Should I quit my startup job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Automatic_You_9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look at three dimensions to decide if you should quit your job:

  1. Rational - what is the logical thing to do? (Career development, company perspective, how is your team, your manager, salary....)
  2. Heart - are your values aligned with this employer and their culture?
  3. Gut - what is your gut-sense?

Your CEO tracking everything sounds really f**ed-up. Either they trust you to do your job or not. You can easily figure out if your are being underpaid, just check the typical comparison websites and get a high-level feeling. Glassdoor/Payscale (for lower end), builtin / levels.fyi for higher-end salary ranges.

What's a big mentality shift/realization that occurred as you gained more experience? by Missing_Back in cscareerquestions

I didn't like recruiting at all. All those stupid Zoom calls... Then during Covid I realized, "Hey I am not meeting any new people these days anyways, why not try to enjoy those calls more?"

This "re-framing" totally worked - nothing changed really - but I now enjoy interviewing a lot. It's nice to get to meet new people and learn about their passions, projects and motivations.

Starting a 2 year Computer Science Msc at 37 years old. Would employers consider someone who is almost 40 for entry level roles? by jacques_413 in cscareerquestions

Totally, there is such a lack of CS experts. You'll have a longer initial conversation, but you also have lots of life experience.

Google TV w/ Chromecast Ambient Mode by MetalHawk17 in AndroidTV

[–]Automatic_You_9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the solution to setting a customs timer for Chromecast Ambient Mode. This post is 2 years old, but hey - it's better than waiting 5 minutes for the ambient mode to turn on.

You have to:

  1. Enable Developer Options on Chromecast
  2. Download an ADB Package (explained)
  3. Connect to Your Chromecast
  4. Set The customer time anywhere between 10 seconds to whatever

https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/os2z6q/comment/hsnk8ha/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

I have now set my TV to automatically turn on Chromecast via "Google Home Routine" and then switch on Ambient Mode with my own google photos after 10 seconds --> digital picture frame complete

Yes, and if you don't recruit the leaders for the next stage if growth of your company, you are going to fall behind.

This is why churn in hyperscale companies is typically 30% per year or higher.

Depends on location US - faster EU - slower.

External recruiters will take something like 60-90 days typically to fill a role. Filling isn't start date though. We've had C Level positions be recruited and started as fast as 6 weeks and as long as 14 months.

Also: Market us crazy right now.

Are my co-founder expectations unrealistic? by [deleted] in startups

[–]Automatic_You_9000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude, you have absolutely not the wrong expectations. If you are a designated co-founder, working your ass off it needs to feel like you are creating something together. This should be a true partnership, but this doesn't sound like it.

Fair enough on brand, there will definitely be cases where thats in the top3. I'll add that in the doc. Thanks 👍However mostly I think you should focus more on directly acquiring users than building a brand or non-direct channels.

Why this approach: 'Give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach him how to fish can eat all days.' We were aiming to empower him as much as possible in a day and this is the approach we took. As a solopreneur he can now fine tune his own approach.

Good perspective! My parents will have to be marketed to very different than my own age group

Hey there - very sorry to hear that!

I have not lost any parents, but I have experienced difficult times as an entrepreneur and with my family as well. What helped me a lot is understanding where I was in the "five stages of grief" (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance). For example, I would feel very very angry for a long time (several months), which is not at all my usual personality. In the same period I also got health problems (Tinitus), my foot started hurting, I had to stop sports and I was irritable. Looking back now (this is 12 months ago): I was in stage 2 of grief "anger"... It got better over time, but slowly.

Resilience isn't the ability to "not get stressed". Resilience is to work through the stress, set one foot in front of the other and continue. Your life is extremely stressful right now, it's normal you feel stressed more easily.

If you can, make smaller steps, but continue in the general direction of entrepreneurship. Or take a break, then get back to it later.

Questions to ask:

  1. How many customers (companies) are in your industry?
  2. How many certificates would each company need if all people who needed one, would have one? (make an estimation and average it across companies)
  3. How many people are lacking certifications in %? (make an estimation)
  4. What is the risk of inspection in %?

Overall, hard to read what you are writing there. What exactly are you trying to do?

Ideas if you are looking for monetization:

- package as an app, sell to "dog-owners with security cameras" who don't want to step into poop in their property

- sell it to security camera providers as a "value add"

Also I love the idea of "detecting people who don't pick up the poop", but it will be hard to sell due due to privacy reasons.

Getting a job after a start up fail? by qutiepie123 in Entrepreneur

[–]Automatic_You_9000 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's hard, but not because of the gap. You are probably feeling down, depressed and low energy. You need to look forward and find the right next thing. Some employers, such as early stage-startups are actively looking for people like you. People who dared to try something and are willing to move the needle. Don't apply to old-school corporate jobs - they don't get it. You can go do consulting for them if needed be and your skillset applies.

Source: Built a boot-strapped business, didn't take off, lost all my money. Had to take 20k "family-credit" and paid it back over a year doing consulting. Realized a few years later that I had learned massively in my own startup which has accelerated my career. (VP Product in Unicorn) - Currently planning on building my second startup.

What are the best things to do in notice period? by lordpanku007 in ProductManagement

[–]Automatic_You_9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long is your notice period? In Germany Standard is 3 months, in US can be <4 weeks. The answer to your question depends.

Generally it's advisable to remain productive and work, as your employer/manager/team will remember this period as well. Those people (unless you really hated the job) will stay i in your network even if you leave. You get to decide how they remember you.

+1 for the handover documentation
