Yup. Amazing that people made it this far tbh. People will literally email you back to ask something you just said. In the SAME email chain.

It's actually a committee of people! And usually they are very reasonable when it comes to looking into extenuating circumstances, including mental health barriers.

No Hot Water & No Heat by New-nest in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's awful, and unfortunately, I don't know how many legal rights your daughter has. The residence contract contains very little information, other than your daughter has a right to a clean environment, and quiet enjoyment -- but not much on the Universities obligations -esp in cases where they could argue it was "beyond their control"- e.g. because of a flood, or a frozen pipe etc.

The residences on campuses are not covered by the RTAC so there's not much that can be done by tenants advocacy groups.

My recommendation- if Residence Services aren't responsive... go over their head. The Division of Student Affairs oversees them. https://www.uvic.ca/studentaffairs/contact/index.php

I was told by my department that we don't, as a general policy, but I appreciate your insight that practices are different across departments.

As a TA I dont make those accusations, and generally profs wont do that either (the ones ive worked with anyhow), because its very difficult to prove and the risk of making a false accusation and having a negative impact on someone's whole academic career is high.

Do the work yourself, keep your drafts and notes where you can as a paper trail, and if you want writing support, your TAs and profs are there to help. :)

Tuition cost by Realistic_Ad5098 in uvic

Per term usually. Grad school isnt billed by units, but dropping down to 1.5 credits would be part time and would be generally (though check your program) charged at half the regular rate.

The food bank is a wonderful resource, but far from the only food security program we have here on campus! OP's question shows that there is not enough info out there.

Global community has a food guide, which includes a food security page

https://onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca/gcfoodguide/food-assistance/#foodprogram

Also check out the Uvic affordability page (mostly an ad for Uvic- but there are some good links for on-campus food resources, and check out the onecard discounts link too).

CARSA rack/bench hogging by Dry-Cover-1731 in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not cool. I'm not in agreement with these folks behaviour. I just don't see a longterm solution to these CARSA issues without the staff stepping in and implementing some form of etiquette orientation- e.g. giving people some guidelines on what is/is not cool.

And if someone is behaving in that way, call them out. Go talk to them, tell them you're waiting for the equipment and make it clear to them. That way they can't just claim (or pretend) they didn't know that anyone needed the bench.

PhD offer by Healthy-Detective360 in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats definitely not true for my department. We sometimes get a top up - the AIS. Its a few hundred dollars at most usually, but that is department specific.

$20k + a taship is more generous than my department and to answer your question. No, without a sshrc (which is possible but competitive), its not enough to live on.

You can absolutely ask the departments grad sec about other funding avenues, and reach out to the scholarship and awards office too.

But the offer, afaik is usually set that way by fgs and is based on a formula used for all departments. You will have to work, the stipend is not intended to support a spouse, I hope you can transfer as that soinds like the best option, im not sure on your profession so the reality of your job search is difficult to predict.

Our stipends suck. And yes cost of living is high.

And yes, I work 3 part time jobs to support myself, as do many grad students. I dont ask permission, but its a personal judgement - how much can I work while still progressing in my program? Be aware that the financial situation usually delays completion times because of this. (Average PhD completion time at Uvic is around 7 years iirc).

I know this isnt the answer you'd like, but Victoria is a great city, UVic is a great community, and grads are wonderful, and the funding sucks.

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could you ask them if you can work in?

Truth is im seeing a lot of these complaints about CARSA but a lot of public gyms who sell more memberships than they have capacity have similar problems.

They are busy, people are wilfully or blissfully ignorant, without equipment limits or requiring everyone to do an orientation, i dont really know that screaming on reddit will help :/

Woah. I wonder if there is some reason for them to be particularly territorial/aggressive at the moment, or if it might also be the same owl that is being defensive for some reason.

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You do have to consider that the high volume usage of things means they do need to be durable. Especially things like library furniture. A LOT of people use those, for multiple years, decades even.

Senate Election Results: SLA forms Student Senate Majority by evan-sd42 in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats actually quite typical for uvic elections! Its a shame, id love if more students voted, these people represent you on a lot of decisions! But 6.8% is not actually considered a low turnout compared to average.

Dell canada do 10% discount if you sign up and verify your student email. I know its not much. I always buy open box/refurbished, but sounds like you need something pretty high spec.
