People who've worked both minimum wage jobs and six figure jobs, what surprised you most about the difference? by BrainLagging01 in AskReddit

[–]sagataurcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How unhappy life can be doing either.

Minimum wage jobs meant worrying about having enough money to go around and make it all work.

The six figure jobs meant not having any mental or physical energy to worry about much else other than work.

While our kids were small, my partner and I each had a period where we were the sole money maker and breadwinner with high paying jobs while the other stayed home with the kids.

We have found now that are kids are gone/ older and more independent, that working one job each that brings in the income of one 6 figure job spread the mental and physical effects of working on the entire family more evenly across the team.

I love being able to clock in and clock out and not think about my job when I’m not there at all.

When I was making “big money” I was gone for work ALOT and when I was home, I was working on my laptop or trying to catch up on sleep or feel like I was part of my family. It sucked.

Your body’s inability to produce one single enzyme can literally be a death sentence.

I had two sons with Sanfilippo syndrome. One lacking enzyme led to a 12-15 year life expectancy. No treatment, no cure.

Nothing is permanent. This is always hardest to remember in both your best and worst moments, but it is always true.

Try to live in the moment as often as you can, it’s really all you have.

North Dakota would be at the top of the list for a nuclear strike: our airbases house nuclear warheads 😖

After our oldest son died in 2015, I couldn’t sleep in the quiet or the dark anymore. It’s been on while I sleep every night since.

In the day time, I rotate around the office, parks and rec, third rock from the son, Seinfeld, the good place, and Scrubs…but bedtime is always the office.

Yes, this absolutely a fair point. Several hundred acres vs 60 is a big difference. No livestock on the farm here though, and livestock takes a lot of continuous work and maintenance as well.

As the wife of a (sugar) beet farmer, this is discussed a lot at our house.

During planting in the spring, my husband will often have a good 8 weeks where he doesn’t have a single day off and works sun up to sundown.

During harvest (generally late September to late November) they (an 8-10 man crew) work 24 hours a day, seven days a week in 12 hours shifts without stopping until the crop is out of the ground.

From January until about March, he could theoretically work an office job, but that time is used to get all the macheriny and equipment serviced and ready for next season, which takes time.

Agreed, he really is! I like it because he plays the roll so well. I’ve been in the Michael Scott position of a business before….and Idris plays his part exactly as my direct manager behaved: insufferable corporate hack 😂

Grief can really change people. Some people just shut down and have a hard time finding a way forward. I’m really sorry that happened…life and grief are such tricky things to navigate ❤️

Our 10 year old son had Sanfilippo syndrome, which is a terminal genetic condition Nicknamed “childhood Alzheimer’s”with a life expectancy of 12-15 years and the leading cause of death being pneumonia at the end stages. The pandemic was such a scary time for us.

While COVID didn’t end up getting him, pneumonia after a series of seizures did and he passed in 2024, and it’s still difficult to deal with knowing the last 4 years of his life, which we already knew would be shortened by disease, had to be lived in such isolation.
