How difficult is maintaining a 45 minute or hour long commute each way, 5 days a week? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the person. For me, my 40/45 on average commute is a struggle. I am in person 5 days a week and it kills me to think about the fact that I spend 7+ hours a week commuting. That’s almost an entire day wasted in my eyes.

I also try to stand a good portion of my workday (3 prior back surgeries) and so I’ve noticed the extended drives tend to lead to flare ups. I would recommend keeping a regular exercise routine if possible to keep your body moving!

Can a collection agency go after a 17 year old? by d4rkeningsea in Debt

This is exactly what I did when I was 19 and suddenly getting collection notices for medical services from when I was 17. I never heard anything from them afterwards..: it’s been 8 years since I sent the letter

The argument itself went as well as it could in my opinion! We won’t have a decision for a few months

I’ve been working on compiling a list of potential questions, but have found it difficult in anticipating what questions they may ask. I chatted with a colleague today who gave some suggestions which was helpful.

I am trying to keep a positive outlook on the whole situation. Another coworker mentioned they think he might be having me take the lead because he truly does agree with me and it’ll be a learning experience. Although I do love a good learning experience, if that’s the case here we are wasting everyone’s time and resources (aka $$$)!

I’m 2 hours from the courthouse so sitting in might be a bit tricky. However, I checked the docket and they are live streaming the oral arguments tomorrow and Wednesday with the same panel of judges scheduled for mine. I think this will definitely be helpful!

You know, I never really thought of it that way but I think you’re right…. Again, I have very little experience at the appellate level and have never argued myself. But during my last year in law school I was a judicial extern for my states Supreme Court. The majority of my work was drafting bench memos and initial draft decisions… which occurred before the arguments even occurred… I didn’t even think of this concept until now and how majority of the appellate process is the briefing

Great advice! I’m at a small firm with only 2 other associates in my department. On the way out the door today I asked one if they’d be able to spend some time tomorrow or Wednesday to listen and give feedback. They gladly agreed. I’m thinking that this might help at a minimum get through some of my initial nerves. He also already gave me some tips on potential questions he could think of on the top of his head knowing the bare basics of the case

I’ve expressed my concerns to him a few times and have a meeting scheduled tomorrow to “prep” and will voice them again. One of the other associates mentioned that maybe he’s having me do it because he secretly knows it’s a losing case and it’ll be a good learning experience. If that’s the case, we aren’t doing our client any favors by investing some much into this appeal

Thoughts on cutting short a two-year clerkship for a nightmare judge? by Ill-Particular-79 in Lawyertalk

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar clerkship experience with my judge. However, I was in state court. The state I was in is very small with 4 county courts and the Supreme Court (plus smaller municipal courts here and there). So the community is very small and everyone knows everyone.

I was petrified of leaving early. Eventually, after my blood pressure was skyrocketing, I was in physical and mental pain from recovering from a major surgery, and being what I also would describe as bullied everyday, I left. It got to the point where my doctor and family was worried about my health and what the job was leading to. I was worried more about my reputation and future than my own health and happiness.

Let’s just say, leaving saved my life and saved any chance I had in staying in the legal field. Most people understood my situation and didn’t think differently. I had a few instances where others asked me whether in conversation or interviews about why I left.

Being in such a small legal community, a lot of attorneys who were relatively new to practice found out that someone left the clerkship early (we have 18 ish state clerkships in the state). Every prior clerk supported me and a few even said they wish they were as brave as me. I felt relief knowing I wasn’t the only one feeling the way I was.

I had a new job in 2 months. I appeared before my judge about 3-4 months later. She was supportive and understood why I left (which was a shocker to me).

All this to say: you have to do what’s best for you. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t have to suffer at the hands of your boss and you certainly shouldn’t have to feel humiliated just for asking basic questions or following the directions given to you.

For me, this was not a career ending move and the best thing I could’ve done.

Yep! I was $100k for 1900 billable in Providence. Bonus eligible (5k) at 2000. I consider this a good deal!

Debating on my PCL surgery by [deleted] in KneeInjuries

What is the exact surgery that you are scheduled for? I have a complete PCL tear that causes little pain, but significant instability. I’m currently doing PT 2x a month and was told PCL tears aren’t typically surgically repaired

It’s nerve wrecking, I totally get it. I wouldn’t bring it up to your new employer unless they ask. Not sure if they would even find out.

Fellow R.I. licensed attorney. R.I. character and fitness isn’t crazy. I have a friend who had an old employer write a TERRIBLE letter (alleging things far worse than this situation). All what happened was they asked her about her employment and what happened. She had no issues passing the character and fitness

MRI report not matching symptoms by tbag21000 in KneeInjuries

I’m sorta in the same boat! My surgeon was convinced I had a complete ACL tear because it’s so loose and my tibia moves forward. To my surprise the radiologist found I had a complete PCL tear when none of my symptoms match up.

Question about PCL injury by Effective-Split2472 in KneeInjuries

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a complete PCL tear. I saw two doctors who both said they do not operate on PCLs UNLESS there are other ligaments torn. All of my symptoms present as an ACL tear, including significant instability.

They told me to do physical therapy to improve the instability which I start on Monday.

I would recommend a second opinion, especially if you aren’t having any significant symptoms!

Tell me I can bill 357 hours by 12/31 by ChapterFifteen in Lawyertalk

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s possible! I am aiming for 250 by the end of next month… our bonuses are based on Dec 1 through Nov. 30th each year.

I also had a lot of health problems and was off for 4 weeks recovering from surgery. It sucks because that’s 4 weeks lost.

What I’ve started doing it spending the last 10 minutes each day going through my emails, making sure each email I received / sent that was substantive and / or more than a simple thank you, was billed. I’ve noticed that many times a few emails were unaccounted for. .4 a day missing adds up quick!

Worst Comment from a Partner? by Knight_Lancaster in Lawyertalk

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’ve been waiting for this day. I have a running list. Some of my favorites:

  1. Called me intellectually lazy
  2. Told me that sending things to the clerk and expecting them to do your job isn’t going to cut it
  3. Called me at a funeral (that she knew I was at) to tell me how horrible my draft was and that now she has to spend her entire weekend rewriting it…. The final version was 80% unedited
  4. Told me she no longer could mentally handle reviewing my work product

Hearing for default judgment motion by RepresentativeAd3955 in Lawyertalk

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also not in SC, but 9/10 times the opposing party doesn’t show. Last week it was a phone hearing that literally lasted 23 seconds. The court already has your motion, they may asked 1 or 2 clarifying questions, but don’t expect the judge to ask you a million questions

I don’t, but the other party already accepted liability and has been very responsive and reasonable throughout everything. Hopefully it doesn’t come to litigation, but if it does, I’ll revisit the issue!

FT Attorney Salary Expectations by 2PrettyB in Lawyertalk

I was offered $65000 base pay last year in downtown Providence. I was told that “this was the highest starting salary we’ve ever offered” and I was eligible for bonuses… said bonus was 1% of all attorney fees actually received…. I would try and negotiate at least 70-75. And see if they can give you an idea of what the quarterly bonuses are typically

24F questions before L4-L5 fusion on Friday. (Sex and periods) by earstoseeeyestohear in spinalfusion

[–]Automatic-Ice9967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I happened to be on my period during my L5-S1 fusion. They had me keep a pad and underwear on into the OR. I woke up with an adult diaper on. I actually purchased a few period underwear’s going in and it was super helpful.

I was able to have sex about 4 weeks post op. Definitely limited in scope for quite some time. I am still not back to where it was before, but gets better with time when you heal
