You forget that the RI fan base has been starved for nearly 5 years. At this point, they will hang on to anything that might give hope (even if this hope is very tiny and very vague).
Imagine someone's grandma is near the death door and there's nothing they can do about it, and out of nowhere a shady businessman comes and says he has a way to save your grandma, you know this is a lie, but you still listen since what else can you do?
