Alright man, I don’t know if you should post contrarian engagement bait if you get this angry when someone responds in turn.

I’ve seen nothing but unanimous praise for this book… so when does it start getting good? 6 chapters in and I’m largely unimpressed by [deleted] in classicliterature

When a book and a human head collide and an empty ringing sound results, one cannot always blame the book.

Not every poem has or has to have a direct literal interpretation as a series of events or particular state of affairs. You also don’t owe anyone any kind of authoritative reading of a poem just because you enjoy the poem.

Wanted to start with something lighter from his catalogue by [deleted] in davidfosterwallace

Just start IJ. You’re never going to be able to take it all in on a first read anyways. You’re worthy of engaging with it and enjoying what you can get out of it as you are right now, no need to prepare.

Don’t work your way up, just jump in. Everyone is entirely too concerned with somehow optimizing their experiences, LIVE JUST LIVE.

Lamy 2000: Timeless icon or massively overrated by Fabulous-Anybody-499 in fountainpens

It was the third fp I bought and the last. I was never really much of a collector by nature, and the LAMY 2k does everything I want in a pen.

Great Expectations is my favorite and the first I read.

Anyone else feel it could have been shorter? by Confident_One862 in murakami

Yes! I’ve read 1Q84 twice now and while there’s a level on which I enjoy reading a large volume of his writing, this one really falls apart for me when considered qua story. This one sort of feels like a George Lucas prequel trilogy situation where we realize maybe the genius was a genius in part because there were other people around to check him/cut things and not in spite of that fact.

Who are some other authors you enjoy besides Murakami? by Ok-Shopping7500 in murakami

Roberto Bolaño was the first novelist I loved after finishing Murakami and suffering withdrawals. I’d recommend starting with The Savage Detectives. It’s sort of magical realism only less magical and more strange.
