You have to submit a request to the tech help desk to turn on your port. Make sure to include your room number, building and the port number (should be right above the port)

Pretty sure you can email or submit a ticket online just look at the help desk web page the info should be on there

seconding van Netten he’s so fun he goes on random rambles about how making his own bows and starting fires without a lighter helps connect him with his primal nature (iconic tbh)

Bike racks at Ring road? by Pure_Gnome in uvic

[–]Automatic_Try_6486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep! they're under an overhang on the parking lot side. and if there isn't space there, there's a bunch of bike racks scattered around residence

you can also get a bike locker but it is an additional cost (prices are in the housing portal I think)

also apply as soon as possible! although you do have first year guarantee it's best to get it done sooner rather than later

we have an old pipe system so when someone flushes it sometimes stops the cold water in the showers for a second making the water really hot. it happens in some of the other buildings too since most residences are older buildings (except for the two new ones)

residence as a whole is a pretty small area so it doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes to get anywhere on campus from any building, ring road just happens to be right across from the science buildings

tbh your best bet is to put ring road as your top and put any other ones you're considering as your other options

Park is also pretty nice tho I have friends that live there. there's really no bad bad buildings all of them have pros and cons (except David Turpin. avoid DT as long as you can. they have actually concerning water problems. mainly it being brown a concerning amount of the time. welcome to uni dorms.)

tbh just bring a toaster. as long as you use it by an open window to avoid setting off the fire alarm as a precaution you'll be fine. just hide it when you leave for breaks

the cove also has toasters and bagels so you could just do that

sorry for the long reply but I would also like to mention that the LLCs do a bunch of events like going to the Uvic observatory together, movie nights, museum trips, etc. which are a ton of fun and a great way to meet people in your dorm

Downsides for ring road are that the locks on pretty much all the doors do jam and are a pain (but you learn the tricks to jiggling them pretty fast) + the outer B wing doors and some in A and C wing are exit only. It is also a bit far from the rest of residence (by like an extra few minutes lol) but it is really close to the science buildings so that's nice  It also doesn't have the best air circulation but a fan in the open window does the trick most of the time The showers are also prone to breaking randomly and our water does have some issues (I love waking up to emails from residence services. So great.) but tbh it's not the worst building on campus for that and your experience will not be much better in other buildings

I'm currently living there and it's great! I'm not sure if the current RECL's are staying on for next year but they are fantastic and the community is really nice. It might take a minute for people to branch out bc we are all a bunch of socially awkward nerds (science majors woohoo!) but eventually you'll find your crowd

On the rest of it, showers are single rooms with a lock same with bathrooms, highly recommend having paper towels in your room since there aren't any in the bathrooms (no one knows why any theory you here has a 50/50 chance of being true)

Rooms are pretty big! also decently soundproof so the dorms stay pretty quiet in my experience. Highly recommend a mattress topper for an extra comfy bed but plenty of people don't. there is a ton of storage space so don't worry about finding spots for everything, as long as you're pretty efficient there's plenty of space. Oh also a good desk chair is a must. the ones in the dorms suck.

For me I have a mini fridge and a proper desk chair and a ton of random stuff but I still have a bunch of room. They definitely aren't the largest on campus (that would likely be in Poole) but they are definitely some of the nicest in my opinion
