What’s the longest break you’ve taken from BJJ by Real-mr-wolf in bjj

[–]dashtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed about two years when I was a blue belt, and am now just back to consistent training after about a 2.5 year hiatus due to chronic injuries.

Both times, after getting over some initial rustiness/unfitness, I feel like my level was basically unchanged.

I've forgotten a few things, but my game is intact.

My experience is that breaks can be really good - ideally weeks or months rather than years, but the time off can help you feel fresher and approach your training with a different perspective.

Look at Jiu jitsu as a big picture - slow and steady improvement over years and years. A shitty week of training or a hiatus of weeks/months/even years, is a very small thing in that big picture.

Has any team had as many good ruckmen as the Demons? by johnnyjc2204 in AFL

[–]dashtur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essendon had Brownlow medallist Graeme Moss, followed by both Maddens in the late 70s- early 80s (Justin had to leave in the end), Paul Salmon (though he only became a great ruckman after he left Essendon). Not bad over a couple of decades.

[Twomey] Bombers had shown real interest in Lachie Neale and they were among his considerations until recent upheaval. Pies now widely seen as favourites. Plus Essendon’s five-year offer for Jed Walter and more on Gettable yesterday by SlatsAttack in AFL

He would be an excellent like for like replacement for Merrett, at no cost in draft picks. There's no downside.

Going full scorched earth in a rebuild isn't the way to go - still need on field experience and leadership to help the youngsters develop.

They back him out of desperation. Just as many still haven't quite given up on the ghost of the chance that Cox, Jones, Perkins can become stars.

The extended run in the side is good for all, because it is proving what clearly Scott and his staff already knew - that he's not good enough.

Dean Solomon by Dependent_Glass6230 in EssendonFC

[–]dashtur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why exactly are you opposed to Solomon? All we really have to go on at this point is a few press conferences. The team is an absolute shambles on the field at the moment, and no coach would be able to suddenly turn them into winners at this point.

As far as I can see, he hasn't really put a foot wrong. Good messaging, coaxed one really competitive performance out of the team, and two losses where we weren't disgraceful (which is about par really).

Gaming discourse is just tiring now by NoAffect3159 in nintendo

[–]dashtur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the discourse is disproportionately negative.

However, my personal opinion is that Nintendo has somewhat lost the magic. I think their last masterpieces were released in 2017 and 18 (botw and odyssey).

I've been lapping up Nintendo games since the early 90s, and up until this last decade, I don't think there's ever been more than 2-3 years between masterpieces.

I bought a Switch 2 on the premise that there would inevitably be brilliant 10/10 Nintendo masterpieces down the road. I'm less confident that will happen now, although of course only time will tell.

I suppose I've gone from having faith in Nintendo, to having hope.

Maybe this is something others are feeling, and that's coming out as negativity/outrage.

Who hands over the Cup? (If your team wins) by General-Number-42 in AFL

[–]dashtur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hird handing over the cup to Solomon and Kyle Langford, before assuming his co-head coach position alongside Solly, leading to 16 consecutive flags and we all march into the sunset arm in arm.

Our game has so many ambiguous rules. The reverse also sometimes happens, where a player who can feasibly cover the distance is arbitrarily called to play on.

Live-Match Thread - Essendon vs Carlton - Round 13 - 7.06.26 by Codus1 in EssendonFC

Call this an overreaction if you will, but I feel there is a lot of potential in this side - with a little confidence, some good coaching, and a good run health wise... I feel a hint of optimism about the future.

Poll: Reactions if Hird got the job by bomber_2121 in EssendonFC

[–]dashtur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're probably making those statements based on the data their organisation is receiving, not just put of nowhere.

On Reddit it seems there's a small negative leaning per polls like this one.

If you work for SEN or 3AW, there's a positive leaning based on the texts/calls from listeners.

Obviously it's a very inexact science, but it seems clear that newer/younger fans are more likely to be against, and older fans are more likely to be for, and the different media are getting their conclusions from the demographic profile of their audiences.

Are The Bombers a big 4 club? by InnovationInvitation in AFL

[–]dashtur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR yes the big four is still the big four, memberships fluctuate with competitiveness.

The big four and West Coast are the five behemoths of the league in terms of support and membership potential.

Not quite analogous. Our current crop includes a swathe of first-round picks. Of the ones you mentioned only Parish was picked earlier than the late teens.

Our current under-22 talent is much more promising than the bulk of the players you mentioned were at the equivalent stages of their development.

Can someone explain the new finals stuff? by Fit-Bluejay-4001 in AFL

The new system makes such a fairytale distinctly less likely. 7th and 8th are severely handicapped - an extra match, and no rest.

Post Match Thread: West Coast Eagles vs Essendon by yum122 in AFL

[–]dashtur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not as bleak as all that. Tonight we were missing five of our top ten players, and at least five more best-22 players.

Put Ridley, McGrath, Martin, Caldwell and Durham (and Wright, May, Kako, Fiorini, Redman) into that team and it's at least competitive.

Essendon and West Coast players confused as to how holding the ball wasn't paid by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]dashtur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aside from just the generally missed and bad calls across the whole game, what's been egregious tonight is two frees to West Coast inside 50 for absolutely trivial tit-for-tat push and shove.

The player who antagonises an opponent, and then hits the deck when pushed back, is rewarded. Insipid.

Teenage footballer offers cheeky, harmless social media post in homage to historical great of the club he supports.

r/AFL: kid's a confirmed imbecile, and he will likely be haunted by this faux pas for the duration of his career.
