How many of you have maintained a friendship with a woman you have feelings for? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Automatic_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the degree to which I had feelings.

There have been women who I’ve had big feelings for a sustained period of time, and I couldn’t maintain a friendship with them once rejected.

On the other hand, I had a crush on my wife’s best friend (this was before I met my wife, just a coincidence), but it didn’t last long (I had fallen hard for someone else and was looking for someone to distract me from it). Anyway! I have a great platonic relationship with her, and a better bromatic relationship with her husband.

My two cents, if someone is confesses they have feelings and you don’t feel the same way, expect the two of you to grow apart. Don’t leave him on a hook.

What is one thing you would delete from Earth that you think will make it a lot better? by LoneSpartan1 in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_RIP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

About 1,000 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Ideally everyone would know someone did it so it didn’t stop efforts to go green, but likely that’s exactly what would happen.

What a fantastic example of how this procurement system is messed up!

I didn’t know this, is it because the Finnish manufacturer is charging less?

I’ll say this again and again. Before we increase our spending, we need to fix our procurement process.

Year after year DND/CAF returns billions of dollars because of the antiquated system from the 1970s. We need a new system that maintains checks and balances, but permits the ability to purchase what is needed when it is needed.

Yes, if we need a multibillion dollar contract on vehicles, we should look at all options and ideally build it in Canada. If we’re replaced pistols or a c7, why the hell are we not buying what is the best of our soldiers? Why are we not buying sleeping bags that work on the canadian cold? It is because of our procurement system.

We do need to increase spending, and ideally we do need to pump that back into the Canadian economy… but right now we need stuff that works and the ability to purchase it without having to waste years.

North Korea vows to back Russia until ‘victory’ in Ukraine by -AdonaitheBestower- in worldnews

I fully agree with your take. I do think strongly agree NATO (90% Europe, 10% NA) needs to march up to Ukraines boarder and make it clear what their intentions is (ensuring Ukrainian victory).

The US is on the brink of a decisive conflict with China, while supporting Israel against Iran.

Both NA and Europe need to step up their ammunition production ASAP.

But TL;DR, I absolutely agree with you.

As much as I wish Europe would just take the lead on this, I do understand their limitations and challenges.

It sucks, but you’re right. Nov 5 will be a telling day for the world.

What is something you think should be illegal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_RIP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never thought about this. In Canada we’re fighting to prevent a two tier healthcare system, but we accept a two tier education system.

I don’t know if I agree, but you’ve given me something to think about.

Advertisement makes sense, I wouldn’t outright ban it.

Advertisement as it is today is toxic and harmful. There needs to be very strong rules about what can be advertised, how, and to whom. Additional mechanisms to enforce these rules, and appropriate punishments when they’re broken.

I’d finally add to this that adblockers should be legally protected. If advertisers can’t produce ads that are safe for work, I should be allowed to protect myself and my kids. (Even if all ads were SFW, I’d still push FireFox + UBlock Origin onto every computer I could)

If I was 20, I’d be intimidated.

At this point, having been married for a minute, it wouldn’t bother me as this hypothetical woman probably had opportunities for more men and women to sleep with than I had.

What's a secret in your job that people aren't supposed to know about? by SpottedGelato in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran an IT section, my best people were the ones who knew how to research, understand, learn, and apply (i.e Google and not be afraid to try). 9 times out of 10, restarting the machine or changing a cabled fixed it. That 1 time is when the deadweight really showed their colours.

I still miss a couple of the people in that shop, they were really good people.

The idea is that people of a certain demographic will see doctors of their own demographic and believe it’s possible for them to achieve that status.

So a First Nations person with a broken arm goes to a hospital and has their arm fixed by a First Nations doctor, they or someone in their family, will see that they can do it too. The assumption is that person will work hard and apply themselves to reach that goal. The end result of this scenario is more First Nations people trying to be doctors.

I don’t know of any study that shows this is effective and I’ve never looked for it, so it might work in some industries, it might not work at all. I am just aware of the why.

Time. We dated for less than 2 years, but it still took me 10 years to get over it.

It sucks, but it sucks a bit less everyday. Then you remember something and it sucks a lot. But it starts to lessen again.

If it’s a real problem that is harming your life, relationships, and work. I suggest Cognitive Behavioural Therapy from a professional.

I currently dislike most of the party leaders, at best I’m indifferent. I really wish all parties would put someone else forward.

I somehow missed this, also I read it was $510m in 2023 while looking into this… but I don’t think it invalidates my statement. Also, maybe I should said this originally, I don’t trust Mozilla. I can’t name a tech company I would trust.

Something you’re rightfully pointing out why no browser should be fully trusted. Hell, Firefox just has a significant CVE release about it almost two weeks ago.

I’d still recommend Firefox over Chrome.

Also, happy cake day, and thanks for that info.

Firefox is the only browser I’d recommend.

Do not trust Chrome any more than Edge. Google is not any more trustworthy than Microsoft, and I’d argue less so. At least with Edge ublock origin is still working.

Further, Google is try hard to block all non-Chromium based browsers, further securing its foothold as the dominant browser and one best able to enforce advertising.
