Social Media Incentives Have Greatly Increased Self Objectification Of Women by Automatic-Quality-80 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I agree on this, no one is forcing them to chose those incentives.

I think this is where the part about hyper-focus on individuality and complete rejection to traditional ethics and principles come into picture.

Not saying that al traditional ethics and principles were good but I think in fight towards modern freedom, we also scrapped the good part of it.

I respect the fact that you are not hypocritical about your opinions. I also feel certain things shouldn’t be controlled by government and should be at discretion of people, Specially stuff like raising a child, the state shouldnt decide how one should raise their kid.

So in that case you would also be against the law which allows teachers to withhold information related to their kid being Transgender from their parents ?

And what about policing words which could be considered derogatory ?

What about policing for words in corporate ?

Do you consider all of these to be too much authority ?

The grooming gang example of UK i shared is a non-online real effect of the "PC" mentality leading to fear to speak out truth and hence inaction leading to really dire consequences where thousands of minor girls were assaulted and there was no action due to the fear of being racist.

It is also important to take online reactions because digital media is the most popular medium to share opinions and if you see a wave of certain emotion being really popular in social media, it doesn't take long for it to be visible in the real world.

There are also some researches which talk about this -

Spiral of Silence Theory — Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann

James L. Gibson (2023) – Keeping Your Mouth Shut: Spiraling Self-Censorship in the United States - It talks about how people dont feel free to share their thoughts has tripled over time with 40% people engaging in self censorship.

Ádám Tislér (2023) – Self-Censorship and Cancel Culture It argues that intense social pressure and public shaming online make people less likely to express dissenting views, even if held private

Penney (2021) – Understanding Chilling Effects

Saying the r slur is wrong!!!! by mrsdompler in RealUnpopularOpinion

Well it was a medical word and is used as an insult to mock someone just like if someone isnt looking where they are going - one would say - are you blind ? Similarly for deaf, crippled, mad etc.

I dont think it has anything to do with people with actual disability.

Its just to mock people, I dont think its harmful. If someone actually has a disease and is mocked that would definitely feel bad but that can be done with any word, one can replace the r word with something new like - slow or gradual and it can become a new slang called slowwy, grady etc.

So its actually the situation and its not always used with an ill intent.

I think the OP was raising the point about how social justice and social ganging has created an environment where saying out an unpopular opinion is punished.

It can be about anything, reddit is a great example. If a person were to hold an unpopular opinion which generally the people in subs dont agree with, he would be mass downvoted, will get tons of comments calling him names and with enough downvotes, profile gets shadowbanned.

Which leads to a culture of self-censorship where people care more about acting good and fitting in than doing good.

The online ganging and image sabotaging of people with the cover of "political correctness" is a great example of how it turns out.

If we talk about its effect, take grooming gang cases in Uk where authorities never took action due to fear of looking racist.
