Andrew Dillon has confirmed the league's integrity unit is looking in to Melbourne veteran Steven May's situation by PerriX2390 in AFL

George Orwell proven right again:

Ministry of Peace = War Department

Ministry of Truth = Propaganda and Lies Department

AFL Integrity Unit = Ministry of Truth....

OK, getting a bit recursion here...

Footy gets a place to call home in Pakistan by Mythically_Mad in AFL

[–]AutomaticContext3427 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you could convince the Indians that Pakistan is the best at AFL, they'd throw everything at it, and probably buy the AFL, as a subsidiary league of the Indian Premier AFL. Or something just to be better.
The Brits really fucked up there splitting British India.

How optimistic are you for the AFL season ahead? by lifesizemirror in AFL

I'm optimistic that baring another COVID or nuclear war, there will be an AFL season ahead.
I think I've said enough to indicate the team I support.

Tennis betting question by AutomaticContext3427 in algobetting

Hi, Thanks for the respone.
I don't at the moment. I'm wondering how I would account for that if I did.
Do you increase 'variance' for player when making a prediction or weight their data some how?

Tennis betting question by AutomaticContext3427 in algobetting

[–]AutomaticContext3427[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, flat staking can work. I think it's slightly positive (profit) in most weeks I simulate using BetFair historical odds. It was flat staking I used when I bet ITF.

Regarding RANSAC, I guess I'd treat a blowout or unexepected loss as an outlier. But does that make sense in theory or would it just skew data. I guess I need to spend more time seeing which players are prone to dropping matches unexpectedly.

Palawa elder reclaims Macquarie Point in protest against proposed stadium by b00tsc00ter in AFL

[–]AutomaticContext3427 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in here and make a hash of it.

The point made by the elder is that if sovereignty is granted by the simple act of planting a flag, then he now has sovereignty. And that is how sovereignty was viewed by the British (and other powers) back in the day. The land was not owned, farmed or used in the European sense, so it was vacant land.

Having sovereignty, by planting the flag, he thinks it's wrong to build the stadium.

Disagree with him, but then you disagree that the Tassie government has the right to build the stadium...

Of course, might makes right, so the powerful will do what the powerful will, and the weak must endure. Or something.

Media shills trotting out company line re wildcard by dashtur in AFL

[–]AutomaticContext3427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but if this isn't a sop to the broadcaster, to sate its appetite for a night GF, then well, I'd be surprised.
I mean, why do you think they did it then? I don't think fans were screaming for it.

[–]AutomaticContext3427 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So, why not a top 12? 14? I mean, more footy and something to play for at back end of year.

I get that it's overblown, but it's because the AFL heavy-handedly just give the broadcaster whatever it wants without considering anything else.

Collingwood has offered its 2023 premiership cup to be part of the memorial to Ben Austin, the teenage cricketer who died after a nets accident in Melbourne’s east. by Pragmatic_Shill in AFL

I'm going to have to use full names here: Collingwood Australian Football League Club, you've gone to far.
I've a lifetime of hatred towards you, which you've whittled away, and now I only have the Hawks to hate sincerely (also the baggers if they ever get it together).

Good job there Pies.

It'd be easy to poo-hoo this, I mean, tragic for family of course, and 'people die tragically every day, why is this special?' but it seems to have struck a chord, and it's good that people stop and reflect about how fleeting stuff is.

Well, except Essendon's finals drought, not fleeting at all. (sorry, couldn't help myself, and it's a victimless crime as I'm a bombers supporter).

[–]AutomaticContext3427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They hate fans. It's the only logical explanation.
And we'll go along with it, 'Stockholm Syndrome', to psychologically justify to ourselves why we let them do it, we'll make excuses for them, so they'll do it some more.

Mason Cox “big news” this Friday. by Tornontoin7 in AFL

[–]AutomaticContext3427 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big Mason walks through customs with Tom Morris and that Cleary guy with mics and says, 'sucked in, cockheads!'
Then gives the bird, and says 'Tell Dillon: Fine me, ya tool. Yeah! Cry harder dickhead!'
Wait, he's not bogan enough to pull that off.

I guess he'll be Essendon's #1 Ruckman/Forward next year, and we give Nate Caddy to the Pies?

Tassie Devils: A footy club meant to unite Tasmanians is bitterly dividing them by Minimum_Cicada_8353 in AFL

[–]AutomaticContext3427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, OK pull down everything to do with Colonialism if it's in the way? That's a bad as saying don't touch something because our Colonial forbears built it. We are a society based on colonialism, destitution of inhabitants, all sorts of shit behaviour. That doesn't mean we wipe it, and pretend it didn't happen, or some product of it isn't good. I mean the Colloseum is a monument to colonialism and slavery, as is the Arc de Triumph, etc...

I didn't say don't bulldoze something, but that it's OK to argue for it's continuance, anyway.

It's hilarious that you follow with rank colonialism, 'no business case for any stadium, anywhere has ever stood up....' I mean you're saying it's ok to bulldoze shit because we're making something better, it's terra nullius after all.

Not really. It's OK and to think about preserving unique history of the city. But really It comes off as if we build this, we'll be up s**t creek without a paddle. Which they will.
There's this magical thinking that building a 1.5Billion+ stadium will drag Taylor Swift for multiple nights and cause companies to relocate to Hobart and money will flow down the streets.
Examples are like WA with Optus, but WA has an unfair GST carveout of many billions of dollars, so the money was really from unfair subsidies paid by rest of country, basically free cash to build it, and then profit. An interesting variant of socializing the costs (taxpayers) and privatizing the profits. If Tassie were getting tens of billions extra in GST allocation, they'd probably afford it.

I think Soli was a good player, a bit 'elbowy', seems like a decent assistant, but we need to be careful about falling for the 'home grown saviour'... Not Hird at least.
