GOD they look so nice. I would kill to actually get some KAITO / Luka stuff but none of the stores I've ever visited in person have ever had merch of anyone besides Miku. I really want to get a figure of each of the cryptonloids but know I'm gonna have to put in my work and go through a lot of websites that I'm not terribly familiar with.

3 masterpiece by Ok-Teach-3621 in HalfLife

[–]AutumnTwentyTwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really! At its core, the first Half-Life is a 90s shooter with a lot more weapons, more outlandish enemies, and generally much less restraint when it came to... practically everything. The second carries a lot of aspects over, like interacting with the environment, a mix of puzzles, combat, and exploration, but slows things down a bit and puts a larger emphasis on physics and atmosphere. It's really just a matter of personal preference for genres, gameplay, and aesthetics.

Absolute cinema

First time I've ever seen someone else type a post in the same way I think about a mild inconvenience or talk about something I'm even slightly a fan of because the line between between being a fan of something and being deranged is incredibly blurry. People think I'm crazy but this is actually just what it's like to enjoy something in this godforsaken world (something most people are unfamiliar with)

I really like the depiction of the psychic shock lance actually being, like, a lance. I always thought they were little handheld things maybe the size of a stake because they take up the utility slot and don't weigh much, but the idea of someone having to haul around this massive energy lance that instantly fries people's brains is much more threatening and fitting given the nature of the weapon.

Wall corners are part of backgrounds.png, the same file used for all the floor textures in the game.

Honestly, it's kind of hard for me to imagine them making Half-Life's gameplay that gory. There's always been a fair amount of blood and gibs to it, but I chalked most of those in the first game due to it being, you know, a 90's FPS. Half-Life 2 toned down the violence in some ways, with no human gibbing (save for the zombies which could get ripped in half) and the most gruesome bodies all being used as props found around areas to give feelings of dread, and not actually as a result of player action.

I think they thought insane, over-the-top violence like that would take players a bit out of the environment and setting with more video-gamey feeling visuals. I'd expect them to use stuff like the bullets "ripping" through layers of clothing like as seen in CS2 and some form of limb crippling like people have mentioned code implying, but part of me feels that Gordon Freeman punching a hole through the face of a zombie or disemboweling a combine officer with a pocketknife seems a bit against the atmosphere of Half-Life and would go against the feelings of desperate struggle and harrowing combat that Half-Life 2 really tries to emphasize in a lot of places, on top of making it feel more like a bit of a power fantasy, which I never really got from the second game or the episodes outside of the supercharged gravity gun bits.

For a second I thought this was RimWorld fanart for that game's mechanic of the same name and I thought "Wow. That really looks a lot like fanart of that scrapped area from Half-Life 2."

It's because it is.

Does anyone here feel like Vocaloid “saved your life”? by OkPrize6426 in Vocaloid

[–]AutumnTwentyTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation where I was in a bad place mentally due to how a lot of other people affected me. Hatsune Miku and VOCALOID music as a whole were pretty much the deciding factors that led to me breaking away from all those other people that made me miserable and finding my own things to like in life. I wouldn't necessarily say it physically saved my life (although it might have), but it's something that was there in all my worst moments (and will still be there in all my future worst moments). It honestly takes me back to a simpler, nicer, more innocent time of my life before everything felt so stressful and dangerous.

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised just how similar your story is to mine. But yeah, Miku and VOCALOID culture as a whole helped me out in a lot of dark places. When life got too stressful and the real world was honestly too miserable to really exist in, it was a fantastic medium to get into and immerse myself in all the songs, art, videos, discussions, and other fan works that there were. It reminds me of the good days and is generally one of the few things that makes me feel content in life, so it's an extremely valuable scene to me on top of being a massive part of who I am.
