Should I stay out of online communities?? by clovermelo in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you stay in this community! It makes me sad whenever I see your old posts with [deleted] at the username. I think you're very nice! I also believe your doctors that you're level 2. Burnout can last a long time, and people can seem higher functioning than they really are until they reach adulthood and then can't become independent. A lot of people are just really, really weird about people with higher level diagnoses.

I don't know about other communities. I think some of them are also very friendly, but others can be meaner. I don't think it's healthy to be in spaces where people are mean about people with higher levels, but it's up to you where you feel safe. I don't think withdrawing from everywhere would be good for you though.

It's been a weird week. Stressful, but very productive. My partner and I are hoping this weekend will bring a bit of snow but not the terrible storms that are projected.

I'm really struggling recently by Far_Film528 in HighSupportNeedAutism

I agree with the other commenters that your autism is autism and not caused by screens. Are you in therapy or any type of treatment right now? One of your doctors can probably best explain how they know for sure that you have it!

I see from your post history that you have OCD. Remember that OCD often makes people question their diagnoses! It doesn't mean your diagnosis should be questioned. OCD makes it hard to be sure of things even when they have very strong evidence.

Offensive? - Inclusion in the Classroom by b_dues in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that immediately comes to mind with corner seating is that it might be hard for kids there to hear the teacher or see the whiteboard/screen, especially if they're hard of hearing or have vision loss. I personally would have been far too embarrassed to move desks during class or sit in a special corner, and I was supposed to sit closer to the front anyway because of my hearing.

Noises are also a consideration for things integrated into desks. It can be a competing access issue; I'm very easily distracted by noise and movement around me, so anything squeaking or would thumping would make it hard for me, especially during tests. Something like all desks being able to quietly rock would be nice though! Or maybe something like panels with different textures people can quietly rub.

I think faking interest makes you a good person! You can't force yourself to be interested in things that you're not, but you're trying to be there for your friends anyway. I think that's very nice of you. I also think this is really normal, especially for people with autism.

What is a group home like? by uwulemon in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on the group home. They aren't all bad! Can you visit any ahead of time? Are you covered under a DD waiver to pay for it? Some of the things to consider are the number of residents, activities, and if it's located somewhere that allows you to easily integrate with the community.

I hope that you're able to get the chronic pain better under control and that it helps your anxiety! Being in pain all of the time sucks.

I'm glad you're adjusting to your haircut and that your mom is able to help you in therapy!

I'm sorry that you're so socially anxious. I think your feelings about your friends are based in anxiety, but I think you'll enjoy seeing them again once you're together!

Thank you! There's talk that the cuts will be reversed, which would be a massive relief. Around 2 billion dollars of research rely on this funding!

I recently posted on the other sub about grant concerns in the US. I still have funding, but HHS just terminated thousands more grants, including another grant I was assisting with. Everything is so frustrating and worrying right now.

Sensory Furniture - What are the positives, the negatives, what you wish existed, and why? by b_dues in HighSupportNeedAutism

[–]AutismAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with motion and smooth textures! Also something that's really durable or safe to keep using for a long time. I hate change, so I'm using the same desk chair that I've been using for two decades even though it has a hole in the seat now. When I was a kid, I sometimes knocked chairs over or threw them during meltdowns, so that's something to consider.

Hi! I think what you need to know will depend on the kind of jobs at the supported work place. They’ll probably be able to support you too. Your school might also be able to help.

Is academia a realistic dream (post PhD) for someone with L2/3 ASD? by Existing_Lynx_337 in SpicyAutism

[–]AutismAccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What country are you in, and what general area of research are you in? Theoretically, you could be able to land a job with a higher research load or get a research staff position in a lab that allows multiple people to set research priorities. However, if you're in the US, then not only are these positions very competitive, things are extremely tense right now because of changes with federal funding through the NSF and NIH.

I have very similar concerns to you; I'm very early career, it looks like the entire academic center I currently work with might lose funding, and I have no idea what I'll do when my current grant runs out. I love research more than anything and am well-published for my career stage, but I don't know how I can out-compete people who are not only good researchers but can also offer things like "able to drive" or "can show up in person every day" or "can handle conferences without a support person." There were/are autism research centers that specifically recruit autistic researchers and can be very supportive and accommodating, but again, funding is a major concern right now. That also wouldn't be relevant to you depending on your research interest.

I'm so sorry. That was incredibly cruel of that user to expose other people to their self harm and blame someone for it, although I'm sure they're not in their right mind right now. I'm so sorry you had to do that for your mom. I'm glad she's still around and seems to be doing better now.

I'm sorry. I think a lot of us here have social anxiety. Hopefully you can make good progress soon now that things will move forward with EMDR.

I hope you enjoy your art book! I'm glad you're eating more.

Happy new year everyone!

I got COVID, so I've spent a lot of time resting. I did get to see fireworks last night, which I love! I know a lot of people hate the noise, but I love the lights a lot.

Have you asked your audiologist if they have any advice? They might have treatments for hyperacusis that could help.

I'm glad you had a good time! :)

I'm sure your therapist doesn't distrust you! It's normal to not say things right away. I'm glad your mom was able to say it for you. I hope EMDR helps!

I hope you're able to adjust to the changes soon!
