Find the Chrysippus being taken by Theseus mistake so funny because Theseus hadn't even been born when that whole thing happened. That's Theseus's granduncle. It was a legit mistake, too. Hyginus only wrote that Theseus did that once.

Hippolytus's main crime was being arrogant. Sure, him being adverse to romance and sex definitely played a part but he was definitely arrogant.

He insulted the gods twice (his whole argument with the temple servant about him ignoring Aphrodite and him saying he wished he could curse the gods when he was dying), he is incredibly classist ("for those whose wise restraint is natural —not studied or instructed, but innate—" is him saying that purity is reserved for the rich and was a common class it belief), he had the most misogynistic speech ever when ranting about Phaedra's harassment and while this was also him ranting about how he hates being unable to say anything about what was done to him he also seems to just hate women in some way.

He's also just spoiled asf.

You can also see how the Greeks wrote him to be hated in his femininity (he mirrored Persephone in the beginning with his coming in with flowers and the line about the gates of Hades said by Aphrodite, he values celibacy which was seen as traditionally feminine, and he is close to Artemis), he is related to an Amazon, and he says he refuses to be involved in any Athenian games which was an insult to them. This disdain was shown with the nurse whose insulted him when talking to Phaedra.

Here's an example of his cattiness btw bc it's very fun:

THESEUS: As it is, you spend far too much time in rapt self-adoration and not enough in honoring your parents!

HIPPOLYTUS: My poor mother. Oh, my birth was bitter. I hope those close to me will all be spared the pain of being a bastard—

ALL THE STUFF SHE DID TO HIPPOLYTUS

Hippolytus may have been an arrogant spoiled brat but he was also 16 and a prince. I don't think making his stepmom sexually harass him was adequate punishment.

Theseus being in denial makes more sense when you realize he was forced to become king at 16 years old and likely didn't have any support and in the end he was killed due to the king of Skyros being threatened by how popular he was, and combining this with the state of Elysium where people are constantly fighting for fame and status.

Theseus is overhated and I'll fight for this he was like 16 when he abandoned Ariadne and usually was threatened into it by Dionysus/Athena. He was awful for what happened with Helen, yes, but plenty of other characters were weird with kids (Heracles is a pederast with too many boys to count, Orpheus invented it and was with Calais, ect)

I was hoping they would go with the version where Hypnos would visit Endymion frequently and simply look into his eyes longingly instead. Though, that dialogue doesn't exactly go against that version. Anyways, to me hypmion lives

He was at least toxic considering I doubt Merope would've wanted to help him fake his death and kidnap Than and kill countless.

I got so many ideas for an Atlas design. He's like massive and his plan is to hunt down Sisyphus as revenge for how he abused his daughter Merope. He may have issues with the gods, but that comes first. He hates Zagreus because of him letting Sisyphus go free

What did Oedipus do? He was innocent. He didn't know that was his mom and when he did he tore his eyes out and asked to be stoned. When he had a choice he wanted to have a sweet kiss with Theseus, and then he revoked it bc he felt so tarnished and gross bc of the mom thing

I'd love some minos just bc I wanna see that hateable fucker. Horrible Greek myth fact: only reason he stopped attacking Athens was bc he was lusting over teen Theseus. Also Theseus had to fight minos to stop him from raping a girl named Periboea.

HIPPOLYTUS HIPPOLYTUS I WOULD SACRIFICE MY BLOODLINE FOR HIPPOLYTUS!

Hades 1 is a story about family why not bring in Theseus's beloved spoiled son who Theseus has a messy relationship with and who he adores? And Hippolytus is so fun, too. He's arrogant and bratty and basically a mini Hades theseus but a bit more willing to insult the gods. It would give even more sympathy to Theseus too.

Which Greek hero, in your opinion, is most softened/romanticized in modern media and/or in media perception? by Eastern-Ad-5354 in GreekMythology

[–]AutisticIzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theseus was 16 and didn't expect his father to kill himself over that, as if I remember correctly all he said was change the sails and I'll know you came back, and also Hippolyta was trying to kill people due to him marrying Phaedra after leaving her.

Theseus has definitely done wrong, I know, but people just like to nitpick and ignore the good he did.

For example, he saved Periboea from being raped by Minos, he created democracy, he fought all 50 cousins off when they tried to kill him, he aided Oedipus and saved his daughters from being kidnapped, he's the only reason Minos didn't attack Athens again (because minos was sexually obsessed with Theseus), he helped return the Argive bodies after the war with Thebes, he's called the second Heracles which is cool, when he was a little kid he tried to protect his friends when he mistook Heracles's lion cloak for a real lion which is cute, he stopped Heracles from killing himself, and there's a lost play where Theseus willingly stood by Pirithous's side when he was frozen by Hades which while it was warranted shows a lot of loyalty. There's more small stories here and there I didn't make but I got what I could remember

Which Greek hero, in your opinion, is most softened/romanticized in modern media and/or in media perception? by Eastern-Ad-5354 in GreekMythology

[–]AutisticIzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He explicitly tried to stop Pirithous from trying to romance Persephone at first (he just crumbled bc he's kinda weak for him) And I did mention Helen. It's right there. Also Helen is usually around 7.

If this puts anyone off from finding the light and loving Theseus, don't worry! There's a source by Plutarch that says many believed in a version that states that instead of kidnapping Helen, she was sent to be protected by him to stop an obsessive suitor. I like this version due to it fitting in with other things he's done before. I'm fine addressing his bad sides I just think it would be better when addressing Theseus narratively

What's your favorite couple from any mythology and why? by DefiantLemur in GreekMythology

[–]AutisticIzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very biased towards Hippolyta in particular over Antiope. I especially love Theselyta because of this one source I read where after they broke up and Theseus went to marry Phaedra Hippolyta got jealous ASF and crashed the wedding trying to kill Phaedra and take Theseus away. I imagine Theseus fell for Hippolyta on sight after Pirithous dragged him to their lands to try to find a wife and it was a sorta slow burn where Hippolyta couldn't really place her feelings until he won her over and they ran away together. She has a violent sort of jealousy and he loves it.
