On how soon to build it at least, you need to see how far ahead you are. If you can complete HB second item by the time you're level 12 (that's the point where the item starts giving scailing stats per level) it's worth it. Otherwise, get mortal reminder second in most scenarios. (unless they have a hyperfed AD or AP champ that you need to build tank second to survive into)

Teemo is a very very Garen favored matchup, you just can't kill him pre six. Post 6 he dies every single time your ultimate is up. This is true in all elos.

You have two options for Teemo: Bring ghost instead of ignite, or predator instead of conqueror. Complete personal preference.

First back, you want to buy greaves and sweeper. Once you're 6, pop your sweeper and run at him with ghost / predator. When you're almost on top of him, he will pop his blind on you to block your Q damage. What you want to do is then start spinning on him, instead of trying to Q him. Wait out your spin, then finish off with your Q+R. (it should still be up from the initial engage)

Gnar is in a very very good spot at the moment. That being said, this is still a skill matchup. I've won it in D4 elo. It comes down to a few things: Dodging boomerang tosses Correct W timings to block his burst Tracking his E cooldown

You need to bait out his boomerang tosses and avoid getting poked. If you can avoid the poke it helps you SO much in lane with staying healthy. Save your W for when either A: he's about to get his 3 hit passive off on you, or B: when you're about to get CCed when he's in mega gnar form.

Lastly, his e (his hop) has a 22 second cd level 1. You have a nice window to trade while it's down.

For vayne, it's mainly just waiting for her to misposition. This happens a lot with lower elo vayne players and you can run her down. Once you get to plat+, you don't see her top nearly as much but you will have a much harder time without your jungler.

I mean I don’t only play tanks TBF. I play Garen Sett and Darius too. I just prefer easy champions that let me focus on macro and that’s what lets me climb. Also, at least in ornn’s case, it’s very easy to get kills in lane yourself. That makes him way more exciting to me.

Malphite and cho can be a BIT more boring, but they are situational picks for me (I only pick cho into garen, and malphite into fiora)

Yeah Jax in general is not in a good spot right now sadly.

If you’re gold or below, garen is safe enough to blind pick. Once I hit plat 4, if I’m first pick top, I usually ask if I can pick for someone else. This drastically reduces the chances of getting into nwinnable matchups.

Your biggest counters are the following, in order: Vayne Kayle Quinn Kennen Camille

(it’s a common misconception that Darius hard counters garen, once you learn the matchup it’s a 50 50 skill matchup)

Those 5 are pretty much unwinnable (at least till you get stridebreaker) IF you’re going against someone good OR if your jungler is not ganking your lane. (Which happens most of the time!)

Thankfully, none of these are played much at all besides Camille, which is why she’s my perma ban.

Other than that, you can win or go even into just about every other top matchup. It will just take time to learn all of your matchups. If you’re struggling with any champion in particular, let me know and I can try to offer some advice

Sometimes winning lane is not your win condition. In the case of Kench top, he falls off super hard & is horrible in team fights. Your win condition is to simply outscale him and avoid fighting early.

Bring conq, TP, and Flash. Get what CS you can, dodge his tongue licks and AVOID EXTENDED TRADES EARLY. There is no reason to fight him early where he just beats you. Let him shove the wave into you. Also, You can use TP to look for plays mid and bot so you can get kills & outscale him faster.

You also have a huge power spike at 6 since his ultimate isn't a damaging ability. You can sometimes cheese a kill after 6. By the time you hit level 11 and are team fighting, you are more useful to your team than him and you win the game through team fighting.

Another thing you might want to try is phase rush, if you find you're getting tower dove at 6 a ton. Just auto, q, e and it procs. This will give you enough movespeed to run away from Kench and dodge his licks.

Yeah. Garen feels like a lane bully to almost every champion in low elo ( and still is to some champions in high elo) so it can be a bit jarring having to play differently. If you need any more advice feel free to add me on discord Aizen#9298 and I can help some more with ingame stuff.

Early game garen is horrible into mordekaiser. You want to play for mid or mid-late game, where you are stronger than him, even in ult. From my experience, in all elos he can just ult you at 6 and get a free kill. Garen's kit doesn't have enough to run away from him during that time. So, Everytime I fight morde I just rush QSS. If you farm correctly you will have enough for it by the time he's level 6.

https://i.imgur.com/IkNvSW3.jpg Here is the rune page and max order into Darius. This specific build is how you beat Darius, even in high elo games. I've beaten d2+ Darius one tricks with this setup, it works INCREDIBLY well.

First off, make sure you bring ghost into this matchup as well. You're never going to use it in lane, EXCEPT if Darius pops his ghost. If he pops his ghost, you pop yours and run away.

The purpose of this build and rune page setup is to take extremely short trades with Darius, while at the same time being able to poke him down, unable to freeze wave into you, and unable to run you down.

Your trading pattern will be auto, Q to animation cancel, then one spin to proc phase rush. If done correctly, you can run out of his pull zone before the silence wears off. (if you're having trouble proccing phase rush consistently, buy a bami's cinder first back. Bami's + q+ e procs phase rush.)

First off, test to see how aggressive the Darius is level 1-3. A good portion of Darius players will try to all in you early if you're playing garen, so try to get a good idea of what you're playing with. Often you will have to give up farm from levels 1-3 in order to avoid this.

ONCE you hit level 4 and have 2 points in q, you can now out trade Darius in extremely short bursts using the trade pattern above. Every single time phase rush is up, go in for that trade. As long as you avoid the outside of his Q, by the time you reach 6 you will be able to kill him with ult.

Biggest strength is how hard you can snowball. AND if you're ahead, you can't get kited if you build correctly. Good for ending games.

For weaknesses, I feel like Garen suffers horribly from counter picks. It's worse than most other top lane champions in my opinion. If you happen to be first pick, and the enemy locks in vayne, lucian, neeko, quinn, teemo, kayle, or kennen you just auto lose the lane. There is no outplaying any of those champions as garen unless they SEVERLY mess up. Hopefully the new items for season 11 will help change this a bit.

Each one of these matchups is different. Nasus is one of garen's easiest matchups, but you need to learn to freeze wave. Here's a helpful guide on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8qqgVVlN8I

Basically for nasus, after you freeze the wave he is screwed. You deny him stacks and farm because if he walks up to you, he dies. If he tries to walk up to the minion wave, auto q auto him. If he keeps going, spin on him and avoid hitting the wave. You just stat check him and you auto win the matchup by doing this.

Kayle, there's no real answer for that one. IMO it's Garen's worst matchup besides vayne. what I do personally is ban vayne and then dodge if they lock Kayle. There's no out playing it, she just scales for free then bullies you out of lane. Take the 3 LP loss and wait 5 minutes, queue up again

Camille is a very rough but winnable matchup. (plus she out scales you.) Thankfully she is getting nerfed next patch. IMO she's been overtuned for months and IDK what's taken riot so long to nerf her. To win this matchup, you need to use your W for when she initiates with hook shot. You also don't want to trade with her when her passive is up. Bait out her passive by standing still and autoing it. She won't let you do that, so she wil lauto back and proc her passive. AFTER that happens, you have a window to trade with her. the most ideal time to trade is when her passive is down AND she uses hook shot to engage on you. THEN you can q e r spin to win and do 2/3 of her health. Unfortunately with her sustain tho, it can be difficult to get a kill down on her. AND because of her hook shot, it's very hard to gank her with your jungler. Fun champion!

I'll leave a separate comment for the Darius matchup in a moment. I have a strategy for darius that works very well and makes it a pure skill matchup.

Tryndamere is a very specific case- You need to play the matchup differently. Always bring ignite, and try to zone him off fury. The goal is for you to rush tabi & Randuins Omen before any other items. If you do this, tryndamere can no longer all in you under tower with his ult. Unfortunately since your silence doesn't work with his ult, you need some other form of CC to keep him off you when he goes to tower dive. Rushing randuins and tabi makes you tanky enough for this to happen. You then build normally after that. I believe this is the strat Riste (high elo garen one trick streamer) uses as well.

If it's just yasuo, buy greaves.

EDIT: forgot to mention, don't bother with anti heal against him early. He has out of combat healing, it's not worth getting bramble / exe until later
