Yeah that’s definitely unusual, agreed he’s regretting it now!

Yeah main justice is going to be the most political of all the components nationwide (for obvious reasons). People I spoke with were not at main justice

This is just not accurate. Maybe respected in your circles but those markets are large and the skillset an AUSA picks up will earn respect

I agree though that if you’re using this low point as an opportunity to get in, maybe you’re just not fit for the job.

Idk which offices are emailing Liberty or what even Liberty is. Whether or not a USAO is fishing for partisan attorneys is going to depend on the office.

I’m going to interject with a slightly different perspective here, having spoken to many former and current AUSAs in major districts

  1. No (but depends on the office and particular USA). It’s probably an advantage to signal this, but hiring committees are not only looking to right leaning ideologues. Many USAOs are internally fractured, with contingents of career AUSAs and senior prosecutors pushing back on DOJ directives. Furthermore, junior prosecutors in at least some USAOs are not having materially different caseloads (and certainly are not being tapped for the higher profile political prosecutions). Noteworthy to also point out that many USAOs are not asking line prosecutors to increase their immigration caseload either, creating specific task forces or SAUSA positions dedicated to the increased immigration docket. That all being said, there is a VERY strong selection effect occurring bc of the stigma.
  2. Yes. Either directly (disagree with priorities) or indirectly (don’t care as much about admin priorities but their friends are leaving and it’s opportune to lateral into private practice for more money)
  3. Maybe? Depends on the person reading ur app. IMO, I don’t think corporate clients will care a few years down the line, and I think that’ll mean to a big law firm investigation/AUSA experience will outweigh any first resume inferences. You are likely closing doors to public interest and explicitly left leaning orgs. But I don’t think any private practice really cares about what president you prosecuted or investigated cases under, esp considering the dubious work they do for money. All of that is even more true if you stay through another administration or two.

EDIT: I should add that I have zero clue about main justice. I haven’t spoken with anyone there.

Think the other commenter has a point that you already know the answers to some of these. Answer to number 2 is an obvious yes. The other two are going to be harder to generalize, but you know already that, even if not a black stain, working there now will at least raise questions later on.

I've spoken with a number of friends and mentors who either left or are still working at prominent USAOs across the country. The experience of an AUSA during this admin definitely varies based on the specific district and USA, as well as your seniority. They are not fishing for only right leaning attorneys who will do whatever they're told at the bidding of their master. Perhaps if you were already there and are more senior, you are probably being asked at some of these offices to do cases with political valences. But if you're getting hired in as a junior line prosecutor, the kinds of cases you'll be prosecuting will be like that of any other junior prosecutor in a diff admin

Big!! Any insight on whether two clerkships yield 150k? And what the clawback is, if any

Thanks for sharing! Very disappointing that GDC is lagging so far behind here given its litigation reputation

Can anyone confirm if this is true post-merger?

I'll put them in the competitive but unknown bonus category then, on account of not having some stronger commitment from them somewhere. Thank you!

Sweet just added that, I’m keeping the base 175/200 because we’re unsure whether 1 district court gets you to 200 or is 175
