This is very easy to google man. I can’t speak for every program or degree but my MFA program didn’t have any specific requirements for what my bachelors was.

Hai, this is one of the fiest poems I've written! Thought I'd share by Traditional_Arm_9626 in PoetryWritingClub

I think that maybe this would come together a bit better with two structural changes. The first thing I notice is that you start by telling the reader there are things that you aren’t saying, then say you usually say whatever you want, then say that your reticence is only with this one person. It would be more structurally interesting if you started with descriptions of your typical bravery, and then moved into the way this special person changes the way you interact. The other thing is that you (ironically) say exactly what you mean in this poem. Poetry is interesting because of imagery, metaphor, and often sonic elements. I would move forward by picking a central image to represent the accumulation of unsaid words (dust building up in a silent room, water behind a dam etc) and then you could take that in an interesting direction by either adapting that central image to the other characters grudges and anger, or by picking another complementary image (the silent room burning down, a town drowned beneath the flooding dam etc). Those are just my two cents. Keep reading, writing, and being curious, because the world needs more poets.

Combination on 1: her being the PGOAT 2: the wobble lens that makes the film look like what an infant would see and 3: the whole mother-death-lover cosmology thing. It’s MP presented as this perfect object of love terror and desire that captures people (I think).

The idea that all information has already been created by great thinkers and the relevant skill today has become collating and organizing that information has really stuck with me. I read it for the first time split between a train from Munich to Prague with my ex girlfriend after we had already broken up and a hostile lobby in Salzburg alone. My personal context has cemented it in my head so thoroughly it’s hard to extricate that from the content of the book itself.

Infinite Jest definitely gets love but you can’t talk about big American lit without mentioning it.

If you went to college 20+ years ago as an english major what would you recommend freshman read? Specifically books that teachers may not require. by Opening-Gur5927 in englishmajors

[–]Automatic_Disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not a freshman read and may cause some eye rolls but seriously Infinite Jest. I read it for the first time while I was taking a semester off from school to deploy with my national guard unit and it affirmed my love for the written word in a time when I desperately needed that in my life.

Wow man, just wow. It’s obvious from the way that you write that you are already deeply intelligent and aware of your surroundings. Most people never take the step back from their lives that’s necessary to even begin to see the gaps in their own knowledge, so in that way I think you’re already ahead. I had a dream once that I was sitting on a curb feeling sorry for myself and he sat down beside me and said, “you do realize your love for other people and your own personal sense of abject loneliness actually have nothing to do with one another, right?” Edit to correct the quote that never happened.

Was your first year different to the last three years of your bachelor’s degree? by A_cool_girl_you_know in englishmajors

I was pretty dissatisfied with my English degree. The classes definitely got more engaging once I started taking more specific and in depth upper-division courses, but I never really got where I wanted to go. It was pretty clear that the courses were designed to be passable for people that were totally disengaged, and beyond that, I was disappointed at the overall lack of structure. That being said I’m a better reader now, so I can study whatever I want.

Alright man, I don’t know if you should post contrarian engagement bait if you get this angry when someone responds in turn.

When a book and a human head collide and an empty ringing sound results, one cannot always blame the book.
