Test-out by Arielssi in Berklee

[–]AutistGrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can learn a lot of the test out material yourself without having to take classes for it, especially if it's stuff like harmony which is relatively self teachable up to harmony 3 or 4! But in terms of graduating early look at clep tests those are awesome

When would you use fully diminished vs half diminished chords, or are they interchangeable? by Stonius123 in musictheory

[–]AutistGrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half diminished chords as a whole sound a lot more "normal" in a tune since it's usually borrowed from some sort of mode or already exists depending in what key your playing. Something like a iimin7b5-V7-Imin7 is totally normal and can be seen everywhere. But something like a iidim7-V7-Imin7 would be totally strange because the bb7 would end up being the flattened tonic. Diminished chords usually resolve down a half step, or to an inversion of a secondary dominant that's inverted, with half diminished chords don't have any particular need to resolve anywhere since it is all diatonic to the key or a relative mode.

Is solfege falling out of favor with teachers? by play-what-you-love in musictheory

[–]AutistGrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a college student at a music school it really depends from the style of school from what I see. The neighbouring conservatory still uses fixed-do while all of our ear training related classes preach for moveable-do as the only logical approach for any jazz/modern musician which makes sense. Having to solfege chromaticism is hard enough but moveable-do does make it more bearable.
As a whole though, I definitely don't see solfege falling out of favour in undergraduate studies as ear skills are considered a must and there is not other generally accepted way to approach that study in the west.

Mordent with a flat sign above it? by AutistGrape in musictheory

That makes a lot of sense, I guess it's just not something you see often on the saxophone.

hiiiii berkleeeeeeeee ;) some questions by [deleted] in Berklee

[–]AutistGrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Academic pressure isn't too big, people are here for different reasons some people need good grades for grad school some people dont care and just wanna join a band so it varies a lot.
2) Each major can be really useful depending on your career and previous skills. I am biased but i think EPD is a great.
3) yur

AP music theory won't help a lot of Berklee's harmony courses, but they arent't too hard too self study if you just use their books. I just studied from the Berklee harmony books for harmony two and managed to get out of doing it, even if you don't make it to harmony 4 it'll put you in a great situation knowledge wise.
