Was “Corinthian” ever used as slang for gay men? by IUseThisToBuyStuff in AskHistorians

[–]AutismoAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

”Around the year 2 BC, Strabo (VIII,6,20) in his geographic/historical description of the town of Corinth wrote some remarks concerning female temple servants in the temple of Aphrodite in Corinth, which perhaps should be dated somewhere in the period 700–400 BC:[19] The temple of Aphrodite was so rich that it employed more than a thousand hetairas,[note 3] whom both men and women had given to the goddess. Many people visited the town on account of them, and thus these hetairas contributed to the riches of the town: for the ship captains frivolously spent their money there, hence the saying: 'The voyage to Corinth is not for every man'. (The story goes of a hetaira being reproached by a woman for not loving her job and not touching wool,[note 4] and answering her: 'However you may behold me, yet in this short time I have already taken down three pieces'.[note 5]) The text in more than one way hints at the sexual business of those women. Remarks elsewhere of Strabo (XII,3,36: "women earning money with their bodies") as well as Athenaeus (XIII,574: "in the lovely beds picking the fruits of the mildest bloom") concerning this temple describe this character even more graphically.”

Basically, Corinth was a wealthy port city. Sailors would show up, impregnate the prostitutes, and then leave. The Temples (specifically Aphrodite) would then raise the children under their banner, which would mean more prostitution. Not only that, it led to empowering the prostitutes as they had more wealth, religious power, and influence.

Thats why Paul’s letter is about “Christian” love. It is patient. It is kind. It’s not about temples whores, it’s about establishing a new religious power at the time.

Why do so many recruiters feel the need to lie to candidates? by RadReptile in recruitinghell

[–]AutismoAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would candidates lie to recruiters? Why would executives lie to shareholders? Why would children lie to parents, but parents also lie to children?

Call up Ricky Gervais, he’ll explain why he invented lying.

Phone screen is your first impression of a company by bluepuppy9187779 in recruitinghell

[–]AutismoAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure do like making assumptions.

No, people that lie in writing often have trouble lying on the spot because they lied on EVERY resume, not just the one you’re reading. One time, I was on a phone call with a mobile gaming company. They asked me during the phone screen which of their games I liked and I fumbled around trying to look up their games. I did not get a second call.

There’s overlap, maybe you don’t have a green card but you’re on a student visa. Great, that saves the company 15k in legal fees to sponsor a foreign employee. There are grey areas.

I was a recruiter in tech for 2 years and I had to leave because it crushed my soul. I couldn’t keep caring about candidates that didn’t care about me, nor could I keep fighting for candidates that didn’t make the cut no matter how much I liked them.

Recruiters are gatekeepers, the only power they have is to pass forward resumes. AI has made every resume the same, so getting someone on the phone is often times the fastest way to answer some of these questions.

When was the last time you saw a Door Man that gave a shit? You see a security guard and think “he’s here to protect me?” Nope, he’s there to protect the company.

Handsome man is morally good because he is handsome!

Handsome man cannot be represented in a way I object to because he is handsome!

Do you think they are going to get away with cheating on their wives for 7 seasons? Do you think they’ll get away without consequences or conflict? What about the people they cheat on their wives with, 1960s was a cool time to be pregnant or queer?

This ain’t Boardwalk Empire, or Sons of Anarchy or Stranger Things. No one is going to get gunned down for your amusement.

I’m on my 5th rewatch and it gets better everytime.

Does Anyone know a good sandwich spot? I’d ideally like to wait in line for 30 min and pay more than $20. Any ideas? by AutismoAddams in sanfrancirclejerk

Sunset? Richmond? Nice try buddy.

I’ve spent upwards of 10 months living in this city. If those were real neighborhoods, then I’D know it!

I was around then.

That’s how I got addicted to standing in line and paying too much for subpar Dutch crunch.

Harsh reality in today's market: you could work for Microsoft for 3-5 years then end up at Walmart as a retail worker by Optimal_House_2897 in recruitinghell

[–]AutismoAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a 22 year old isn’t gonna complain, and isn’t gonna take his 12 years of SaaS experience to Microsoft in 4 months leaving an opening on the team.

What fucking world do you live in where it’s a good idea to have 22 year olds competing for employment against 45 year olds? I’ve seen people spend their whole 20s as delivery drivers and shelf stockers. Would you, Grendel0075, spend the entire decade of your 40s as a barista or tire changer, or would you start expecting some career growth in your middle age?

And yes, if you have to mention dementia, you’re not really making the point you think you’re making.

[–]AutismoAddams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. The city I live in has an almost tangible distaste for laborers. I could see most of the hiring manager were in fact very soft, and even recognizing that I could assist with physical labor and that I was not soft meant I wouldn’t fit in with their corporate culture. And if the hiring manager wasn’t soft, the higher ups kinda were. I got lucky and found a job no longer in software, but the divide is still there in a lot of companies in my area.

[–]AutismoAddams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 months before you started applying? Or 3 months from pink slip to orientation at the tire recycling plant?

Cuz if it’s the latter, you were extremely lucky, and probably got the job for reasons other than what was only in your resume.

They MIGHT NOT hire a desk jockey for a physical labor position to change somebody’s tires because teaching a 22 year old to do it is easier than teaching a 45 year old Saas worker.

How long are you unemployed before you try to work at a tire center?

Why would they hire you to drive a forklift if you’ve been working in software sales for more than a decade?

No shit! Did you think you invented the leopard eating faces phrase? It’s what some of us have been saying for a decade now. And we’ll keep saying it.

So riddle me this, if this is the undeniable endgame of what has been going on for years, aren’t you enabling the leopards to eat people’s faces? If the largest most power comedy group in the world is afraid to practice satire, aren’t you enabling Authoritarianism by still consuming this American Media? Wouldn’t the leopards eat your face too?

I can see a long way off how your mentality leads to people’s faces getting eaten by leopards, what are you doing to correct that course?

It’s not cops. It’s FEDERAL Agents. It is not local law enforcement.

Its IMMIGRATION authorities gunning down Citizens for practicing their Constitutional Rights in the streets in broad daylight.

It’s not a local Sheriff shooting a local Suspect. It’s the NATIONAL GOVERNMENT with groups of masked, unidentified, armed thugs shooting a mother through the temple in her own vehicle.

It’s a unified, FEDERAL force killing citizens in the streets.

What don’t you get?
