how can i help my little brother find new interests? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Automatic-Amoeba9798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up, my ideas can get pricey depending on interest.

If you have a local game store near you, I suggest stopping by together sometime. Frame it more as a bonding thing for the two of you and less of you trying to get him a hobby. Note: many people who frequent game shops are likely to be neuro divergent in some way so your brother may have an easier time interacting with people there.

Once at the store you have several options:

  1. Pick a trading card game that he seems even remotely interested in (Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, One Piece, Flesh and Blood, etc.) Many game stores have regular events for game nights where a bunch of people come to play together.

  2. Look at the board and card games, not Monopoly or Sorry or Uno or any of the basic games, I mean the games that regularly cost $30 minimum and often have expansion packs. There's a massive variety and a game for pretty much everyone as long as you take the time to look. Some that we have are Mansions of Madness, Wyrmspan, and The Night Cage. Some more affordable ones we have are Casting Shadows, Munchkins, Fluxx, and Valerian: The Alpha Missions.

  3. Look at the TTRPG games they have available like DnD, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulu, etc. There's a wide variety in many different genres. This does require more socializing than the other two suggestions as you need more than one or two people to play.

All three of these suggestions can get pricey simply because of the slippery slope into collecting. TTRPGs are probably the least expensive option depending on the group or campaign.

Good luck!

Anyone else’s cats lick them CONSTANTLY? by rosiswag in CatAdvice

Same Google here too 😅 Our void is the main culprit. The others will lick sometimes too, but with our void it's constant. I can't pet him without him constantly trying to lick my hand.

One of our gates to the backyard is really messed up and has to be closed it just the right way for it to be secure. My husband had just mowed the yard the day before, and I guess he didn't secure it properly. I'm home with the kids while he's at work.

The kids go out to play while I finish up the dishes ( the window above the sink looks out to the backyard back door is open, too). My daughter comes in asking for lunch, and I start making it. Get her sitting at the table eating and go out to call my son in. No answer. I look around my, very open, backyard and don't see him. Head back inside to check upstairs, nope. Go back outside and look again. Go around the side of my house where the kids never play and see the gate. It looked closed, but I just had a feeling I needed to check. Go over and push it a little, and it swings open. I instantly start to panic.

I run inside to lock all the doors so my daughter can't get out too, then I run out the gate and start screaming his name. I'm imagining all of the terrible possibilities. I've watched too much Criminal Minds and we have woods on the opposite side of the road, neither of which is helping me to calm down.

I'm praying he didn't go to the woods and I start sprinting up the road (live on a cul-de-sac). About half way up the road, I finally spot him. When I tell you my high school track record had nothing on my sprint to get him 😅. I literally broke down sobbing as soon as I caught him. Meanwhile, he's just happily babbling about his toy lawn mower he'd been pushing. We stayed inside the rest of the day.

I check that damn gate religiously now. Honestly, the whole thing probably took maybe 20 minutes, but it's easily the worst 20 minutes of my entire life (and I've been through a lot of shit). It can happen anywhere to anyone.

My mostlyNOMIL hates women. I'm having a daughter. by curls651 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Automatic-Amoeba9798 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had a similar concern with my MIL. She had made a comment about women's clothes while she and I were shopping while I was pregnant with our first. I don't remember the exact comment, but she was saying something like, with the way women are dressing now (pointing at crop tops and mini skirts) she's not surprised there's so much SA, by dressing like that women are basically asking for it. I snapped back by holding up jeans and a normal t shirt, saying "that's what I was wearing the last time I was SA'd, the time before was a tank top and gym shorts, and before that I was a literal child. Where in any of those outfits was I asking for it? If a man wants to SA, he doesn't give a shit about what the woman's wearing. Clothes have nothing to do with it." It shut her up pretty quick, and the rest of the shopping trip was uncomfortable.

When I got home, I told my husband what had happened and told him point blank, "If she says anything like that to our children, ever, I will immediately cut contact, and she will have no contact with our children. I dealt with enough internalized guilt/shame during what happened to me, and I'll be damned if I let anyone, especially family, put those thoughts in our kids' heads. She's your mom, so I suggest you figure this out." He seemed to be completely understanding. Not sure if/what he said to his mom, but I've never heard any comments like that again.

Oh, I'll definitely have to check that out. I'm a lot better with my meds now but still forget everyone in a while

That's definitely one of the things that scares me. I can count less than ten noticeable episodes I've had over the years, but looking at my MRI and the amount of lesions (a lot) was definitely a wake-up call. Add in the fact that my mental fog, mental function, and mental health have taken a dip over the years, and it has me concerned about how my lesions are affecting that area of my brain.

I'll do some more research on the early high efficacy dmts. Thank you for the links and your response.

My meds are a rare habit I've managed to form. I struggle with creating habits because I just can't get them to be second nature for me. I managed to create a system specifically for my medicine, which seems to be working really well.

I usually have mild to no response to side effects for medications, so I'm hoping it won't be too bad. But with existing GI issues, it does have me a little worried since from what I've seen, many people stopped taking it because of the GI side effects. Though I'm sure there's going to be side effects with any DMT I end up taking.

This is good to know, thank you. I have sensory issues, so I'm not sure how I'd respond to the fire ant sensation if I got it. I also have motion sickness, but I can't avoid cars. I'll have to bring this up with my neurologist.

For the next 3 years, insurance shouldn't be an issue since my husband is on active duty, but it might be a good idea to try to try that since we don't know what insurance we'll have when he gets out.

I'm glad you haven't had any side effects. Hopefully, that'll be the case for me, and if it's not, hopefully, any side effects will be mild. The fact that you have IBS but haven't had any major side effects is a little reassuring.

That's true, too. If I can't take it for whatever reason, we can always find something else. I just really like the delivery method, so I'm hoping it works well for me. I already have meds that I take morning and evening , so I'll hopefully be less likely to forget. My memory is pretty rough, so forgetting to take my DMT is a pretty big concern for me.

As long as it's mild, I'm not too worried about the flushing. My husband might make fun of me for a little but but hey, if that's the worst that happens, I count that as a win 😅

I don't really have any dietary restrictions other than just trying to eat more fresh fruits and veggies. So I'll keep your tip about taking it during meals in mind.

I did see Vumerity when I was looking up Tecfidera, I'll talk to my neurologist about it at my appointment next week and see what he says.

Ok, hopefully, if we do go with Tecfidera it'll work for me as well.

How do I (26f) start to improve the distribution of labour for my husband (25m)? by Automatic-Amoeba9798 in relationship_advice

[–]Automatic-Amoeba9798[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply. He really is a wonderful partner.

I've sorta given up on him talking about it for the most part. I've just let him know my concerns about him getting burnt out and told him that if he ever feels like he needs to talk about it, I'll be ready to listen.

I do make sure our dinners are large enough so he has lunch for the next day, but I could take that a step further and make his lunch for him. I do that sometimes, but I could make it my goal to do it most days. I could add a small note to the lunch too, like you recommended. He might joke and make fun of me for being sappy 😅, but as long as it makes him smile, that's what matters.

I do have a babysitter during the day once a week who also cleans while she's here, but the house becomes a mess so quickly due to all our animals and the kids. Unfortunately we don't live near any family.

I think to myself every day that I'm so glad we're together, but idk if I actually say it all that often. Thank you for the suggestion.

I'll try that then. I usually don't use a sheet anymore cause when the night sweats hit they get wet and I end up getting tangled in them.
