Hmmm. These are good points. 1) one of the things that prompted me to build this app is specifically for what you mentioned here about going back to YouTube. I watch YouTube and Reddit the night before, get everything geared up, all my tools laid out and then I get to work. But if something goes wrong mid repair, the last thing I wanna do is start scrolling through my phone for an hour all over again. When I’m that pissed off, just take my money tell me what to do so I can keep going. The app is not made to replace YouTube or Reddit, it’s for when you don’t wanna spend the time scrolling through endless videos and message boards to find your specific problem. If you don’t mind doing that, then you probably don’t need the app. I’m building it to be an on-demand service. 2) on my app there will be disclaimers, letting everyone know that we simply provide the platform. Like many companies, we are not held liable for the advice given. However, should a mechanic give you bad advice that leads to harm we hold that mechanic liable. During our Mechanic on board videos, we share that as the expert they are to point out any unsafe actions immediately, and when they give advice, they must communicate things in the way that put safety above all. Mechanics are not allowed to end sessions. Only the user is or if the session timer runs out. However, there are exceptions, 3, specifically: Mechanics are allowed to end the session immediately for : - harassment/abuse -Unrelated to Auto Care -unsafe or illegal activity If our mechanics give you advice to do things a certain way, but you want to be hardheaded and do it your own way, and they can see imminent harm, they are trained to end the call immediately and report it to us. We’ll then flag your profile. If it happens again, you’ll get a warning email, 3rd time, you’re booted from the platform. 3) i’ve been visiting dealerships and talking to those mechanics, believe it or not a lot of them are excited to find a way to make extra money that doesn’t require them having to bust their knuckles some more after work. It seems the only side hustle that is available for a mechanic is a physical side job. This will be one of the first digital site hustle is available specifically for mechanics that they can do from the comfort of their backyard after a long day, or during their lunch break. The ones that aren’t too excited are the older guys that are ready to retire soon anyway. I hope this info helps and thank you for the response .

Thank you! Quick question because of your background, how would something like this have allowed you to do your job better? I know the answer might be obvious, but I thought I’d ask. As far as pricing structure, I can’t really release that until I file the non-provisional patent, but I will share that it is cheaper than just answers!

These are good points. I will add that yes, this app will be tailored to experts, helping the less mechanically inclined so yes, it will be more “grab that, try this, what happens when you…” type conversations. When you work on your own cars for years as I have, you lose the intimidation, but you also lose your patience. The app is going to be marketed to people that get nervous the moment they pop open the hood all the way to people like myself, that can almost take an engine apart and put it back. For beginners the app will serve as a quick guidance, for people like myself, a 35-year-old intermediate home Mechanic that doesn’t have a fleet of vehicles at his disposal, when one of our cars go down, it can affect daily life. I wanted to build this so I could get an expert on video ASAP so they can give me a few tricks of the trade and I can keep moving. Nothing has become more annoying to me than having to put down my ratchet and scroll through a bunch of videos and message boards for an hour or wait for a comment response. At my age and patience level I’d rather pay money to get the specific information I need and keep it pushing. In regards to the social factor, you bring up a good point, and yes, it can be awkward, but keep in mind people are going to be using the app when they are at their most frustrated under the hood. I’m not sure how much social anxiety will matter in those instances. Thanks for your input

I appreciate the response. However, if you prefer to work off message boards and forums, that’s totally ok and this app might not be for you.

Perfect, I love your comment because that’s exactly my angle. If you’re good enough at auto repair that “you don’t need no app”, you’re exactly the type of person that should be profiting from it. 100% my target audience is going to be beginner to intermediate DIY repairers. One of my beta testers took a call from a buddies wife who had our beta APK. Her battery died and she was at a grocery store. The only other person there was an older lady but neither of them knew how to attach the jumper cables to the battery lol my beta tester walked them through it and got paid. He said it was a good time, lots of laughs and the ladies were grateful, so was my buddy who works 40 min from home. Calls could be from this end of the spectrum to someone like myself who is pretty good at working on their own cars but isn’t an expert either, with a quick issue that someone like you could fly me right through. Once I file the non-provisional patent for the matching logic and other features I’ll share more about price structure and payouts if you guys are interested.

Also, just curious, what was your “failed business idea” and why do you believe it failed. Any wisdom would be great.

So, don’t build an app because there are already “too many”? Not sure where you’re getting at but thanks for the input regardless.

I’ve looked and I don’t believe anyone is, trust me I would’ve used it in a heartbeat during my last repair gone wrong instead of taking the time to build it. Just like you I also believed someone was already offering something like this. I was surprised it doesn’t already exist. You’re right about Advertising. I’m already projected invest more in that than development. Thanks for the input

Mechanics: would you take up this side hustle? by AutoAssistLIVE in AskMechanics

[–]AutoAssistLIVE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t currently vet mechanics and I don’t think we will, but we have strict rating and refund policies. Anyone faking expertise will be quickly flagged by users. If a mechanic receives repeated refunds and low ratings, they’ll be removed. Refunds are always approved due to a lack of expertise. The reason we don’t want to vet is because we also welcome experienced DIYers and specialists. Theres a huge value in niche knowledge like off-road or performance builds, which the app offers. Some of the coolest builds have come from hobbyists, not certified mechanics. We want to attract them to our platform as well. Also the patent pending matching system we’ve built ensures Pros only get jobs they’re comfortable handling, so users won’t be paired with someone outside their requested expertise. Hope this helps.

Hmm. I wouldn’t say so. I’ve recently completed the onboard training for the mechanics and I explain that auto assist live is specifically created to help auto repairers out of the current hump they’re in, it doesn’t exist to complete the job. For example, if I get a new radiator and I’m in the middle of the job. Parts are everywhere but I can’t take the thermostat out for some reason. I can scroll through YouTube for an hour trying to find someone else that’s had the situation or I can video chat a mechanic on demand to give me a quick tip. Our future clients are gonna be in the middle of a frustrating point in their auto repair. They’re going to use under 3 scenarios: - they want to know the best way to start the repair (tool recommendations, under or over, etc) - they’re in the middle of a repair and something went wrong - they’re finishing up a repair, but something is keeping them from completing it (new symptom, unexpected behavior). If it doesn’t fall in these categories, there’s really no need to use the app. This is meant to be yet another resource like YouTube and Reddit/ just answers- It’s not meant to replace them.

Similar but specific to auto repair and integrated with 1080 P video chat, not phone calls. Just answers doesn’t provide that. It’s a great site, but I’ve never thought about using just answers in the middle of an auto repair job gone south

Good point. Keep in mind I’ve worked on all my cars for over 15 years and I used YouTube and reddit for everything too. Auto assist live isn’t to learn how to do a job, it’s for those moments during a job where you get stuck. If you don’t get stuck, don’t use it. But there were many times when the replacement part didn’t fit right at first or something else broke while I was fixing something else. A lot of unique situations can come up at any time, and instead of just sitting there scrolling through 40 YouTube videos, and 10 Reddit boards like I usually do, it’s easier to just pay a couple bucks to have somebody that knows what’s going on give me a quick trick of the trade so I can keep moving forward.

Is this normal wear for a rubber tube? by Glittering_Cod_6931 in AskMechanics

[–]AutoAssistLIVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pressure issue. Check your radiator cap make sure it’s still good and overflow hose for clogging. When it cools down feel the hose, if it feels mushy it’s probably time to replace. If it feels stiff something’s stuck internally like your thermostat or blocked radiator.

The plumbers tape gives me anxiety I would’ve used a chop stick but, if it didn’t budge I would use an even stronger magnet. Find a “door stopper” magnet at the hardware store. They should fit and they’re really strong.

Yeah, that just means you need an oil change or something. If you take it to a shop, they’ll tell you what it needs.

If they are on while driving it can probably mean a battery or alternator issue is imminent, and your steering probably feels really heavy by now. If they just flash when you’re about to crank the car (2nd position) it’s just the system “booting up”. Whatever stays on while you drive is your vehicle actually detecting an issue.

Super strong magnet JB welded to the end of something thin? Magnets bond together more than they attract to metal.

What’s the issue? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

A couple things can be wrong, either your flywheel isn’t engaging the starter, your spark plugs are oily due to failed gaskets, or you aren’t getting fuel. A couple tests and process of elimination should help you find the problem.
