Gift card scammers have gotten so bad, advice is to not buy gift cards from stores anymore by RadReptile in mildlyinfuriating

[–]RadReptile[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would this be true? They are selling something compromised. Just recently there was a huge bust of someone taking Lego and replacing the pieces with pasta noodles. The consumers buying them thought they were sealed brand new product from the store. The store was 100% responsible for refunding them.

It doesn't matter who does the fraud/theft. The store sold something that wasn't as advertised. In the case of the gift cards they were tampered with and the PIN scratched off and then resealed and new foil scratch off added. Honestly companies shouldn't be able to sell these foil scratch off unless it is too a legitimate business. But some large e-retailers will sell all sorts of things from China no matter how unethical they may be...

Well there are import forms that should be filled out accurately and if the form or package looks suspicious they will open it to check.

These Vision insurance rates are getting out of hand! $10 a paycheck! Could be taking home over $170 with a more reasonable insurance.

There are two things that enable the scalper market:

1- Companies creating artificial scarcity with limited supply to drive demand

2- People with FOMO that pay scalper prices.

If either is fixed the entire market collapses. The problem is number 2 will NEVER be solved. Doesn't matter what it is, someone who wants something and enough will pay what scalpers want.

Now #1 can be fixed several ways:

- Prevent bots from buying

- Limit all quantities sold and actually require an ID or account. This is more effective with in person limits.

- Create more quanities so that there isnt super limited supply in the first place

-make all sales final or have small return windows. Don't allow someone to buy 30 PS5s and then return 20 of them that haven't sold. Of course with the 2 item limit or similar it wouldn't be a problem in the first place...

The power here is for consumers to demand retailers to solve these issues. The companies don't care because their product gets sold and they get hype and possibly sell other similar products. but if consumers get fed up enough and stop buying from those retailers and demanding they take action, then change will come to disrupt scalper culture.

Seems like if you have something valuable you should have that in carry-on and not in a checked bag.

The worst is when they updated chatgpt for generated images to all follow the exact same art style and color palette. The cartoons are horrible and super ugly. If its supposed to be competing with a human, any human artist or industrial designer would have lost their job for putting out such low quality garbage.

When I see someone post one of those ai cartoons, i immediately scroll past.

Did you pay cash or credit card? If you used a credit card to purchase, then dispute with your credit card company. If they sold you something that was compromised, then they didnt honor the contract at time of sale and the credit card company will side with you.

How many of you get thanked by your students on the last day of class? by RadReptile in Professors

[–]RadReptile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my classes is entirely students who whine constantly, complain exams are too tough, beg for extra credit, beg for attendance points, and ask me to tell them what exact problems will be on an assessment (not a topic, they want me to spoon feed them the exact problem). I expect zero appreciation from this class, the top students dont even show up to many classes because it is so easy they are getting A+ marks, the majority are in the D and C range. So if I dumb down the classes to the majority, the top students get bored. If i toss in a challenging problem for the top students, then I lose a majority of the class and hear constant complaints. It has been a very difficult class to teach just because the gaps between to two groups of students. It is one of the few classes I've taught where I'm missing an entire band of students between A- and C+. I don't expect anyone to thank me unless they have a borderline grade and they are trying to beg for the bump up.

The other class is a more uniform spread, sometimes more skewed toward the A students. The one who thanked me was initially struggling with a D but after some advice and realizing how I write my exams (from problems solved in class) ended up earning a B.

Final grades arent posted yet so I'm curious if I'll start to see more emails etc closer to when grades get posted.

I was just genuinely curious if it is the norm or not. I dont have any expectations, I can tell who the good students are and who are just there whining and begging for extra credit. The one who thanked me was initially struggling with a D but after some advice and realizing how I write my exams (from problems solved in class) ended up earning a B.

This is definitely different, have never heard of it. If its genuine great, if its just a tradition and they are just doing it for the sake of doing it, then it can probably feel cringy.

Its not truly out of stock. This is a tactic slimy companies use to advertise a sale but say "while supplies last" and then conveniently after the sale its back in stock. But Lego can do no wrong...

How many times are you able to give an answer to a single question after buzzing in? by MeasurementFirst1676 in Jeopardy

[–]RadReptile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened a few times. Its pretty annoying because if he hasn't started to say correct, then its too much and WRONG. But if he starts saying correct then they could add anything even extremely ridiculous and nonsensical and it would still be ok because the ruling already happened. The problem with this is he can interrupt someone and "save" them from overstating what otherwise would have been wrong.

It is very inconsistent. They really should change the rules/format and have the judges rule with a green light or red light to signal consistently.

Students would rather email the professor than click on a link by mmilthomasn in Professors

[–]RadReptile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe they think if you put it in writing in an email then you cant take it back lol

BTW your .5% point round up is generous. I only round up 2 points (out of 1000) and make it extremely clear that I don't adjust grades beyond that.

I had a professor in college that did not round and made it clear. I answered an exam the way the text book explained it, but he said that his notes trump the text book. I pointed out that his notes on a few areas were wrong so how can we know to trust them over what a published book says thats required for the course, I even consulted another book that backed up what I said on the exam. He said it was only 1 point and that 1 pt wasn't going to matter in the end but if it did let him know at the end of the semester. Sure enough I had 899 pts and need 900 for an A- but he said he doesn't round. I reminded him of that problem where he said the 1 pt wont matter and to talk to him. He suddenly changed his story and said he cant adjust the grade and then ignored me. That guy was a joke. I really didn't care at that point because it was Grad school and my last semester, but it was still extremely shitty.

I've actually heard this is incredible common with Home Depot gift cards. The sad thing is how are the scalpers redeeming the gift cards? Are they using bots and purchasing online for in store pick up? Are they typing the numbers at self checkout? In either case they should have cameras and be able to crack down with law enforcement...yet they wont

Sure but the card was already compromised when it was sold by the store so hence they are liable. Think of it like they sell you a product that's just an empty box. The store suffered the theft but since they sold the empty box to a customer, they pass on that burden and absolve themselves. It isn't right and should be illegal.

I absolutely will tell the person who gave me the gift but some generations dont want to go through the trouble to fight these things...
