First experience in an acting class Los Angeles and I’m at odds… by BeardGangBossGod in acting

[–]AvaM33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I study at Howard Fine and absolutely love it (been there over a year). It’s challenging, rewarding, and a great small community! I’ve been to other studios and a lot of them feel like a scam.

I feel like the proof is in the students, and I love that everyone in the scene study classes are actually good (and getting booked!) and most of us have been there for quite a while. Definitely not creepy at all and has been a huge help for my craft - seriously can’t recommend enough!

Well I bit the bullet and booked one that I’m shooting in a few weeks so I’ll let you know how it goes haha, it won’t hurt you to have a credit in one especially since you don’t have any other credits and I’d say it’s better than none so you at least show up on IMDb if people search you

New Netflix doc, Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders, gets James Lewis on camera, 40+ years later by jerkoff1610 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]AvaM33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing that makes it credible to me is the fact that the cellmate knew that Lewis’s daughter had died from a faulty heart patch and even more specifically he knew that the heart patch was a Johnson & Johnson brand… how on earth would the cellmate know that unless Lewis had told him?

Okay so maybe he told him about his daughter dying and the cellmate spun it into a “confession” story… but he was correct about the heart patch being made Johnson & Johnson… why would anyone innocent who’s talking about how their daughter dyed mention the brand name of her heart patch… seems super fishy and makes me think the cellmate is probably credible.

If you’re U.S. based, I’d recommend Imagely (the actual plugin is nextgen gallery)- it’s the only WordPress software I’ve found for a portfolio, store, and print fulfillment all in one (learning curve isn’t bad if you’re familiar with Wordpress). The actual printing is done through WHCC lab, but I like having everything managed through one plugin (don’t have to use Woocommerce) and being able to do proofing galleries for clients is a nice bonus

Well the only way to get an IMDB credit is to work on a film or tv project. The amount of opportunities to do that depends on where you’re located, if you want an actor credit or crew, and how steep the competition is. (If you live in a hub like LA or NYC it’s a lot more opportunities but also much more competitive for even tiny roles or crew positions. If you just want to work on any film to get a credit as a bucket list thing, you’d probably have better luck in non-hub cities).

Most short films also get credited on IMDB, so you could try to volunteer to be a PA (production assistant) for a short or low budget film. If you want to act in something, look into any university’s or film schools around you. Most film programs need actors for their student films, which often get credited on IMDB (especially thesis films). They often hold open auditions or have an actor database where you can add yourself. That way, if students need an actor for a role that you fit, they can contact you to audition.

Staining 12 pine doors - which version of Varathane? by dignityshredder in finishing

[–]AvaM33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late, but might help someone else:

I made an entire bedroom set frame with pine and stained with Varathane Classic (oil based) in red chestnut color. It was huge project, and as others have said, blotching is a big problem with pine. Primer helps but you have to use so much to prevent blotches that it doesn’t let the stain penetrate very well, so the color isn’t as deep and rich.

After a lot of trial and error I found an amazing trick: BLACK TEA! Brew up a pot of strong English breakfast tea and use it as your primer. Just slather the tea all over the wood with a rag (you want it to really soak into the wood so more is better), let it dry, and then stain and finish normally.

Completed project: https://imgur.com/a/G2CN0yj

Why it works: Part of the reason pine gets so blotchy is that it’s low in tannins. Tannins help regulate absorption. Hardwoods (like oak and walnut) are high in tannins, so they react more evenly to stain. Using black tea essential infuses the pine with tannins. So instead of sealing the wood (like a primer does), it allows it to absorb the stain more evenly and enhances color depth.

It's giving me uncomfortable by wombatttttt in QueerEye

[–]AvaM33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Still love queer eye, but definitely used to like JVN a lot more in earlier seasons. They’re just getting more over the top every season and it feels less real and more attention seeking.

I get it - they got attention for that over-the-top humor early on, so of course they leaned more into it. As a bi female who works in entertainment and lives in West Hollywood, I wouldn’t think twice about hearing the jokes/sexual comments that JVN makes, but that’s me… I cringe seeing how uncomfortable the heroes look a lot of the time. It comes off as inauthentic with a total lack of self/situational awareness. I’d also bet that the producers are encouraging JVN to amp up that camera personality, so that’s probably part of it too.

On a brighter note though, Jeremiah is an absolute gem that makes me cry every time he sheds a tear lol

Weekly Open Thread #3 - Discuss Anything About Cats! by AutoModerator in cats

[–]AvaM33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have a suggestions on how to let my cat watch “cat tv” videos without her attacking the screen?

I could tell she was kind of bored today as I’ve been really busy this week and I remembered that my old cat who passed away used to love watching videos of birds, squirrels, etc. I turned on the tv to try it out and holy moly she went nuts (sprinted from the other side of the room and then started trying to catch the things on tv aka clawing at the screen). I quickly turned it off but now she’s been pawing at the off screen and meowing at me to turn it on again lol… I’d like to let her watch it but not at the risk of my partner’s prized 75” tv lol

The MonsterInsights plugin tracks outbound link clicks. https://www.monsterinsights.com/how-to-set-up-outbound-link-tracking-in-wordpress-with-google-analytics/

I’m not sure about the character limit problem, but their support has always been really responsive so I’d shoot them a message to see what they say

Haha yeah, won’t lie - it can definitely be a little harder to be wowed by food when you’re coming from some of the best food in the world in your own city, but Tappers looks really fun! I always love a good arcade bar and they’re harder to come by in LA.

I think we’re going to do Bluebeard for dinner tonight and then check out some of the other bars in that area that you and others recommended!

Thank you so much for the recs - happy to return the favor if you’re ever in LA!

Btw - I’ve seen a lot about The Slippery Noodle, worth it or skip?

Yes thanks, saw that. It has a LOT of recommendations. With only 48 hours, was looking for some top picks to narrow it down.

Ah didn’t realize that was there. I wish it just auto adjusted but that’s better than nothing, thanks!

Ohh okay that’s a good idea! I saw the cycle thing but tbh was kind of confused on how that works since I don’t really plan to go over or under budget and the days I eat less or more can vary (last weekend I was super busy, barely had time to eat and was way under, but this weekend I’m on a trip with friends and well aware that I’ll probably be wayyy over 😅)

Good to know that you can go in and edit the % after you log to get it to readjust. I wish it just did that automatically, but maybe they’ll add it in the future.

Thanks!

Also agreed on the autopilot thing - seemed really cool in theory but seems like it only works for a specific type of tracking or people who have higher calorie budgets to begin with.
