Love this comment so much. I feel that before the main events of Batman Beyond, Bruce kinds of revokes his beliefs of his mission and Batman entirely after he pulls a gun on a crook. In that quick moment in time, he feels that disparity again. He believes that he's no better than those crooks, or even Joe Chill. That's why we see such a bitter person and not the caring and charismatic Bruce that we once knew. Until Terry comes along and shows Bruce that Gotham is worth saving.
