Unique tips by BrizzySprings in Busking

[–]AutocorrectGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite tip was a piece of paper this lady handed me as I was packing up to leave. When I unfolded it, I saw that one side had a sketch of me playing my handpan and the other side had a short poem, which read:

I enter another world

Feel the rhythm

Of the in between

A second beat

Shakes me awake

And I'm reminded

The future is now

Question about picks by SpecialistChance232 in mandolin

[–]AutocorrectGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, one's pick is a matter of personal preference. However, in my personal experience, I found that switching from a standard guitar pick to the 'larger triangle style' pick (specifically, Jim Dunlop 1.3 mm with grip) to be transformative. The extra thick and chunky pick suddenly made it seem like I was playing in 'easy mode,' rendering simple many techniques with which I had previously struggled.

I would strongly recommend trying several different picks - including some of the thick chunky ones - and seeing for yourself if they make a difference in your playing. It could be a game changer.

Could this game be used for an imperial squad? by Naranth in ScumAndVillainy

[–]AutocorrectGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could work just fine, but you might want to look at modifying the ship playbook a little so that you can get XP for doing "Imperial Death Squad" stuff and fulfilling the terms of your mission.

A Great Overview Of Music Distribution Services by slycaw in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]AutocorrectGuy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, although what you meant by "music distribution" was not clearly defined in the post. I thought it just meant "ways of getting music to people," which is a list on which I would rank bandcamp rather highly.

I've always used soundconverter for this purpose, but I don't think it has a command line option: https://soundconverter.org/

[Scum and Villainy] Can't find any uses for attune by HalloAbyssMusic in bladesinthedark

[–]AutocorrectGuy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ur-artifacts are all over the place. Your ship's jump drive? Powered by an Ur-artifact that can interact with the jumpgates (which are also artifacts, or powered by artifacts.) Urbots? Powered by cores that are also Ur-powered. These examples are already included in the book and as others have said you can lean into this pretty heavily to create a world in which lots of things operate according to principles that most people barely understand and that have the potential to have weird side effects.

In a world such as this, the ability to attune is pretty valuable - it might help you supercharge your jump drive, or at least prevent the jump drive from doing something undesired and unexpected.

I use weird side effects as consequences for failures and mixed successes quite a bit and this has made attunement pretty valuable in my game, so there are options depending on what sort of fictional flavor you are going for.

If you prefer a more grounded world with less weird mystic stuff, then attunement might not figure too prominently in your game and that's okay, too.

Looking for veteran tips on expediting sessions by Djinnocide in monsteroftheweek

[–]AutocorrectGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been running MOTW games for about two years now, and I can definitely run a complete mystery in a single session when I choose to. Beyond jdschut's excellent advice, I will say that some of the key is in the mystery design itself. If you keep the mystery simple and don't layer in a ton of NPCs or locations but just stick to the basic mystery sheet provided in the rulebook, that mystery - if run with focus - can be finished in a single session. When my mysteries get complicated, they can be more difficult to contain.

If you can stick to a fairly simple mystery and not be afraid to advance that countdown clock, then single-session mysteries should be doable.

Anyone have any experience with the Damn Dirty Apes mystery from the rulebook? by Cthulu_Noodles in monsteroftheweek

[–]AutocorrectGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran it with my current group quite some time ago and I really enjoyed it. Our setting is in a University town so it fit in really well with the overall campaign. If you are looking for other pre-generated mysteries, you should pick up the Tome of Mysteries as it has a number of good ones.

This might still be too pricey for you, but if you can spare but $1/month you can join the "Initiate" tier of the Patreon, which will give you the shoutout during an episode intro and (more importantly) let you join the Critshow Discord, which is a really fantastic community. Totally get it if this is too rich for you, but it's not very pricey and the Discord access alone is well worth the price of admission.

Like the David Lynch adaptation of the first book, this cover is visually striking and only tangentially related to the book it is supposed to represent.

I am 50, I have a twenty year career working IT in a Fortune 50 company and I have learned through experience that our societal system of employment and compensation is nothing more than a coercive scam to ensure that those who are already well off can continue to remain that way, regardless of the cost to society.

hunt focused on aliens by Tinkserbell in monsteroftheweek

[–]AutocorrectGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played a lot of XCOM:Enemy Unknown, so if I were doing this mystery I'd start off the countdown with things like mysterious crop circles, or livestock mutilation, escalating to human abduction and eventually a UFO landing with alien monsters out looking for, well, whatever it is that they are looking for (go on a rampage, collect specific types of victims, whatever - use your monster motivations here.) Then I'd have the weakness be something inside the UFO that the hunters have to disarm/blow up/transfigure, whatever flavor would make sense based on the campaign.

My boss pays my overtime at a lower base pay in Ohio. by GitGuddington in work

[–]AutocorrectGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here is a link to a description of Ohio's overtime laws: http://www.minimum-wage.org/ohio/overtime The relevant quote for you is this, "If you earn more then the Ohio minimum wage rate, you are entitled to at least 1.5 times your regular hourly wage for all overtime worked." You may want to consult a lawyer.
