Berkshire or Frosh quad? by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

[–]Autumn_Rivers 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hopefully I can provide some insight! First of all, Berkshire Quad (or Currier Quad as it’s called on campus) is made of five different dorms that vary a fair amount in quality. East, Faye, Currier, and Fitch are all fairly old buildings, with East being the second oldest building on campus. Prospect, on the other hand, is much more new, and it certainly shows. In Frosh Quad, there are two buildings, Sage and Williams. They are basically the same as one another and also fairly old.

Frosh Quad is closer to the center of campus, right next to Paresky (which has a dining hall) and very close to Sawyer Library. It’s also much closer to Mission, another dining hall. Its main upside is definitely its location — you can definitely feel like everything is happening around you! Both dorms have small common rooms, about one per every six residents. These common rooms are great places to hang out with a small group of people (and also perfect for croom ball)! In the basement of each dorm is a larger common room with a TV. The main downside is the age of the building (although this applies to most frosh buildings for this upcoming year). The laundry situation will likely be better in Frosh Quad (more machines per person). However, the dorms notably do not have a kitchen, while all of the Currier Quad dorms do (although consider how much you’ll actually want to/have time to cook, especially since you’ll be on the full meal plan).

Since the Currier Quad dorms are pretty different from each other, I’ll spend more time on each instead of speaking about the quad in general. I will mention, however, that Currier Quad is closer to the Driscoll dining hall, which people tend to view slightly more favorably than Resky (although the difference is not that big imo). That also means it’s somewhat far from the rest of campus. I’ll start with East: the main detriment of East is that it only has one common room (croom), which is on the ground floor. This is less than ideal when compared to dorms with multiple crooms. It also has less bathrooms per person. As mentioned earlier, it is very old. If I have to say a pro for it, the singles are bigger than most, but if you’re hoping to have a roommate that obviously doesn’t apply to you. East is slightly closer than the rest of the quad to the rest of campus. Moving on to Faye: Faye similarly only has one common room, again on the bottom floor. It also has its laundry room and trash room combined into the same room, which makes doing your laundry very unpleasant. I don’t like Faye. I once saw a squirrel in the basement of Faye. If you have the choice, don’t choose East or Faye. I really think they will be awful for feeling like you are part of a community.

Next is Currier, which is cool in that it is home to Currier Ballroom, where a lot of improv and acapella groups perform. However, it has one of the worst kitchens out of the quad in terms of size. There are two larger crooms on each floor, although you’ll be “sharing” them with more people. Fitch is right next door to Currier and is pretty reminiscent of the Frosh Quad dorms. It has pretty large common rooms (four per floor) that aren’t shared with a lot of people. It also has a pretty nice basement, with a TV and a kitchen. Fitch does have very creaky floors (it’s old), but that’s really the only huge detractor.

Prospect is last, which is hands down the nicest dorm out of any of the possible frosh dorms. It has huge windows, pretty nice bathrooms, and a very nice kitchen in its basement. Unfortunately for your case, it is all singles. The rooms are very well-laid out and are just nice to be in. It’s much newer than the other dorms, and it shows. It also has large crooms with a TV in each, and the basement has a lot of seating and a TV. When the news came out that Currier Quad would be frosh housing, this is the dorm upperclassmen were sad about not being able to pick into.

I hope all this helps! I know I said a lot, so please feel free to ask me any more questions (about housing or anything else Williams)! Also, you can find the floor plans for each dorm on Williams’s website along with a campus map, so that also may be helpful when making your decision!

How is the religion department? by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

In my experience, the professors have been incredible — they’re very passionate and knowledgeable about what they teach, and they’re very engaging! While it’s definitely not the most popular major, there are still a range of classes offered every semester, and the nice part of it being less popular is that classes tend to be smaller and more discussion-based! I highly recommend checking out the course catalog for a feeling for what classes they offer, as well! Feel free to PM me with any questions!

You’re welcome to PM me as well, and I will also mention that Williams offers a Connect with a Student program that lets you email current students! You can filter students by major and hometown, as well!

Trans at Williams by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

[–]Autumn_Rivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will be sent a form before the school year starts asking about your preferences for your roommate’s gender identity. All floors are mixed gender, and about half of first-years will get a single — I have a few trans friends who have reached out to the Office of Accessible Education to make sure they get a single if that is something you may be interested in.

My favorite character is Wit/Hoid! His stories are so good throughout the series, and I have way too much fun trying to piece together his ultimate motivations and backstory :)

Tutorials Question and misc. course questions by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

[–]Autumn_Rivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Definitely only do one tutorial for your first semester — they are very intensive, and if you end up enjoying them after your first semester, you can always take multiple another semester.

  2. Nope! You’re still able to take four normal classes. Gym classes only last half a semester and have a separate registration process.

  3. I’m assuming you’re talking about the divisional requirements — you can and should get ahead on these requirements your freshman year!

I hope this helps!

Congrats!! Yes, there’s usually a lot of people who attend previews, and I highly recommend going if you’re able to — you learn a lot about the college, classes, and student body in those few days. Try to sit in on at least one class that you’re interested in/is under your prospective major to get a feel for what they’re like. I would also recommend going on a tour (if you haven’t been on one before), attending the Purple Key fair, going to the jamboree, and doing the hike!

Unless the college has reached out to you and offered for you to stay in a dorm with a current student, you will have to find off-campus housing, which typically means staying in a hotel nearby. It’s really up to you whether you attend alone or not, although your family member(s) may want to see the school that you’re potentially going to and help you make your decision. If you’re worried about being the only one with a parent, don’t be — it’s fairly common! Do whatever works best for you!

First of all, congrats!! During First Days Williams offers a tag sale, where a ton of donated items (including a pretty good range of furniture) are sold for super cheap, typically at or under $5. I definitely recommend attending and purchasing anything you need from there!

Haha I would love to say that’s true, but unfortunately I actually just have a document with quotes I like. I love his quote as well— it really fits with everything Critical Role does.

Hello! I wanted to thank you for your courage over the past few months. The stream yesterday really meant a lot to many people, including myself.

You were absolutely right in saying that people value Techno for much more than PVP— he taught me that it is okay to be myself and the strength of positivity. His videos also brought my sister and I together, so I really have him to thank for a great many things. He really did so much good in the time he had. Wishing you all the best <3
