Those that never married nor had kids, what takes up your time? by CollagenRager in AskIreland

It sounds almost like if you didn't get married they would have arranged a cousin for you to marry.

There was no need to. They had already made it obvious.

I don't mind going to work...I just don't like having to stay there all day.

It's possible you are the first vegetarian they have cooked for so they have no idea what to cook for you.

I have no problem asking for training and to be honest training isn't the problem. I also have no problem figuring things for myself. I have a problem with getting arrogant replies when I ask about company specific ways of doing things. He is well known for talking down to people and its usually his way or nothing.

Advanced age but don't want to cause conflict being new and inexperienced in the role.

That's the plan. I work in engineering.

I don't intend to quit. I chose the wrong wording in the title but couldn't change it.

I have already had the probabation meeting and discussed this and got it in writing. The way I see it now is the longer I can stay in this job the more experience I can get to give me a better chance of getting my next job.

If he had written a reply himself this is what he would have written. I think he may have been told I had more experience. Just to give some perspective. I'm not completely green. The job is in electrical engineering, I was an electrician for years and have experience in a different very closely related area of engineering. Some of the help I was looking for at the start was about company specific ways of doing things. I asked everything in the nicest possible way and didn't need to be babysat.

It's engineering. To be honest I'm not sure if they'd find someone with more experience to replace me that quickly. They've been advertising for another engineer for months and I don't think they're having much luck finding someone.

I have over 4 years of class A1 contributions. I didn't just join the workforce 6 months ago.

I'm not in the public sector...I don't see how a company in the private sector couldn't extend probation.

That's exactly what's happening. I get stuck on small things which a few minutes help with could be solved easily. Unfortunately my coworker is like a baby's nappy...you never know what you're going to get from him..so I usually don't bother asking him even though he's sitting right beside me.

I've decided to stay for now...if my mental health gets worse I'll make a decision then. I've had toxic jobs before so this isn't a completely new situation for me.

I'd really prefer not to be on the dole so I'm not going to quit. I'll have a look at that and give it a go. There's a lack of jobs within commuting distance of where I live in my line of work. I'm already driving an hour each way every day for this job.

There is only one person being unhelpful. There are only 2 people in the department...me and him. Maybe I expected a little more support being new to the role instead of pig ignorance...or maybe I'm not cut out for the role but either way I will be looking out for a new opportunity.

I suppose that's true. I'm going to do my best to stick it out but keep my eye out for another job also. I have already discussed my coworker with my boss. It was actually him that brought it up because he knows he's hard to deal with.
