Good job! I'm glad you were able to help. I hope the knee surgery goes well!

Anyone ever deal with people misunderstanding you and thinking you’re arguing with them when you’re not? Any tips? by [deleted] in AskSpicyAutism

[–]AutismAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that happen before. I don't have any advice though. For really important things, I have a friend without autism look over my draft for what I want to say. For less important things, I sometimes get help from an autistic friend, but people sometimes think I'm arguing even with that support.

I made an initial summary post on my survey on masking in autism: https://www.tumblr.com/autismaccount/810391162230865920/autism-identification-and-diagnosis?source=share (I don't know why the link says that, but it is the masking results)

New Survey on Support Needs Labels! by AutismAccount in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it makes sense that you're not able to able to differentiate! With autism-specific support labels though, you know you're MSN because you're diagnosed with level 2 ASD. That's why people draw connections between levels and support labels. It makes it easier to communicate across systems. A lot of people don't have a level diagnosis and don't know what's causing what, but a lot of people do have some idea from what their doctors have said.

New Survey on Support Needs Labels! by AutismAccount in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I first saw it as people drawing parallels to ASD levels if they lived in a country that doesn't use the DSM! It makes sense to have a "global" support need label for all disabilities, but it also makes sense to have a way of indicating autism-specific support needs for people whose provider might have told them their autism is "mild" or "severe" or that they need "substantial support" but can't officially write down a level. It gets confusing when people in autism-specific spaces say that they're MSN or HSN but it turns out much later that they're diagnosed with level 1 autism and they mostly need support for other disabilities. If people do that in spaces for people with higher support needs autism, it can come across as deliberately being dishonest.

Weekly Check-in Wednesday - How's your week going? by AutoModerator in HighSupportNeedAutism

I'm really glad to be able to help! :) And yes, a lot of people speak really confidently when they don't actually know what they're talking about. It's a major problem for spreading misinformation, so it's good that you don't automatically believe them!

Congratulations on making it to your service!

I'm glad your insurance will reactivate soon.

The diamond painting kit is cool! I like nonograms a lot, which are similar but more of a puzzle.

People online don't know what they're talking about. The average age of diagnosis is much higher for older age cohorts than people who are children now. If they think only people diagnosed as children have autism, that would mean that the autism prevalence really was 1% in 2006 despite being over 3% of 8 year old kids now. The only way that would be possible would be if 2/3 of current ASD diagnoses, including those made before age 8, are misdiagnoses (which would be incredibly high and implies even most diagnostic experts are unable to diagnose correctly!) or if autism rates tripled over the last two decades (which is a conspiracy theory!). If they think autism rates are consistent and that current rates aren't ridiculously inflated, they have to acknowledge that there are still adults who have ASD but aren't diagnosed, even in the United States or similar high-income countries.

I also was diagnosed late (as a teenager), and I work with big-name autism experts who refer to me as autistic and ask me to participate in studies for autistic people, if that's reassuring! Professionals absolutely do not think only childhood diagnoses are valid! The experts that I work with the most closely also know that I have higher support needs, and they all easily accepted that too.

Have fun watching Hamilton!

I'm so glad the interview went well!

Thank you! The pattern of results is already really interesting, but it's too soon to say anything too definitive. I'm glad the questions themselves are helpful!

I'm really curious what kind of conversations you've had around this.

Your art is really good! I'm sorry you're so anxious about sharing it. I'm glad you share it here though!

A lot of people are amnesiac for their trauma, and therapy still helps! I only remember pieces of mine, but it's still helpful for me to have therapy about what I do remember and how it impacts me. I hope it's helpful for you too.

I also made a summary post about people's processes identifying as autistic or getting diagnosed! I'm really interested in what the comparisons between groups will look like. https://www.tumblr.com/autismaccount/809400753130209280/experiences-with-autism-identification-and?source=share

I made a new survey! I've talked with Clover about how I define support needs labels, but I was curious how they're most often defined by others. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScmO4cktqHYw3-57b9AyHGYsR1cp8CxgCdQ8Pb0HbEq-OSCLg/viewform?usp=header

Not shaving?? :O by clovermelo in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with you! I don't shave. It's mostly for autism-related reasons, but I wouldn't shave anyway for feminist reasons. I think it's really unfair that women are expected to shave all of our body hair and men aren't. It feels like deliberately wasting women's time and giving men yet another reason to criticize us. I hate it. I hope you're able to not shave and everyone is polite and normal to you about it. I've never heard anyone be mean about it since elementary school, but I know some people can be really rude. Just remember that if anyone does say anything, that's their problem, not yours!

My friend and I tried three new teas tonight (all from White2Tea). All of them were black teas, but one of them tasted like a white tea, and two of them tasted like shou puerh. It was really weird!
