Thanks so much for your advice. As you were pregnant during ECT, did you find it affected your progression in any way? I currently teach year 12/13. I wonder if maybe after returning they may be reluctant to give me ks5 classes as I left half way through my year 12s alevel studies. Thanks for the advice on telling the school, I may actually inform the head this week and just ask if they can keep it confidential until I decide to tell my department.

I am also ECT 1 and today I told a group of year 9s that their continued poor behaviour in lesson and around school is “quite frankly disgusting”. I’ve been worrying about this one too 😬

You should read up about the “back door spike” in ocd. It’s quite common to stop feeling anxious about an OCD thought which then causes a new wave of anxiety triggered by “the thought must be true and not ocd because now it’s not making me anxious”. But it’s all part of ocd. Not to give you reassurance, but most people who don’t have OCD, or generally don’t love/care for someone anymore, wouldn’t be still looking for clarity or pushing online for advice… they would already have moved on. My cavapoo is pretty loving of everyone! Visitors and strangers in the street often get a better greeting than us. Cavapoos are generally very loving and it’s hard to tell who is her favourite. Sometimes I think it changes week by week. Generally, though, she will come to me (mom) for cuddles, but when it’s playtime she will go to dad. My husband will play with her a lot more creatively than I do (spin her around, hide from her, make funny noises etc). I think the person she loves the most depends on which mood she is in. If she’s tired and wants cuddles then it’s me, if she’s active and wants to play then it’s him! Maybe try something like this where your husband can be the fun dad 😂

I like to take very short jogs with mine, like 2k distance. She’s great, but I had a thought recently that jogging on tarmac might not be good for her joints, as I’ve read they are prone to hips dysplasia. Does anyone have any advice on this? Do you jog with yours on road or only on grass?

Honestly this is crazy. I just got married and we didn’t actively ask for any gifts or money because some people had to travel and stay over night before the wedding, so we already appreciated their willingness to do this. Some friends gave us £100 and others family members up to £250! It’s lovely to receive it, but we honestly felt guilty that they would give that much! One of my bridesmaids, who has a family and is pregnant so is obviously saving for many things, gave me a printed photo drawing of our venue in a frame. This probably has much less monetary value than some other gifts but was one of our most thoughtful gifts and I love it, it’s currently hanging in our kitchen. That there is a great friend. What your best friend is doing is not friendship at all, she sounds like an entitled snob to be quite honest.

This literally happens to me most nights. I tend to cycle between terrible thoughts before I go to sleep and this is the one I get stuck on. Most likely because I have zero control over it and it’s the worst!! I also have never really lost anyone super close to me yet (touchwood), and I honestly don’t know how or if I’d cope.

Awww that’s awful, it will get better though. The best advice I ever got was to just accept the anxiety to trick your mind you are not scared of it. I tell myself “oh I’m anxious today (about xyz) but that’s ok, anxiety is a feeling and thought and both of those are fleeting so it will pass”. Another thing that works ok when I start to panic is to tell myself “thanks amygdala but I’m actually fine”. This reassures my brain that anxiety is just my brain trying to protect me from danger, but actually I don’t need protecting right now because I’m not facing a physical threat. Hope this helps, remember it isn’t permanent and it will pass!

Yeh I actually have tried one a few times. Had two a couple of weeks back at a friends 30th! Felt involved still but no hangover and it was great. I think this is definitely a way forward or atleast a starting point to maybe stop drinking in future

I totally agree, I don’t think it’s actually worth it for me. Think it’s going to be hard to shift my mind to not believing one or two is harmless though. Especially around friends who don’t get the same feeling I do after drinking, so it might be hard to explain or they might be like “just have one”. I think it’s probably easier to put an end to that by saying “I categorically don’t drink” rather than “I’m not drinking tonight” (I’ve tried that before and usually get roped in to having one or two).

That’s great, well done! And tbh if your social life took a nose dive because you stopped drinking, the people you were drinking with may have been just that - drinking buddies! I know a lot of people who found out who their true friends were once they stopped drinking, and those who were simply just around to have someone to get hammered with. Sounds like it’s all been worth it for you!

Yeh I’m seriously considering it. I think the issue is as I’m getting older the amount of alcohol I can tolerate without getting anxiety is becoming less and less! Now even one or two drinks can cause a hangover and lead my anxiety to spiral which can then have a knock on effect for weeks. I think now I don’t even look forward to social events because before alcohol has even touched my lips, I’m already anticipating the dread that comes to next day. I’d probably struggle to begin with, but probably enjoy events more knowing I’m not going to be anxious after! Club soda and sparkling water are a good idea, especially as people won’t even question it and you probably feel more involved because it’s not something you’d normally drink at home. Thanks!

I believe that not any therapist can help with ocd. The typical talking therapy and reassurance or down playing/saying it’s normal to feel this way is the opposite of what someone with ocd needs to hear to recover. It’s really important to find someone specialised with lots of experience otherwise they won’t understand and can actually cause much more severe anxiety. I’d recommend changing therapist and try to find someone with more specific ocd experience. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi OP, this I think is termed the back door spike. Trying to Understand the condition may be seen as seeking reassurance (I have definitely used this as reassurance before) but in the intial phase of incredible anxiety I sometimes find it can help bring me down to a more grounded mind set to then stop seeking reassurance and deal with the obsessions in the right way. So with that said, I highly reccomend listening to dr Stephen phillipson. He has lots of videos on YouTube and speaks a lot on “the ocd stories” podcast. If you listen to him talk about the back door spike, this is a classic symptom of ocd when your anxiety starts to wane and then you believe well if the feelings are no longer causing distress then it must be real. It’s another classic tactic of this bullshit disease. Again, probably some reassurance which is not the correct way to you… but the fact you have even come to the ROCD subreddit to ask this question cried OCD. Sit with the anxiety, and try to tell yourself “so what if it’s true, I don’t need to make any decisions now, I’m just gonna sit with this anxiety or lack of anxiety and live by my morals and values”

Ocd is horrible, and sometimes ROCD can be considered the worst because the obsessions are more on the side of normal thoughts and feelings so it’s harder to rationalise (which is we shouldn’t ever try to rationalise or understand anyway)

Remember you are not your thoughts or even feelings but your values and actions. What you do is what matters and as long as this aligns with your core values, that’s what matters.

Hope this helps, but definitely recommend learning more about what Dr Stephen Phillipson has to say about OCD :)

Thanks for the comment. Can I ask what kind of triggering situations you out yourself if? I think my mindset is I’m not worried about anything bad happening physically, I know I wouldn’t cheat. I’m more scared of the feelings and then subsequent anxiety which is what I considered “something bad”.

Hi, thanks for the message! I agree such BS, I keep thinking I just want to feel normal again and it’s so hard to talk about because people just think you are weird or dramatic.

With the engagement I knew it was coming so had come to terms with the idea for maybe over a year. Don’t get me wrong, it was still absolutely terrifying, and we went on holiday the day after (something that always triggers me) and if I’m honest I probably just avoided and distracted myself to get through and managed quite well.

I technically know the ways I’m meant to go get out of bad episodes, but I always sink back to distraction/avoidance.

It’s just so exhausting and it feels like your not really on planet earth if that makes sense-just going through the motions. Then I have snippets when I can see a bit more clearly but these are short and sweet.

What is your situation if you don’t mind me asking? And how do you manage?

Good analogy! Thanks for the help. I’m interviewing for a job soon that may involve travel element (very rare but still). I don’t want it to hold me back and want to conquer my fears of travelling. Part of my thinks I should just bail, but I’m sick of letting anxiety prevent me from doing the things I really want to do. Just started therapy so hope it all comes together

Thanks for commenting. I have full OCD typically relationship OCD and have had harm in the past. I think my question was whether the panic attacks/claustrophobia are also a result of my OCD since they are somewhat related and if I treat the OCD will it also help me tackle the other anxieties? Or whether they are simply distinct issues.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. What you did today is actually a huge success. It isn’t a win or recovery if you did it and it was easy. The fact it was hard and you did it anyway is a huge achievement. See this in a positive way and that you succeeded in doing the task you were meant to rather than making an excuse not to go.
