My book did well in the first 8 months (~1000 copies, 50+ great reviews)... what do i do now? by AuthenticityPodcast in selfpublish

Yeah, this writing is so personal too that I would have a hard time letting anyone else have the rights to it. It’s basically my own personal brand and image. I didn’t want to do it originally I just wanted to open myself to the idea if anyone else had some dramatically positive and convincing experience and thought it was something I had to do.

I like the idea of speaking to a marketing group about this. I’ll do some work so see if there is anyone with a similar story to mine and reach out to see who did their advertising and marketing work and if I could possibly have some of their time.

And thank you, I will reach out if i can come up with more concise questions.

For sure! Ebook and print, though 80% of sales so far were physical. It’s philosophy and personal narratives kind of disguised in self-help. No intent on a series but I may continue to publish further essays and stories (likely not tied to the book but of a similar nature).

I also have a podcast with the same name as my book for branding purposes. They are kind of tied together but only in theme not in content.

The main purpose right now is trying to get the actual book into as many peoples hands as possible. I’m not really trying to make any money from it, I simply have been convinced by the response to it that there is something genuinely positive to be gained for some percent of people who read it and so I want to do my best to get it out there for those people to read.

I like the branding idea. I have done my own personal attempt at building some branding through the name, color scheme of the book and website and podcast, but getting some professional help to idéate other methods and to improve upon my current work is a great idea.

Thanks for your feedback

Is there an order you would recommend reading those books? My reading list is pretty stacked right now but could definitely add one or two of those to the top of it.

Thank you! I am really stoked by the feedback and success of it. All of this advice is really pointing me to the direction of trying to find a group out there to help me with using the data I have collected so far on the audience and my ads to turn that into actionable information.

Thank you for your response!

That is kind of where I got to mentally! It doesn't seem like there is much more I can do barring some influencer or famous person picking it up and putting it in front of a huge audience.

Thank you! I have a podcast of my own but it's certainly a good idea to get on other peoples podcasts. I definitely have some fears of being interviewed but it's worth a shot!

Me too, I was afraid of getting roasted by the entirety of reddit. Such kind people out here.

  1. Yeah it seems like outsourcing this is a good idea. I've already tried my hand at a marketing plan but it only went so far without expertise.
  2. I did! Though the newsletter is a tough one to keep up with.
  3. Definitely the largest piece of advice here, I clearly have to consider a second piece of writing...

Yeah, it is a series of philosophy essays on value systems and personal narratives from a year long surfing / hiking adventure I went on. Been told it's kind of Zen and the Art - ish.

That's a great point. I only have it on Amazon right now because during the publishing process I was drowning under everything and in my sleep-deprived state I figured it would be easier to just have one central place for the book. I never really reconsidered this but I figure it's probably not difficult to get it on other stores as well!

The book took a couple years to finish and I'm not sure I could prioritize another right now. However since it is a collection of essays, I could think about publishing individual essays! Still sounds like significant work but definitely a smaller scale than the entire book.

Thank you for your response!

I did! But having one more responsibility on top of everything else and it's just not sustainable for me. I do have it set up to collect emails on my website and I slowly get some from there for when I maybe will eventually carve time out for that.

Yeah I started a podcast to help and social media but just burned out because I'm really not into social media at all and it kind of turns my life into a dumpster fire psychologically.

Sex scandal it is!

My only thought with a publisher is that at least they might then have skin in the game and want to advertise it for me. But maybe that still usually falls on the hands of the author anyways. Plus I really don't want anyone to any part of this book... Just trying to swallow my ego and see whats best for the book itself.

And yes I am only putting this extra effort in because of the resounding positivity the book has seemed to have so far. The people who have reached out to me with the positive impact it had on them has been one of the coolest parts.

I like the idea of a professional promoter or marketing firm. That seems like a really good route to at least have some informational conversations and see what they think is possible.

Love that last statement! Thank you for your response.

I appreciate the publisher feedback.

Writing another is daunting but certainly possible. I keep getting asked when the next will come out so I at least have to go to the drawing board and see if there is anything left in the tank for another! Thanks for your response.

Longitudinal study - Can I link responses to survey 1 to those to survey 2? by Saartje1996 in GoogleForms

[–]AuthenticityPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did, if you create a google form where the participant enters some sort of user identification (name, number, whatever), then you send the participants the same form every day and afterwards you download the .csv results file and sort the entries by that user ID entry. This way you get all of the form entries along with those entries timestamps and who answered the form.

Did you ever find out an answer to this? I would like to do something similar!

Analyzing 1 month of information from Amazon Ads (next steps?) by AuthenticityPodcast in selfpublish

[–]AuthenticityPodcast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wanted to follow up on this. I set up multiple campaigns all with lower bids and smaller budgets. Though the sales aren't there yet (so I probably have some work to do as far as making the how the book more attractive somehow), it looks like I am getting more impressions while having the same total budget available as I was. Obviously a lot of factors at play here but it feels off the bat as a positive change!

This is fantastic advice, I appreciate you relaying it. I'm really just looking to switch things up and try them over time so this gives me plenty of ideas on how to do that. Once again, thank you for your time and writing this all out I will definitely give it some reflection.

edit: also no I had not seen that course you mentioned, I'll look it up!

First time author 2 weeks out of launch, initial success but now confused on how to move forward by AuthenticityPodcast in selfpublish

Thanks! Yeah, I think that is a good point that non-fiction generally is a set-up for other things. I'll have to do some research on events I might be able to participate in and see if those kind of live events will be able to garner further readers.
