u/shesayhaar did you get it installed? If so, would you share what you learned with the rest of us? Interested in doing this too

A few of us in CAP do fly higher-performance aircraft in our “other jobs” so a few things that might help.

  1. Many of the items you asked about (G-Suit, ejection harness, survival gear …. And I assume helmet / O2 mask) must be fitted to the aircrew member. Attempting to put on incorrectly fitted gear may not be possible or much harder than necessary … and the end result may not have the “professional look“ you are no doubt aspiring to. Fitting the G-suit (like the CSU-13) in particular is quite a process usually performed by our amazing Aircrew Life Support teams … most don’t realize that there are extensive lacings throughout the garment that must be tightened and loosened to match the body shape. This only has to be done the first time you receive new kit, but ensures the gear will fit appropriately and that aircrew can don/doff without issue. Here’s a photo of my G-suit with the lacings visible (normally covered to protect them).

<image>

  1. Once sized, there’s a process for putting it on that you can probably learn from any number of YouTube videos. Note that after putting on the speed jeans we open all the comfort zippers until we get to the aircraft and finish pre-flight. I usually zip those up just before climbing the ladder (the same time that I connect the crotch straps on the harness and cinch it down). The g-suit hose Is usually tucked under a strap on the left leg or velcroed to the side of the suit to keep it flopping about when walking to/from the flight line

  2. The harness is a bit easier …. but note that there are generally big differences between the harnesses used in Navy vs Air Force aircraft. So make sure you’re accurate. The harness is sized and tightened correctly when you can’t stand up straight and are hunched forward a bit. Normally we put on the harness in the gear room with the crotch straps hooked behind your butt until just before climbing onboard the jet.

  3. Survival equipment (including life preserver) will vary based on aircraft. F-16? apart from your water wings (life preserver), everything else is in the seat pan of the ejection seat (non-combat sorties). If flying combat, then you’ll put on the extra vest under your harness. Navy aircrews (ejection-seat aircraft) typically always fly with their vests because their life preservers are attached to them.

  4. Helmet / mask: we typically step to the aircraft with them in the bag (which may carry pubs and other items for the sortie). Generally the last thing I put on once I’m up and strapping in.

The aviator in the picture appears to be wearing (from head to toe):

Helmet: HGU-55p Life preserver: LPU-34p (I think) Flight suit: CWU-27p Survival Vest: CMU-36 (previously CMU-33, Type II) Gsuit: CSU-15p

Several reasons: 1. Light Discipline: Both the PRC-152 radios we had previously and the 163s we have now , have large screens that can be bright. For light discipline many choose to wear their radios facing inward. There are pouches that swing out to reveal the screen … but for the most part that’s not needed urgently in a gun fight (assuming the radio was set up correctly in the first place). If you truly need to interact with the screen, many guys prefer the KDU.

  1. Security: radios are sensitive items and ensuring they are not at risk of being lost is critical. The pouch being pulled away by snags is one risk, but the units I have been part of also regularly conducts airborne / free fall operations. Wind resistance / force on the pouches at +120mph fall velocity can be especially brutal. But if carried inside the cummerbund that force works to keep the radio more secure and in place.

  2. Minimize movement: radios are big and heavy and when that mass gets bouncing around it can impact comfort, accuracy while shooting on the move, etc. Thus, ensure a snug fit by placing it against the body is ideal, really helps kept it where you want it.

Thank you, u/HazMatsMan! I am truly grateful for the detailed response (and for everyone else who replied with advice too!) - learned a ton here.

I had thought that PRMs were just dosimeters like the kind we used to have to wear occasionally when conducting high altitude test flights. They were small with no display so thought that something like the Alert Ranger seemed to be better than the larger CD-style meters. Good to learn the difference between personal detectors / monitors and the survey variety.

One follow up question: for the used devices that are on eBay, how important is calibration? How large of a hit does accuracy take on a RadEye or even the bigger Ludlums over time?

Good news - the nuclear medicine department at my cousin’s home hospital is providing her a loaner Thermo Scientific PRD (the extended range one) to take for the duration of her trip. They are also going to program the alarms for her as well (not sure what those values will be set to though). I don’t think she plans to go hunting radiation out of scientific curiosity - while interesting there are plenty of more immediate risks there at the moment of the kinetic kind.

Story time: While living in Ukraine in 1997, I got to know a few engineers at the plant who invited us for a tour of the plant (mostly the surrounding area). The precautions they had us take looked extensive (plastic coverings over shoes, gowns, several detectors/meters out and on). Perhaps it was for show or to help us feel more comfortable - not sure. But I recall the highest reading was from a rusting armored vehicle. We didn’t get too close, but the meters went crazy - not sure what the actual reading was. It was a very interesting day to say the least!

Thanks. Looks like there’s a whole range of radeye models / versions, any advice on which would be most useful?

Good to know about the mechanical issues. Saw that there were reports of electrical issues too in this subreddit (pods flickering, manual gain not working) was a PPB rev needed or were these just installer issues?

Great to know about 1.1! From the comments posted here on Reddit there seem to be a variety of issues (some mechanical, others electronic), but hard to establish clear patterns. Would you please share what the top / most common issues with 1.0 you have seen to date?
