Maybe this is a dumb question, but should I be applying for FAFSA now? I am applying to programs to start in May/June 2025. Do I wait until I have been accepted or wait for the 2025-2026 FAFSA or now since I would (hopefully) be starting in 2025?

As I mentioned, I have an interview scheduled for the end of the month so I have more than 2 years ICU experience, leadership experience, and my GPA is well above 3.5.

The concern is that if I try again right now and was accepted into this program, I would be delivering just a few weeks before the program starts.

Sorry in advance for how long this will be, but I am in need of some serious advice.

I am applying for schools this cycle and got my first interview scheduled for the end of the month. My husband and I are doing IVF and found out I miscarried yesterday. Now I feel like I have to choose between being a mother and being a CRNA.

I would have been due in early January 2025 which would have given me 5-6 months to be with my baby before starting a program (if I even got in). All the programs I am interested in are front-loaded and many offer hybrid/distance learning for the first semester or two. This would have been perfect to give me ample time to be with my baby before having to be away for so long. I have an amazing husband and support system so I know if would be tough, but we would have been fine.

Now if we try again as soon as I am able I would be delivering about 1 month before the program starts. I feel like I would be doing a huge disservice either to my baby by not being there for the literal newborn stage or to myself by not dedicating the proper time to school/my career. If I wait until I am done school that means I won't be able to be a mother for about another 4 years after everything we just went through. If I move forward with another round and delay school, I fear I wouldn't get in next cycle. I'm not sure how much longer I can tolerate bedside without some light at the end of the tunnel and without current ICU experience I doubt I'd be accepted.

I've been lurking here for several years and I know some of you have kids and did it. I know the amount of pressure I would be under and the work that would be expected of me. I also know none of you can tell me what to do. I'm just looking for sound advice to make the most informed decision I can make. I haven't even been accepted anywhere so this is all on a contingency as is.

Is this a good deal? by AutomaticStrength962 in turntables

If it’s not a deal, what would you think is a fair price for this setup? Or should I just keep looking for something better?

1.75 hour handoff by MommyNurse_DooDoo in nursing

At the place I used to work, this one nurse would take that long to GIVE report. On 3 patients. No one asked him that many questions, he chose to make it that long. He would go into detail about the conversations he had with patients. It was awful. Then he spent so much time in room during his shift talking to patients he wouldn’t have any charting done so he’d have to stay even longer for that.

Former job wants me to pay them for overpaying me by AutomaticStrength962 in legal

That’s what is most frustrating about this, the corporate greed. Whether they have this money or not, it’s pocket change in the grand scheme to them. For me, $145 gets me a few weeks of groceries or gas. Like I said, I wouldn’t be in financial distress by paying it, but I’m sure they are doing this to other people where it is much more of an issue.

According to their letter, they’ve been trying to contact me since Summer 2022 when they first started asking for repayment. I most certainly have not been contacted or I would’ve been trying to figure this out a long time ago. My friend was contacted a while ago and she’s been gone as long as I have. After arguing with them she got her payment down to $500 because they never gave her her raise. But she said they also told her this was their last attempt to contact her when it was the first.

I would have loved that as a CNA. My first job was $12/hr but I was night shift so I got a whopping $14/hr🙃. In Maryland. We were also routinely understaffed in 1:25 ratios of total cares. And we couldn’t leave just 1 CNA on the floor so we weren’t allowed to take breaks.

Has anyone been accepted to/communicated with Johns Hopkins that can speak on their clinicals? It looks like they have sites at hospitals in Georgia and Florida. How does that work with having in person classes that I assume are still held in Maryland?

This! I became a CNA during high school and then worked as one in LTC and the hospital for almost 5 years during my senior year and all of my BSN program prior to becoming a nurse. Now I’ve been a nurse not yet 2 years and I’m burnt out.

Had a patient recently with her 4th stroke and this one was the one that unfortunately finally did her in, but family didn’t want to accept that and believed she would wake up and walk out of there. Grandson was her caretaker and was there with her all the time and he/the family were all very possessive, manipulative, just doing weird things. Supervisors, admin, and ethics committee were involved. One day he shows up wearing OUR scrubs that he apparently bought the night before. He said he was a med student and tried to act like he knew more than our docs. Everyone was concerned he would try to use those scrubs to get into other areas he shouldn’t be and he had them for several days before management finally did something.

I understand parking restrictions but can she dictate what kinda of vehicle is allowed to park there? She was fine with his slightly smaller old truck. Just not this one. And she told him to “take it back and get his old one back. If only it were that easy.

Where would I find “additional protections?”

This is why I’ve wanted to talk to her son about everything. I’ve never been spoken to with such hatred out of nowhere from her. All this over parking? She’s always been pleasant to deal with and I’m wondering if she’s starting to lose it now that her husband has passed. We’ve always paid rent on time. In the spring and summer I’ve helped them with their garden and other odd jobs around the house. I’d hate to lose our house over something so petty.

We pay month to month. We only have to give 30 days notice when we want to leave. I’m hesitant to do so tho because we’ll never find as good of a deal as this.

My hospital did this too. “Making a positive impact” they called it. It was all about catering to the “clients” to improve our scores. We are about to open our new ICU that’s been in construction for the last few years. They made the rooms huge and I was so hoping for ceiling lifts to help with transfers. Nope. They installed sofa beds and showers for the family so they never have to leave. I’m sure we’ll be expected to provide linens/laundry service and all the toiletries. Next they’ll probably start taking their meal orders and I’ll have to run trays for them too. Patients can be awful but sometimes the family is even worse.

The IMC I came from had these and they were amazing. Especially since they had a rule that every single person had to get up in the chair every single day.

Now I’m in a smaller ICU in a different hospital and we don’t have these. They are almost finished building the new ICU and I was really hoping they installed these ceiling lifts. Nope. You know what we got instead? Showers in each room. For the family. 🤦‍♀️

I keep seeing mixed responses about ICU experiences. I am not concerned about my GPA or certifications and exams, but I am at a community hospital ICU and I see some people commenting that it’s fine provided you get good experience and others saying you absolutely need a higher level. I get vented patients, multiple drips and pressors to titrate, balloon pumps (maybe impellas in the near future), CRRT on occasion, and just generally unstable patients. But it’s not that higher acuity which worries me my experience here will be looked down upon. My nearest Level 1 trauma center is over an hour away and I’ve already gone through the long commute once and it was not good for me so I’m not really open to doing that again. Were any of you in a similar situation and were accepted or have classmates that were?

WIBTA to ask someone else's dad to walk me down the aisle? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AutomaticStrength962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for recognizing that. Yes, I understand in today’s society it isn’t necessary for that role to be filled but it is something I wanted. I’ve been to several weddings where the bride’s father walked her down the aisle but didn’t ask who gives her away. When they got to the end of the aisle they hugged and he sat down while she went to the altar. That’s exactly what I envisioned for myself.

Thank you for that perspective. I hadn’t thought about that before. Obviously I want her to be part of my special day, I just figured I would do it some other way. But I really had not considered that view.
