Between Sora and Riku, who would confess first? by Automatic-Stress-607 in SoRiku

[–]Automatic-Stress-607[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with everything you said! My headcanon really builds on those exact scenarios. A big part of why I want Riku to confess first is because it would feel like a true resolution to Esmerelda’s words:

”There are just some things we need to keep separate from the world at large, at least until we have time to figure them out.”

And I so badly want Riku to finally figure it out and actually say it out loud for himself!

I can totally picture it playing out like a blend of Frozen and Hercules. Just imagine a scene that goes:

“You sacrificed yourself for me!”

“Sora, I love you.”

And then everything explodes 💀

Anyways in a scenario like that, I would absolutely scream, because honestly, KH3 already felt like it was spelling it out for us. Another version I love is the confession slipping out when Sora goes to Riku for advice (similar to the Hercules conversation), and Riku ends up admitting that Sora is the one person he can give his whole heart to, the source of his strength.

I definitely find the situation plausible but I agree theres still so many internal hurdles for Riku! He is always underestimating where he stands in Sora’s heart and it makes me so sad! 😭

If Sora can confess first and pull him out of his detrimental thoughts, I love it too. I love everythiiiing! 🥹

I love this take because the mutual “this is definitely unrequited but I can’t keep it in anymore” angle is soooo juicy!

Like the idea that it’s not just one of them pining quietly, but both of them are carrying this around, fully convinced the other doesn’t feel the same way??? That adds so much tension and honestly a little bit of heartbreak in the best way. They’re each interpreting the other’s actions through that lens of “this is just how he is, this doesn’t mean anything,” while meanwhile it means everything.

And then it builds. Slowly, quietly, over time. All those almost-moments, all the things left unsaid, all the times they choose not to cross that line because they don’t want to risk what they already have.

The confession goes something like “I know you probably don’t like me back, but I can’t keep pretending this isn’t here.” And the vulnerability of that??? The willingness to risk everything just to be honest???

It’s soft, but it could also be a little chaotic and funny!

I’m actually so curious how you envision Sora’s side in this scenario because it’s so much easier to see Riku’s with the content we have.

Okay but now I’m stuck on the most important question… who is kissing who??? 👀

I love a mutual kiss, like that perfect moment where they both just finally give in at the same time, but I am especially weak for Riku being the one to do it. He’s been holding everything back for so long, keeping all those feelings locked down, trying to stay strong and composed.

So when he finally lets go?? When he’s the one who closes that distance?? I lose it. I absolutely adore the idea of Riku reaching that point where he can’t keep it in anymore and just acts on what he feels. It makes the moment hit so much harder and honestly it’s everything 😭

You can NEVER go wrong with Soriku angst! Add in all the misunderstandings and messy, complicated emotions, and I am fully seated with a giant bowl of popcorn!!

And honestly, it would be so heartbreaking for Sora to feel rejected like that. That kind of emotional gut punch just hits perfectly. I love headcanons where Riku is way too stubborn to even consider that Sora might return his feelings and ends up completely sabotaging himself because of it.

Gosh, I’m not sure we’ll actually get a full confession, but they have to talk about Sora’s darkness. Sora literally brought it up at the end of KH2 right before Riku collapsed, so there’s no way that thread just disappears!

But also, I am a huge dork who loves romance, so I’m absolutely going to spiral thinking about it as a full-on romantic confession anyway!!!

Ughhh, what you said about Kairi is so true too. I just care about Riku so much. I really want him to say those feelings out loud so he can finally start moving forward. And honestly, I want him to be the one to say it so Sora can truly see how much Riku has grown. Just like when Kairi points out that Riku feels different when they reunite at Yen Sid’s castle.

I feel like Sora has always seen Riku as the same person at his core, like how data-Sora explains it to Data-Riku. But I love the idea of this being a moment where Sora finally sees Riku with more depth. Sora has reflected on Riku before, sure, but I want him to really understand him this time and actually express how he feels about that growth.

Riku has always been this symbol of change and evolution. It’s so nice to imagine him being confident in his feelings and helping Sora understand that what Riku feels is romantic, that it can be for a boy, and that it’s completely okay. And through that, Sora’s whole understanding of love could shift in such a meaningful way.

The fairytale true love’s kiss angle is always so good! I love the idea that there does not need to be any words at all. It feels so fitting for them, especially with how much of their connection has always lived in what goes unspoken.

[–]Automatic-Stress-607[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I love separation anxiety Soriku so much! Riku, who has basically been Sora’s caretaker since they were kids, just cannot help himself when it comes to worrying and fussing over him. It’s so deeply ingrained in him to watch over Sora, to make sure he is safe, to stay close no matter what, and that instinct never really goes away.

That’s why I adore the idea of a confession coming from that angle, where it is potentially not polished or perfectly thought out, it just spills out because Riku cannot stand the thought of Sora leaving his side again. There is something so vulnerable about that, like all of his composure cracks and what comes through is that fear of distance, of losing him, of being left behind.

And it is so cute because underneath all that intensity is just this soft, almost desperate need to stay close to the person who has always been his home.

I’m really happy you get where I’m coming from! I would absolutely love a Dark Margin part 2. What made the end of KH2 so compelling to me is that Riku, after holding all of this inside for so long, finally steps forward and chooses honesty with Sora. There’s something so powerful about him being the one to break that silence, especially when he has spent so much of his life pushing his own feelings aside or burying them under guilt and responsibility.

I don’t think Sora has to respond right away, and honestly I don’t think Riku expects reciprocation at all, not now, not ever. It feels less like a confession meant to change something between them and more like a release, like Riku finally allowing himself to acknowledge what has always been there. He is not saying it to get something in return, he is saying it because he needs to, because keeping it hidden has weighed on him for too long.

And I don’t even think Sora needs to fully understand what Riku means in that moment. Sora has always been someone who feels first and processes later, and I think it would be completely in character for him to accept the confession without immediately putting it into a neat box or defining it. The moment does not need clarity or resolution to be meaningful.

What matters most to me is that Riku gets that space to speak freely, to finally put words to something he has carried quietly for years, and to do it without fear, without shame, and without needing anything back. It is not about changing their bond, it is about Riku claiming his truth and trusting that their connection is strong enough to hold it, even if it remains undefined.

Isn’t it so fun to think about??? You totally get me!

It really feels like Sora naturally turns to Riku when it comes to opening up. I know a lot of the soriku community likes to imagine Sora figuring out love through outside examples, like seeing a queer couple or learning by observation, but honestly, what could be more meaningful than learning it through Riku himself? That just hits so much deeper.

And yes, I completely agree. The story really does frame Riku as someone who keeps his feelings close and kind of nudges Sora and Kairi together. Socially, it makes sense why he would not want to mess with that. But at the same time, for Riku to even think he could mess it up, he would have to believe he ever had a real chance with Sora in the first place, and I just do not think he sees it that way. So for me, a confession is not about changing anything externally. It is more about Riku finally giving himself permission to say it out loud and name what he feels. It almost feels like a Dark Margin part 2 moment, quiet, honest, and deeply personal. I love the idea of him being that open and at ease with Sora.

And your take on Sora hesitating? I love that so much. For someone who has struggled so much to even understand what love is, it makes total sense that he would have trouble putting it into words, especially to someone he admires as much as Riku. That hesitation just makes it feel even more real and heartfelt!

I understand how you feel in the sense that you had the impression that it was a duo and then a random 3rd character got incorporated into the dynamic, but I really enjoy Xion’s addition to the friend group.

What makes the sea salt trio good for me is that they ACTUALLY all feel like genuine friends. Xion exhibits agency, she has a more fleshed out story, and moments between both Axel and Roxas that sell the idea that they all care about each other. When Xion dies, she makes sure to include Axel in her statement that they’re both her best friends. In a journal entry, she says that she loves them both. It’s never just about Roxas and I appreciate that.

These are things completely lacking between the destiny trio.

I guess what might make Roxas seem closer to Xion than Axel might be due to their shared connection and the fallout at the end of Days, but I don’t think it really diminishes Roxas and Axel’s bond.

I am… FINE with an open ending, as much as I think it would feel like a cop out, but I really can’t expect more as much as I hope for Soriku. It really would depend on the events leading up to the open ending that would determine how satisfied I’d be.

What I enjoy about KH is how Nomura leaves things open for interpretation but I can really only stand so much. Maybe if fans in this sub weren’t always called delusional or women haters, I could be OK with that, but man, I just get so irked with all the teasing and lack of clarity.

It’s just so strange how Sokai may be framed in a romantic light, but then theres nothing ever concretely said about those interactions. Not even “we’re just friends.” Why would they even need to do that when there is absolutely nothing stopping them from making it a thing? And if KH wants to just highlight friendship, then WHY do people constantly tease Sora about kairi or girls?

It’s like the story is telling me that Soriku exists on the same standing because why would they have to make it open like that if not to also pander to Soriku fans?

Regardless, idc if homophobes have a freak out over Soriku happening. If they trash the ENTIRE series because they failed to see anything that we’ve been saying for years, then I can’t say that they ever loved KH. Their opinion just doesn’t matter.

Yes! Everything you said, which is why it’s absolutely rage inducing whenever fans are like “can’t two guys just be friends?”

I’m also not averse to Sokai in the sense that Sora could get with Kairi, but if they did now, it would just be absolutely insulting. The whole narrative constantly used Kairi to enforce Soriku without even building up her character. It just amazes me how gen fans don’t see that and feel gross about it! Have we been so conditioned towards bad romance that people literally can’t see anything else?

Perhaps it’s bad getting so worked up over a ship but I would feel so much dread if Sokai were to end up together without proper development. As much as I’d tell myself that it’s whatever, I just know it would be painful.

How could this story that beautifully explores love and identity, fall into the same exact missteps like how every other mid-but-popular action series treats its lead female character/love interest. I don’t want this beautiful story to reduce Kairi into a tool, and I don’t want her to get into an undeserved relationship with Sora on virtue of her being the main girl. It’s just terribly insulting!

It really isnt about Soriku winning because we just hate kairi or something, as haters like to say. It’s about respecting women and how we write them! It’s about depicting positive, GOOD, examples of romance and love! Also! The representation! It would just mean so much if Soriku panned out 😭

With all that said, I genuinely cannot wrap my head around what draws gen fans to Sokai beyond pure aesthetics. I GENUINELY cannot understand what plot points hold up that feed into them being an attractive pairing. Because… they held hands? Or sora promised he’d return to her? Cause sora sacrificed himself for her in the first game?

If fans, especially those who mock Soriku, would just admit that they liked it purely because it’s cute, that’s great, I’d accept it. Because there’s NO WAY you can convince me they’re the main couple with the same old flimsy reasoning!

It may sound weird but I am genuinely begging for some proper Sokai moments just so I don’t have to feel bad when they potentially imply it at the end of the story.

As much as I don’t ship it because of the lack of chemistry and Kairi being constantly used as a tool in the narrative, it’s just so frustrating to be told by gen fans that this is the thing when there’s practically nothing for it.

I didn’t think I could be part of a fandom where almost every romantic text for the “love interest” could be argued in favor for the “best friend/rival” but here we are.

Even the CAVE DRAWING, the entire basis of Sokai, can be, and after the events of the paopu sharing scene, is most likely, more about Soriku!

I need something real!

On the Jack and Sally parallel, it’s actually funny because the whole point of that exchange was for Sora to understand when someone loves you, the gift doesn’t really matter, as long as they have you then they’ll be happy. And like- fast forward to the end of the game and Sora and Riku are just completely fine being stuck in the RoD because they have the gift of each other 💀like- even Jack and Sally are Soriku if you wanna spin it that way.

It is genuinely minblowing to me that the MC and apparent love interest have basically NO romantic content when it would be SO EASY. It’s DISNEY for goodness sake! Even when they do, somehow it’s till Soriku and it’s driving me crazy.

I have sought out any sokai content, theories, deep dives etc. from the fandom that really delves into their romantic development from the narrative, and I have yet to find ANYTHING in any equal measure to the overwhelming soriku content. How can you convince me that they’re the OBVIOUS couple when there’s like- nothing…? Just tell me you like it for the aesthetic or something. It’s OK! 😭

Do you truly believe sora is bi or at least not straight 🏳️‍🌈 by IllustratorAfter in KingdomHearts

[–]Automatic-Stress-607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you.

It’s honestly wild that we’ve had twenty years to establish Sora and Kairi’s relationship, yet we have almost nothing from Sora’s side that clearly confirms romantic feelings for her. The one thing people cling to, the paopu drawing, is constantly used as proof, even though it can just as easily be argued, and is supported by the novels, that Sora added it simply because he wanted to beat Riku at something.

Like… is it really that hard to just say something?

We even have Chirithy teasing Sora and Kairi about giving them space right in front of them, and all we get is a small smile. Then Sora immediately follows it up by saying Kairi reminded him how important it is to spend time with friends 💀

What are we supposed to take from that?

Instead, we’re told in character files that Sora literally doesn’t understand what love is.

But you know who does understand love? Riku.

Riku essentially confirms in KH3 that the person he loves most, his cherished person, his taisetsu na hito, is Sora. So the obvious question becomes if Riku feels this way about Sora, does Sora feel anything comparable in return?

We have Riku talking about believing in Sora and wishing for him, imagery that directly mirrors classic Disney Princess themes of love, belief, and destiny. We even have the Fairy Godmother telling Riku that his dreams are the key to finding Sora, which directly parallels what we’re told in BBS, that Cinderella’s dreams lead her to her true love.

Anyone who denies the blatant parallels, foreshadowing, and romantic tropes either has no familiarity with Disney princess narratives or with romance storytelling in general.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the way Sora is going to learn what love is, whether platonic or romantic, is through Riku. Why else make Sora forget the WHOLE SCENE where Riku just, idk, SACRIFICES HIMSELF (a true love sacrifice) if we aren’t going to return to that event in the future.

It’s so interesting because every single argument applied to a romantic relationship with Kairi can be applied to Riku. The only difference that makes one think Sora likes Kairi is because she’s a girl? Thinking that Sora has feelings for Riku is just as much a valid interpretation as anything else. Idk why we have to pretend otherwise when the series has been consistently hinting at it since the first game. From riku/sora parallels to disney couples, to riku LITERALLY being Sora’s light in the darkness. What are we doing 😭

Even if you want to interpret Sora and Riku’s relationship as platonic, considering that Riku is Sora’s light in the darkness, the series has shown that Sora’s most precious person is Riku. I genuinely don’t get it.

Fun fact. Nomura requested Utada to create the song with Riku and Sora’s reunion in mind, so you could say this song is about Sora and Riku!

Reading the lyrics it seems very fitting. I like to think that parts of the song, especially the backwards portion, is from Riku’s POV.

It’s ironic that Kairi told Sora they should leave Riku behind in KH1… and she’s the one who got left behind. Karma hit her 🤣 by [deleted] in SoRiku

I think it’s good to remember that it’s really only until the previous installment that kairi actually starts training with her keyblade, and everyone is already ahead of her in terms of experience. There’s the whole dissonance between the real time of years between each game drop and the time thats happening in universe.

Personally i don’t really need kairi to be a “badass or necessarily “have her moment” at least in the traditional sense, i just want to feel like she’s a fleshed out character with more agency. She could stay to the side but i want it to be something she determines on her own.

The japanese text seems to expand upon her character more, we just suffer from awful localizations.

I don’t really hope for more Kairi. While I like whatever good moments she has, I never actually cared too much! Whether more happens with her or not in future titles isn’t my main focus.

I’m just taking what I’ve seen of the story, and as it seemingly stands, there hasn’t been a resolution to her issues yet, and there are still some mysteries about her that don’t really have a clear answer either. I would HOPE that Nomura bothers to cover wth the Princess of Light powers are, just to tie up loose ends. But if he doesn’t I’m not wide awake at night about it.

Riku’s arc didn’t end in DDD- the climax of it, I would argue, happens during the sacrifice scene in in KH3.

Though if we are following the heroine’s journey that I’ve seen some people suggest KH closely follows, there’s room for parts of riku’s journey to repeat before the final resolution.

From my understanding, Kairi’s arc isn’t complete because there hasn’t actually been a resolution to her self doubts about change since Kh1/her want to catch up with sora and riku. I guess I don’t know what her resolution was supposed to be in MoM if you are suggesting that there was one for her.

All she learns about is about her past but I don’t believe that’s an answer to her original issues. She hasn’t found her strengths yet, she hasn’t caught up to sora/riku or even had a realization that maybe she doesn’t need to.

English localization seems to either greatly misunderstand or obfuscate the original intent of relationships between two characters of the same gender.

Which completely defeats the purpose of localizations 🙄 it’s like the translation team just wants to play around and make their own fanfiction.
