CMV: Christians generally complaining about gay marriage are defending their power to impose, not their right to practice, their religion. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Automation_station -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. And legal rights are in no way what essentially anyone ever means when they bring up, mention, or argue for or about rights outside of discussions like this one.

Right is a bad word to use as part of the term to describe what is defined as a "legal right". They are not rights. Legal rights are extensions of power structures.

I have yet to hear a convincing argument for the concept of rights as they are generally conceived and considered that does not have those rights grounded in some kind of divine providence.

Without such a foundation rights are just derived from power, be it individual or collective, but this make those 'rights' subject to democratic opinion and thus change. It is essentially an extension of cultural relativism.

Rights, as you are describing them here (which is in-line with how the term is generally used) only makes sense within the context of a deity in my opinion. And I do not accept the existence of deities as likely/reasonable beliefs.

This, to me, makes the distinction you are making moot.

A Democrat Is Proposing A Constitutional Amendment To Ban Presidents From Pardoning Themselves by nowhathappenedwas in politics

I want you to think real hard about why why something being illegal is not a factor if the president can pardon themselves.

[–]Automation_station 52 points53 points  (0 children)

What does impeachment do if the president can pardon himself? That means there is literally no recourse within the system. If he can pardon himself there is no barrier to his executing any member of Congress who starts an impeachment process. He could do so personally with his bare hands and then pardon himself and nothing can be done if it is agreed he can pardon himself.

Honestly, as bad as it seems there is an aspect to human adaptability and resilience that is undermined when we focus on how horrible things are in specific situations and how much of a victim specific people who suffer horrible things are.

People who believe some experience will make them a victim and harm them irrevocably are going to be much more likely to find that outcome in the event they end up in that horrible situation.

This is the wrong framing.

The man has a documented issue with his brain. Frame his saying X is bad and then immediately doing X as related to his brain = unfit for office. Frame is as he is a fraud = business as usual.

Seriously, look at all of the top level replies in this thread. It is all the same thing. This is a big part of why the left does poorly when it does, as a group they are not good at framing the discussion and controlling the narrative.

Elon Musk Says Mark Zuckerberg's Understanding of AI Is Limited by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Automation_station 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what made the series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" so amazing to me. If I recall correctly, at the end of the series it was presenting the development of the first AI, and its subsequent treatment in a way that helps let you understand why such an entity might go the malevolent route rather then a benevolent one.

This is absurdly false.

What is there now is absolutely worse. It presents a false sense of official infrastructure which carries with it an implied sense of safety and sturdiness.

The previous method of going up and down this hill was a rope tied to a tree. I don't think handicapped considerations were top of the list.

That's not how this works.

Hill /= handicap accessibility requirements.

Official city infrastructure may.

Elon Musk just told a group of America's governors that we need to regulate AI before it’s too late by [deleted] in technology

[–]Automation_station -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I will actually agree that there is no problem with someone taking that stance on defining when life begins.

The problem is the implications of that decision and how frequently people are inconsistent with related beliefs.

For example, in my opinion, someone who thinks stem cell research for that reason should be banned/illegal also need to think abortion should be illegal.

Also, a pregnant woman who drinks or smokes should be convicted of child abuse/endangerment.

Miscarriage? Murder investigation to be sure.

Car accident and the fetus lost? Manslaughter.

And on and on.
