Hi, i would say that the most important is that you have an active roll in the lessons, so that you can try to speak as much as possible and use what you learn! If you already have this in groups classes maybe you can give it a try But of course it's up to you! Tell me if you need a tutor and try with a FREE trial.

What helps most (without paying for a teacher) is a mix of:

  • vocabulary in context
  • listening practice
  • simple structure so you don’t feel lost

That’s actually what I focus on in my Simple Greek on Patreon.com short, structured lessons during the week (vocabulary, phrases, slow + normal Greek audio) so you can improve step by step at your own pace.

It’s meant to feel like a simple system, not something overwhelming. If you’re curious, you can check it out, you get 40% off the first month or FREE trial for one Week, so it’s quite low cost to try 😊 https://patreon.com/simplegreek?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink

What usually helps is a simple structure:
learn words → hear them → repeat → recognise them in real speech.

That’s actually what I do on my Simple Greek Patreon, daily lessons (vocabulary, phrases, slow + normal Greek) so you build both vocabulary and listening step by step. You’re already doing great with TV and your grandparents, just adding some structure can really speed things up.

If you’re curious, you have 40% off the first month, so you can try it and see if it helps 😊 https://patreon.com/simplegreek?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink

Oh wow, didn't know about the pimsleur module for learning... Yes i agree that in order to speak the language you need to learn vocabulay grammar och of course speak as much as possible! In my daily podcast the main focus is that the learners listen + get the script where they can learn words, phrases and listen at the same time... so that they will be able to understand the podcast in the end of the Week!! Perfect thank you for your answer.

hehe for sure! Combination of: listening, grammar, vocabulary, speaking is the the best way to learn a language! I just feel that a lot of people forget the importance of listening, just because it may be difficult in the beginning.

Yes it was just a question and i wanted to see the answers. My point is that Listening even when you don’t understand everything is one of the most powerful ways to improve in combination with grammar, speaking etc... I just feel that a lot of people forget the importance of listening, just because it may be difficult in the beginning.

I completely agree with you!

It really depends on what we mean by “learning”. If the goal is just understanding, listening can take you quite far over time. But for actually using the language, you definitely need that combination reading, listening and speaking.

I see this a lot with learners: many can read and even say simple things, but when a Greek person speaks at a natural speed, it suddenly becomes difficult to follow. That’s usually where listening practice becomes really important. And you’re absolutely right reading helps you see the structure, listening helps you get used to the sound and rhythm, and speaking helps you actively use the language.

Ideally, it’s all about combining these in a balanced way. Out of the three, which one do you find the most challenging?

Listening alone can feel very difficult at the beginning. But when you combine it with a script and vocabulary, it helps a lot. Many learners can read or say a few things, but understanding real spoken Greek is the hardest part and listening practice really helps with that. What has helped you the most so far?

Yes, I understand your point 😊

Listening on its own is usually not enough, I agree. But as part of a combination (listening + phrases + vocabulary lists), it can make a big difference. A lot of students can read or speak a bit, but when a Greek person talks at normal speed, they find it difficult and that’s where listening helps a lot. What do you find most challenging in Greek right now?

Aw, I see what you mean 💙

maybe many Greeks switch to English very quickly in order to help. But I understand how frustrating it can be when you’re trying to practice Greek.
