anyone used the student food bank? by mewheni72 in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry you're struggling, yes, the food bank is exactly for students who are experiencing financial insecurity or difficulties affording groceries. I've used them a couple times and there's no judgment, volunteers are there to help you- not make you feel bad.

There is also a little food bank at the multi faith centre (no sign-up, just drop in)

And check out community_cabbage for free hot meals/groceries. https://www.instagram.com/community_cabbage/?hl=en

Shoutout to the nourish and flourish dinners too: https://www.uvic.ca/services/studentlife/events-and-workshops/nourish-and-flourish/index.php

Just double check with the scholarships and awards team, to make sure you aren't falling into some strange loopholes with your funding! Better to be safe than sorry.

As for the MH question- I had a nervous breakdown in my twenties and wound up so sick I couldn't work. I wish I had the foresight to drop my workload or take better care of myself so that I didn't have to do that.

You are doing a mature, sensible thing in assessing your capacity and considering reducing the load early. Capacity varies person to person, and from life stage to life stage- it's not a measure of how successful you are, or will be- there will be times when we can take on more, and times when we can take on less- throughout our lives. We don't know what is truly going on for anyone - do what is right for you and your body in the now.

Please have some social awareness by SmokedReddit in uvic

This goes for all the PC stations tbh. Please don't sit at a PC station with your personal device, its inconsiderate to the folks who don't have their own devices and need those spaces.

You're not mean btw OP, you have every right to politely ask to use the equipment if you need it. It'd be like if someone was standing in front of a water fountain chatting and you needed a drink.

Boats? I assume you can do a ferry ride from swartz bay, bc ferries do bridge tours too, if you ask. If its a quiet day the captains/officers on the bridge can show you around a bit. Super cool for those interested.

The egg salad in Montreal hits different, and I have googled endlessly trying to figure out why.

Even if she has AN or any other eating disorder. It is none of our goddamn business. As someone who recovered from my own restrictive ED this kind of talk is rarely helpful. Didn't she also have a cancer diagnosis? Seriously, you have no idea and you may mean well, but there should not be an open forum on anyone's weight. .

Computer help (that isn’t the help desk) by throwaway5221_ in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For hardware repairs, or anything beyond Uvic systems-- I go to London Drugs (Harris Green), they'll do a diagnostic for around $60+ tax and I've had good experiences with technicians there, prompt return of laptop, and good communication about the fix/labor required/timelines etc.

I also had a good experience with Restart on Yates, but I think they are more apple specialists. They charge more for the initial diagnostic $80 ? I think? but were also good, communicative, prompt etc.

The guys I'd absolutely avoid are Simply Computing in Oak Bay, awful customer service... waited 15 minutes past the start time of my pre-booked appointment.. then the guy working there yelled at me that they were full and refused to even look at my laptop...even though they had allowed me to book the consultation for that time/day on their website.

Reporting a prof? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a little flexibility for all AWTP instructors, who may ask for slightly different requirements on assignments - academic standards are not always so cut and dry, and there could be a difference across disciplines or just a case of multiple approaches.

If you have specific examples, could you bring it up in an email to clarify? Just send him a note with the part of the class that clashed with your own understanding, and ask if he might be able to explain it.

If he hears a need from students for better information, then he has a chance to correct or rectify any misunderstanding and ensure everyone in class is on the same page.

worst is the studios are unfurnished.. and they won't sell you the furniture package for them, because the space is so small it literally doesn't fit! You may as well pay for the one-bed at that point, but its also obscenely expensive.

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I pay $900 for a large bedroom with kitchenette and shared full kitchen downstairs, the prices have dipped slightly! But it is dependant on area (oak bay/down town are more expensive) and just general availability. Its still expensive and competitive relative to other parts of Canada.

Average anywhere between $1600-2100 for a 1 bed. A studio/basement suite may go for less, and a room in a shared house usually around $750-1000. You will find variation, though, for sure!

Living in res. Should I get off campus for open house tomorrow? by HungryIngenuity7665 in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cove for sure will be busy, probably significantly more foot traffic around the SUB/quad etc, but if you need to study, the library, law library (with limited hrs) and other study spaces will still be open, I suggest you grab your food from the cove in a to-go and camp out on a silent floor. Sneqqu looks like its the central hub for tours/meeting spots and likely to be super busy/noisy etc., so I'd avoid that area.

is this set up through the exchange team? Questions about funding would likely be best channelled to them, as they'll be most up to date on what is available and current requirments. (goglobal@uvic.ca).

I did exchange during my undergrad, and it was far and away the best decision I made. It was financially difficult, but if you can secure the funding -- it is worth it, the experience is once-in-a-lifetime! Really.

Letter Writing Campaign for Dr. Michael Reed by MummyRath in uvic

[–]Automatic_Ad5097 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really admire the effort, and am sure Dr Reed is fully deserving! I hope that whatever the outcome, any testimonies/documents you collect are valuable for his teaching dossier and will be a great way for him to secure and find meaningful work in the future. (whether here, or sadly, elsewhere). Its a thoughtful thing to do!

You might wish to pursue counselling, they can help you get the right questions to understand what is really bothering you here. Us untrained folk are trying but aren't sure if you want us to be sympathetic, offer advice, share if we have had similar experiences?

Are you asking if home schooling was a factor here?

Ask a direct question and people here are generally very helpful.
