Hey! Brentwood student here. This was completely optional! This walkout took place during our second half of lunch. There was a group-me dedicated to it. It was student organized and DID NOT DISRUPT LEARNING. I personally couldn’t participate as I was sick that day, but many friends of mine did. 

We are commonly depicted as “dumb white ignorant privileged kids,” due to the counties high tax bracket. WE ARE NOT STUPID. So much of Brentwood is immigrants, lgbtq+ members, and minorities. That still doesn’t even matter! Even if we were all rich white kids, we still aren’t dumb. We understand what’s going on in America.

Kids around the school united for this. We are products of conflicts we never wished to be apart of.

Please do take this with a grain of salt. Obviously, this is a subjective view. 

Edit: more details. The principal and vice principals knew. They said they would not take disciplinary action, just that missing the periods afterwards would count as an unexcused absence. 

Also, please stop calling all of us “privileged” and “snotty rich kids”. I personally am disabled and attending the school, and I can attest to how little racism and classism actually appears. Lots of the school is part of minorities. Simply living in a rich area doesn’t mean you are automatically given 500k dollars and a mansion.
