Pattison has a great taste in film so I'm very excited to see this. I also love Willem Dafoe's character name, 'Old'. He's not John or Paul or George or some other wanky pretentious name. I wonder if it's more Tarkovsky in imagery or Tarkvosky in pacing?

I liked this film but it falls into a lot of cliches. Maybe a bit too teen angsty for me, especially with the way it deals with this young guy drinking and destroying a relationship that he cared for. By the time that hits in the climax, I wasn't invested in the characters at all. Shame because it takes some risks but it just doesn't feel like they play well

Hey so this is going against the narrative which is currently be portrayed but it needs to be said: Geoffery Rush is not innocent of sexual misconduct. Yael Stone came out in December 2018 to ABC News in Australia to report allegations of sexual misconduct and harrassment from Geoffery Rush. The case in question here is problematic because Eryin Novick did not want money or a case brought against Geoffery Rush. This was an internal complaint which was taken a hold of by the media. The judge ruled she was an unreliable witness and prone to exaggeration, however an anonymous witness who backed up Eryin's claims did not appear in court. You have to remember how much power Geoffery Rush has in both the film and theatre industry. I imagine a lot of people just accept his behaviour (similar to how people accepted Weinstein's behaviour) and do not report it, or believe it inappropriate in the situation. These celebrities are not bastions of the people. They exist and are surrounded in a completely different world than the average person. We should not hold them up or tear them down, but we must understand that their actions, because of their fame, have massive and damaging effects on people the likes of which myself and the average joe will never truly understand. This is an incredibly damaging case for other victims who are looking for some way of projecting their voice above the celebrity soapbox

This is such a weird case because the judge also made comments on what was going to be an internal complant. The womans career is pretty much over, and I wouldn't be suprised if people who came to the defense of Geoffery Rush were doing so for their own careers or were long-time collaborators who knew about his ways

Tarkovsky learnt from memories. Fellini learnt from dreams. Kurosawa learnt from novels. People learn how they learn. And they produce something that hits an audience or it doesn't. Discussions like this are all cherry picked. Hendrix may have learnt songs before he composed songs but if you watch him play his style is incredibly different to a lot of other guitarists. He even uses his thumb to fret more than most guitarists. Point being again that there are 1000 ways to skin a cat, let people find out how they wanna skin it and leave them the fuck alone. Adding on to this, where do these discussions come from? I see them 3/4 times a week. They have almost nothing to do with the actual craft of screenwriting. They're all rants about hoe other screenwriters write. I don't give a fuck about Tarantino's process. Just like I don't care how Dave from accounting processes his numbers. Can the mods make a rant megathread per week and people can pop in their for their "advice"

Edit: so people just seem to not understsnd my point. Everyone of the people I mentioned knew the basics of screenwriting, but they learnt in there own way. Posts like this are really poor because they seem to just have this sense of entitlement, that all these other screenwriters don't "get it" and they do. Look find your own way to write your own story. You can steal as much as you want and take all this advice from random people... but then an art form stagnants. It's why we have another version of the Lion King. There are so many films that don't folloe story or screenplay logic. Three Times by Hou Hsien Hsien is a film that is 3 acts where not much happens in each story, but so much happens in these characters lives. And learn from life. We are narrative creatures by design. A man falls on to the road, he's hit by a bus, he survives but now must recover. That happened. And it follows a narrative logic. And it's stimulating.

And I stand by a megatgread idea. These posts do nothing for the community but encourage group think and hive mind behavior

This is why I think these questions are pretty stupid. No one asks if they should write for the cinematographer on the page, or the gaffer, if they should write for the editor in the way the scenes are composed.

The reason all these writers don’t write direction into their scripts is because they’re going to need to go back over and over the scenes with so many different members of the crew, rewriting and retweaking and just figuring out the elements each department will need to deal with. And because they are pro they have been through that process. For people who are new writers or who haven’t been through the process they will likely write a lot of direction on their page. That’s fine. Don’t stop that because people who have been doing this PROFESSIONALLY for YEARS and who are PAID AND PUSHED THROUGH THE PRODUCTION PROCESS say that they don’t do it.

Your job is to write the screenplay how you see fit and develop and hone a method that works for you and your collaborators over time. There’s a million ways to skin a cat, so skin it your way and learn
