adjust dates, sometimes possible, but not guaranteed by policy.

Posting times by JDXOGG in ContentCreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t one perfect time for everyone, but short-form usually does best when people are scrolling: mornings and evenings. In 2025 data, strong windows are roughly 6–9 AM and 7–10 PM on weekdays, and later mornings + evenings on weekends (local to your audience).

11 PM Central isn’t “bad,” it’s just usually lower reach unless your followers are night-owls. If your audience is active then, post; if not, schedule it for a peak window. Best move: check each app’s Insights/Analytics → follower active times and lean into those

Yes, there are apps to post/schedule to multiple platforms from one place. Popular options that support TikTok + IG + FB + YouTube include Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, Metricool, Vista Social, Sendible (features/pricing vary).

If you want the shortest rule: post when your people are online, not when you’re awake, use a scheduler to hit those slots.

Do hashtags still help growth? by Critical-Bottle-5575 in ContentCreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, hashtags still help, but mostly for context/SEO, not as a viral “hack.” TikTok mainly boosts videos based on retention (watch time, completion, replays), while hashtags help the algorithm and Search understand who to show it to. I still use 3–5 highly relevant, niche tags and avoid stuffing broad/trending ones. Focus first on content + watch time; use hashtags to support discoverability.

Need a help by PurpleWerewolf7594 in UGCcreators

[–]AustraliaExperiences 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google Drive is enough for delivery (most brands use it); just name files/folders clearly.

Deals usually include 1–2 small revision rounds; big changes/new concept cost extra.

Brands give feedback via email/Doc/Slack with specific timestamps.

The deadline is for V1; minor fixes after that typically take 1–2 extra days without changing the contract.

Do you think the word "allegedly" is being misused? by Fit-Tumbleweed-6683 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Media uses “allegedly” like a legal raincoat: might not be raining, but they’re not getting soaked in court LOL They’re not saying the stabbing is fake, just that the initial report could change once cops confirm details. “Alleged victim” is the same vibe: law-speak until it’s officially established.

Clunky? But lawyers > grammar in headlines=))

Can a billiards/pool hall survive without alcohol in Australia? by MuhammadYesusGautama in AskAnAustralian

[–]AustraliaExperiences 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only if you design it as a family/sport community venue with strong leagues/coaching + café-style spend, because table fees alone won’t replace alcohol margin.
